jabelar: Here's the thing -- anyone who thinks being gay is a choice is by definition not straight.... I really wish someone would call out any Conservative talking about "lifestyle choice" -- they are simply gay.

Dan Savage covered this pretty well in his letter to Herman Cain:

Dear Herman,
If being gay is a choice, show us the proof. Choose it. Choose to be gay yourself. Show America how that's done, Herman, show us how a man can choose to be gay. Suck my dick, Herman. Name the time and the place and I'll bring my dick and a camera crew and you can suck me off and win the argument.
Very sincerely yours,
Dan Savage

Aidan: Wyrdbrthr: FuturePastNow: I wish I wanted cock. I'd get so much more sex than I do now.

That's always been one of the more fun gay stereotypes people have thrown at me. I'm not saying it's wrong, but it is fun for people to tell me how much sex I should be having and then sort of staring at me, like I'm behind on my ass-sex quota for the month or something.

Women get that too: "Oh my god, stop biatching, you can have sex any time you want."

Nooo... You're thinking of women you notice. You know; all the good looking ones.

Eh, if Fark's proven anything it's that there are guys out there who will lay anything with a pulse. And sometimes that's optional.

I have standards though, which is why I never get any sex.

You don't have any gay bars with Southern boys in Raleigh? I find that a little hard to believe.

There's a tiny bit of a difference between 'southern,' and 'redneck.' :)

Watch the latter. That's how I got my bottom teeth driven through my mouth between my bottom lip and chin. Flattery is not always accepted, especially in a mixed crowd.

I was kidding about me cruising redneck establishments. Believe me, I know to keep my sexuality very subdued around the straights, especially rednecks.

We used to have a southern/biker/leather gay bar here in town. Closed many years ago. That was my usual haunt.

The bashing incident was on Halloween, downtown.

We have a wannabe alternative (non-twink) bar here in Raleigh. It's okay, but about what you'd expect for a small-ish city in the South.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience. :/

Straight guys are usually only dangerous in packs, you need to seperate one from the herd before going in for the kill.

That is one of my biggest reasons for why I love gay men: More pussy for me. Every gay man out there means less competition for me.

This is a good thing.

The study used subliminal grade words on a screen and then allowed subjects to browse images of same-sex and opposite-sex photos...pron or pics of all male or all female couples or groups?

Then the first three words after being primed with anti-gay words primed with "ki_ _" that's some great baiting there Lou. Kilt, Kick, Kiln oooh I'm Scottish, violent and anti-semitic. 4 letters, start with Ki and then extrapolate that in milliseconds anyone who comes up with anything that could be construed with violence means they condone violence.

Cosmo and other mags sell ideal images to women on a sexual level...so all women are repressed lesbians.

Men's Health sells an ideal to men and all men are repressed homo's.

Critical thinking, lost. The modern policy agenda has created the science of trolling.

What's our agenda? We want the data to show that strict parenting, religious beliefs about homosexuality indicates that those people are actually closeted gays. Just so we can mock them and prove that we have no agenda it's them. Publish in "Science Daily".

Armand Tanzarian: I worked with a guy who was vehemently anti-gay, you could just see the utter disgust on his face when discussing the subject. I asked him one time why he hated gays so much and he replied, "It's giving in to your body's deepest, darkest desires." Oh, okay buddy, whatever you say.

Yeah, I've actually heard that from a lot of religious homophobes in the media. They denounce the "temptation" of homosexuality and discuss society's need to "resist those urges."

Very interesting. So that means that religion-bashing FARK atheists are probably quiet church-goers and have secret prayer closets where they repent of their public denouncements of religion.

No, Christians have a history of trying to control the lives of others in this country and others through force coersion and laws for centuries. If I stop to ask myself "Why do I bash christians" I can come up with a dozen good reasons in a minute or two. Homos on the other hand basically want to be treated fairly and left alone to live their lives, if you are afraid of that maybe there is something deeper going on.

/also christians hardly qualify as an "out-group"

Lumpmoose: jabelar: Here's the thing -- anyone who thinks being gay is a choice is by definition not straight. I don't mean this flippantly, but logically -- if you think there is any chance that you might choose to be in a gay relationship you are not straight, because the idea is hugely adverse to straight people.

And vice versa for gay people: I have a gay cousin, and once we asked him why he didn't like women. He said that "they reminded him of spiders, and the idea that they have eggs inside them grosses him out." In other words, his aversion to women is similar to an aversion to spiders -- a low-level physical aversion.

And even if you were inclined to be gay, actually being openly gay has so many downsides in our society that most actual gay people stay closeted for a significant portion of their life. There is simply no way that someone would wake up and consciously choose to be discriminated against and even put their life in danger to do something that is gross to them.

Anyway, if you have to "choose" to not be gay, then you are not straight. If you're thinking "boy I'd like to be gay, but I won't act on it because the Bible says it's wrong" you are gay. I really wish someone would call out any Conservative talking about "lifestyle choice" -- they are simply gay.

That's a little black-and-white. Kinsey's scale rates orientation from 0 (completely straight) to 6 (completely gay). A rabidly anti-gay conservative may "choose" to be straight if they're a 1 or a 2. Resist cock your whole life because your wife meets 80% of your sexual needs, mix in a dash of repression and bam, you're straight.

An honest and self-respecting 1 or 2 on the scale may occasionally suck cock for kicks but still "round up" to straight. It's identity vs. orientation and is a nuance most social conservatives can't grasp while they work to keep our society shiatty.

The problem is that most people talk, including the Kinsey study, about orientation in terms of what you like (attraction) versus what you're adverse to. Adversion is a better way to discuss it because it is more clear: as soon as you are even a little bit adverse to something, you're not going to choose it, especially if it comes along with a bunch of other bad things. There is no gray area there -- if you don't like the way a guy smells, can't stand a hairy body, etc. -- there is no 1 or 2. It either nauseates you or it doesn't. The "scale" thing really indicates that if you aren't adverse to something, what is the likelihood you'd act on it.

adverse to same-sex = straight
adverse to opposite-sex = gay
not adverse to anything = bi, ambi, tri, whatever (you may still have a preference, but the point is you're fundamentally not adverse to it)
adverse to everyone = asexual (this is an actual orientation too)

"The quotation "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet, Act III, scene II. The phrase has come to mean that one can "insist so passionately about something not being true that people suspect the opposite of what one is saying."

As long as you keep it to yourself, then you're just a regular person with their own opinion. It's when you shout it from the rooftops, make poorly spelled signs about it and march around, and try to pass legislation that you head into homophobe territory and it becomes an issue.

ShawnDoc: Fark_Guy_Rob: In fact, *computer-generated gibberish* has been successfully published in a large number of prestigious scientific journals.

http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/scigen/ is an example of one.
Keep in mind - this is really complete and utter nonsense (you can leave the references blank and just hit 'generate' to see what kind of content it generates); but it has had it's generated papers published in a whole slew of journals:

(from the site)
Philip Davis got a paper accepted to the Open Information Science Journal.
Peter Trifonov got a random paper accepted to the GESTS journal.
Mikhail Gelfand and the Troitsky Variant newspaper published Rooter in Russian in a nationally accredited Russian scientific journal.
"Herbert Schlangemann" got a SCIgen paper accepted to the IEEE CSSE 2008 conference.
Students at Sharif University in Iran got a paper accepted by the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computation.
Mathias Ulsar got a paper accepted to the IPSI-BG conference.
Professor Genco Gülan published a paper in the 3rd International Symposium of Interactive Media Design.

Again....I don't want to belittle the very real and serious work that lots and lots of very smart people are doing all over the world; the takeaway from this shouldn't be 'OMG papers are stupid', I'm just trying to explain why my default stance when hearing something was studied or researched isn't to immediately trust it as true. I don't immediately think it's false either; I just withhold judgement.

I've met a lot of gay men who really aren't. I've never met a completely straight straight person. I've never met a homophobe who wasn't thinking about sucking a cock and couldn't/wouldn't admit it -- unless he thought no one would ever find out.

Here I am, getting stuck doing the dishes while I can only imagine gay dudes get to bang their work-out buddies while playing Xbox 360; then later brag to their friends about how they both get to bang each other while playing Xbox 360.

// That probably doesn't really capture what it's like to be gay - but that's my best guess.

Of course homophobes are more likely to be closeted homosexuals.

Of those who think there is nothing wrong with being attracted to the same sex (non-homophobes), some will be attracted to their own sex and some won't. Of those who are attracted to the same sex, they won't be "closeted" -- at least not in the internal sense of being in self-denial (but they might be "closeted" in the external sense, that they keep quiet for fear of their well-being in particular societies).

Of those who think there is something wrong with being attracted to the same sex (homophobes), some will be attracted to their own sex and some won't. Of those who are attracted to the same sex, they will either be closeted (in self-denial) or self-loathing (acknowledge that they are attracted to the same sex, but hate that about themselves).

Of course that doesn't mean that most homophobes are closeted homosexuals... as people tend to act like that is the claim.

Yeah I'm still learning that (slow farkin' learner). Laziness vs. "he just glanced at my chest? Hey, that's neat." :P
