I don't dislike Sarah Palin because she's a woman. I dislike her because she's ignorant and egotistical.

That is the same reason why most people dislike you.

Di Atribe: sprawl15: pudding7: I followed the 2008 election religiously, and I never really saw the sexist treatment of Palin or Hillary from any of the major news organizations.

The most 'sexist' treatment of either of them was the constant "Palin is hot LOL!" nonsense that kept getting bandied about.

Honest question: Do you think Palin would've gotten half as far as she did if she were unattractive?

I'll answer for them: HELL NO.

DarwiOdrade: Tying this in with the "texting with Hillary" thread:

Sarah Palin: Sure is tough being a woman in politics these days, huh Hillary?

Hillary Clinton: How would you know?

ohsnap.jpg .. of course, Hillary would have done better if she managed to get rid of Billy Boy The Subconsciously Undermining

Palin sure did whine about a myriad of perceived slights for a "hockey mom". Hell, she's still mad at Katie Couric for asking her a simple question she just couldn't answer.

"I read the Anchorage Times and Field & Stream".

How farking hard is that?

I said it at the time, and looking back I still think I was right: the Republicans nominating Sarah Palin is one of the most sexist things I've ever seen in politics. It was blatantly obvious that they felt women voters would flock to her after Hilary didn't get the nomination. As if women voters based their opinions on gender above everything else. What an insult.

2012-04-09 03:46:24 PM
Well, Mrs. Clinton is more than a bit on the evil side and Mrs. Palin is painfully stupid, so maybe it's a lack of good role models more than "hurr durr the media"? Even in cases where female politicians were mostly good people that got pounded by the media, it's generally been, y'know, about something they did, not because they were female. Secretary Rice signed off on an incredibly unpopular war, Congressman Pelosi's administration of the party was almost intentionally weak and her dealings in-district were on occasion rather corrupt, etc. Its not like male politicians don't get pounded by the media when they screw up, and plenty of men are still going into politics.

Basically, this:

EvilEgg: All politicians get beat up, over everything. if you can't take it, you shouldn't go into politics.

Honest answer: I don't think anyone unattractive will do very well in politics, male or female. I think Palin would do just as well if she wasn't unattractive, even if this meant she wasn't a beauty queen.

Disclaimer: In the US.

my own thoughts....ronald reagan, arnold schwarzenegger, shirley temple black, jerry springer, fred thompson, jesse ventura, al franken, sonny bono, etc kinda incline me to think that the line between the two is a lot narrower than anybody would want to admit.

It's been less and less true as photographic and video technology has improved. Now that everything has to be in HD it will just get worse.

My assessment is this: most women who succeed in politics do so to further chip away at the glass ceiling. Some may be idealistic, but I think most of them just want to roll in the old boys club. It probably takes twice as much effort for them to succeed with the same lousy results as the rest of our politicians. Most women who actually want to make a difference find better ways to do it than government.

//this is in no way meant to be condemning of women in politics, because men in politics have been FAR worse

Di Atribe: Honest question: Do you think Palin would've gotten half as far as she did if she were unattractive?

I honestly never could figure out why so many people thought she was attractive; maybe I'm just not into the MILF-type women. I think, however, even if I did find her attractive there is no way that I could get over the fact that I disagree with her on almost all issues nor the fact that I could not take her seriously because of her stupid "folksy-ness".

2012-04-09 03:59:46 PM
Which is sad, since women make up a larger percentage of the populace these days.

But really, it shouldn't matter what sex a politician is, as long as they listen to their constituents, and tell them when he or she can act on a matter they bring to their Rep or Senator, or tell them to nicely to fark off and what they are asking for is unconstitutional and un-American.

//"There ought'a be a law" has to be one of the most dangerous phrases around.

Being mayor of Wasilla and having served half a term as Alaskan governor is about on par with being a Senator from Illinois. So maybe the critique was unfair - so just say things like Editor of Harvard Law Review, knows that he can't see Canada from his Chicago house, knows that Africa is a continent and not a country, knows which newspapers he reads, knows more presidents than just the ones that appear on greenbacks, etc, etc.

Stop defending a moron. Whether she was treated unfairly or not by the press is irrelevant. She proved herself to be a moron then, and continues to prove it to this very day.

Yeah, I don't recall anybody saying that about Palin either. And it wouldn't make sense in any case; what credentials does Todd have?

That said, I wouldn't agree that Palin had "lots of political credentials". Small-town mayor and not even completing one term of governor of one of the least populous states in the union isn't exactly lots of cred.
