Male "balloon flies" pull the same trick. For millions of years they gave gifts wrapped in silk. Once females evolved sexual attraction to silk wrapping some males stopped putting food inside.

We give the crappy gifts cause they keep running away with our good stuff without giving it up. Why give them something good if they are just gonna steal it?

Long-term evolutionary fail. B.F. Skinner would have suggested putting food in only some of the wrappings.

Then you get females performing elaborate rituals trying to influence the box's contents through their actions.

I especially enjoyed the part about the male sexual organ staying in longer and giving her a protein-enriched gift.

The trick is remembering what kind of gift to give your companion.

Kira likes "Underworld Goods"
Scourge likes "Imperial Memorabilia"
Rusk likes "Military Gear"
Doc likes "Luxuries"

Another evolutionary force is sexual selection-since females will only willingly mate with males who are willing to do a little dance for them, eventually, all males become dancers. An example would be peacocks - since females will only mate with males who have ridiculous displays, ridiculous displays are selected for.

Not all females in all species get to have their way. A number of mating rituals in the animal kingdom amounts to nothing more than brutal, misogynistic rape.

And a number of males get eaten during mating. What's your point? Evolution doesn't care if behavior is moral, only that the behavior is sustainable and gets passed on via genetics.

Don't make me tell you about fly gang-rape

Yup. Rape happens, but that can also be a form of sexual selection. For example, Duck females have spiral vaginas to help fend off rape.

That consensual monogamous courtship is pretty rare. Most animals engage in abundant levels of rape, coercion, brutality, infidelity, homosexuality, situational sexual behavior, group sex, masturbation and explicit life-threatening and occasionally fatal sexual perversions - everything from cannibalism and necrophilia to castration and coprophagia and felching and everything in between - with clear conscience. Humans are the only ones who have socio-sexual morals. The law of the natural world with regards to sex is one of promiscuity and opportunism. Outside of that there are no laws.

don't make me tell you about cichlid blowjobs, gay weevil rape, bedbug knife penis, snail penis fencing, mating plugs, cephalopod transexuals, angler fish body atrophication, brood parasites, snake mating balls and spider vagina corpses

That's where the "strictly speaking" comes into play. In the strictest terms, mating success produces offspring. Mating in and of itself may or may not.

I think you're getting hung up on anthropomorphication. We have morals because we're social. People who are amoral, at least overtly, have a lower fitness. Therefore rape=bad. Adaptively speaking.

Animals that operate on those laws that any number of mechanisms are okay to engage in so long as they have kids, rape appears if it raises fitness, dissapears if it doesn't.

Assigning human morality to insect behaviors is as stupid as the reverse.

That's the inherent problem with rape, no? Unless the female dies, the male's aggressive behavior gets passed on.

That's also the downside - if the female dies, no one's genes get passed on and everybody loses.

That frequently happens. It's called traumatic insemination.

That's what I was thinking, and how do we know that isn't the case too?

On what basis do we assume (or actually prove) that they used to always put food in them.

I have read a good article on a possible sequence that led balloon flies to offer empty balloons but I can't find it now. Random selection on the topic (one of the first Google hits):

Sadowski, Jennifer A. et al. 1999. The Evolution of Empty Nuptial Gifts in a Dance Fly, Empis snoddyi (Diptera: Empididae): Bigger Isn't Always Better. Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology 45:161-166. http://www.jstor.org/stable/4601590

Females of the species studied in this paper prefer smaller balloons. Mating success is positively correlated with male body size and negatively correlated with balloon size. One could argue females of this species have figured out they are being tricked.

And there are the cases where so much male competition over a female damages the female and lowers offspring potential. It's like the Nash equilibrium, but with rape.

Now I've been around Fark for awhile, and I've seen some good band names here and there. But I am pretty sure that is the best band name I've seen.
