(Gothamist)   Touchscreen pay phones are coming to NYC, which still doesn't solve the problem of having to actually touch them   (gothamist.com) divider line 18

Especially since everyone knows those are only used for dirty talk lines.

I have a pay phone in my kitchen.

Brother works for the phone company. When they started taking public pay phones out of service, he swiped a couple and gave them away. Phone is rigged to work without money, and any coins put in the slot just drop to the money return. Works great.

He has a full phone booth with working phone in his basement.

I don't see what the big deal is, they had these up on the big space station way back in 2001.

Considering they are built to be tough enough to be washed down with an industrial hose, i think this could actually work.

Also being a guy in advertising, this could totally be a place for Clorox / Purell to put up cleanliness stations near these things. Even if they do clean the things regularly it's winning points with OCDs around the city.

I think this is a step in the right direction though, i like the idea of public wifi spots like this, places where you can Skype if you want to from there, or just access information around the little hub. This is the kind of shiat i always saw in video games and movies growing up. It's not quite the intractable holograms of Mass Effect but public information terminals taking the same space as pay phones is a good idea.

I hope the pilot goes well, i'd like for this to be done in my home city (ATL MOTHERFARKERS).

Does it solve the problem of no one using a pay phone?

Just hire some Telephone Sanitizers.

Problem solved. It's almost but not entirely unlike multiplying numbers.

I'm guessing that between spray paint and etching these will be next to useless shortly.

And, in other news, somebody just finished going through the slush pile from April 1.
