ZeroCorpse: So I'm the only one that thinks Hathaway looks a little derpy?

I mean, I'm capable of seeing past her breasts, so maybe that's the problem... But I always thought her face had a little derp-de-derp going on. She's not ugly, but she's not what I'd consider cute, either.

What I'm saying is that her face was late to film her scenes in The Dark Knight Rises, because it's always a little tardy.

Okay. Okay. I'll just leave you guys alone to stare at her tits. Have fun.

I'm sorry. That was mean. She doesn't look like she has Down Syndrome and I didn't mean to insult her or the people who have Down Syndrome by using those hurtful words.

Forgive me. Now go look at her boobs.

MurphyMurphy: hunger games would have been good (as opposed to ok) if it had been R. they blunted too much of the material, not just the killings

What would have been different? I didn't read the book. Because PG-13 movies can be pretty damned violent. In Taken, Liam Neeson shoots a shiatload of people, there's prostitutes high on drugs, he shoots a guy's wife in front of him to get him to talk (they stole that from '24'), he tortures a guy with electrocution and after the guy talks, leaves with the electricity turned on.

Now if there were sex in the book or more than one eff word that you think should have been in the film, then you're out of luck.

So far, yes.

There's a little bit of quirkiness to her face that keeps it from being "perfect" beauty, but that's why I like it. I'm ready for her to show me her "derpy" O face any damn day of the week.

Also, tits.

I haven't even read the books.

Just to me, watching the movies.... well first, it's 24 kids fighting to the death. I only saw a couple die, the rest was a blurry-fast-camera-flying-around-oh-its-over-already stuff.

On top of that, I get the feeling that the entire premise was rushed and shallow. You never really see any real despair in the colonies to give the viewer attachment to the strife. Even the couple rushed scenes eluding to possible revolt were very toned down.

This isn't to mention that they just present the plot as "well we had a war and now we do this" with all the tact, depth and intelligence of an 8th grader.

Overall I liked the movie, but it just seems that the themes they were trying to deal with do not come across convincingly at all when handled with kids gloves.

All of that said, I agree they have really pushed the envelope in other movies. I have no doubt this batman installment will be awesome... I just wonder what kind of movies we would really be getting if they didn't need to play the pg13 game just for revenue and let the artist go wild. And even better, as I suggested, what if we could have our cake and eat it too?

It's not just about sex and f-bombs, it's about realism and depth.

So you man if the consequences of the death of the children's deaths were emphasized it would require an R rating?

2012-04-09 12:47:05 PM

Millennium: Everybody likes Batman, but his core audience is still young. It probably always will be. No movie maker would be foolish enough to exclude that audience at the box office.

It's bigger than that. No studio is going to spend $250 million+ on a summer tentpole movie that's rated anything other than PG-13.

/However, Nolan proved in the last film that he -like directors who had to work under the Hays Office- knows how to skirt the rules and deliver a PG-13 film that's still very adult.

/Wanna see a magic trick?

Haven't actually seen the Hunger Games movie yet but just finished the book a few days ago and the person claiming it needed to be R rated to cover the material is wrong. 2 times Katniss is supposed to be nude while getting prepped but those scenes could be carefully shot and/or stopped short of nudity for films sake. The nudity is more a demostration of the cultures different values and mores than a plot necessity. No smoking, no sex, and only 3 really brutal violence scenes. The big guy killing the girl at the feast, Rue's death and the last guys death at the cornucopia

It would in fact be rather retarded to turn a young adult novel into an R rated film.

The issue being of course that these movies don't actually cost $250mill to make. The studios say that they cost that much because they don't want to pay off the percentage of the profits that some of the talent signed up for and they can claim that the movie made no profit.

There's no reason why an R rated action movie can't make a profit. They have in the past. The way the studios currently cook the books just say they don't.

It's not about making a profit vs. not making a profit. It's about making a good sized profit vs making a humongogigantonormous profit. PG-13 is currently the way to the latter.

The same argument can be made for movies based on Superhero comics. Sure, there exist comic books that are really adult fare, but the capes are pretty exclusively targeted at younger teenagers, especially the biggest properties (X-men, Superman, Batman, etc.). And for the same reason, optimum balance of having disposable income (albeit second-hand from parents) and not yet having developed adult social expenses.

That's not adjusted for inflation and doesn't take into account that the budgets of today's movies are perversely inflated well beyond the level of inflation. Terminator 2 was a huge hit. Made less, cost less by today's standards but also made a shiatload more by today's standards because the budget wasn't obscenely inflated.

R rated movies used to make money and they still would if they would spend a reasonable amount and stop cooking the books to appear to come out as a loss.

because people equate an R-rating with being edgy. I have a feeling that anyone that up-in-arms over what a movie is rated is probably working through some issues with their parents where they weren't allowed to see anything rated above PG. They like the taboo aspect.

I'll give that crazy Mormon bigot his due.... he's held out against getting a film of Ender's Game made for YEARS because he insisted on not letting someone butcher the story. He insisted it stay violent, that it was a kid doing the violence and that they NOT give the kid a love interest. Considering how many legit movie deals he's turned down over the years, based on a refusal to violate those requirements, I'd be surprised if they hacked the story up too badly.

It's still going to be a 2-hour movie though, so some shiat is going to have to be left out.

Only fairly specific types of movies (essentially, blockbusters) end up on the infinite merch gravy train. Everyone else has to go for actual ticket sales, which tend to be favored by the PG-13 rating. And you have to get a decent audience among the kids to sell your toys, so blockbusters tend to avoid R when they can as well.

T-2 is perhaps something of an exception to the rule, given that it's an '80s/early '90s era action movie and people hadn't quite worked out the monetary optima yet. I would venture that Alien and Predator were probably similar. Though there were real differences as well-- theaters didn't actually start enforcing the R ratings until the late '90s so kids would still see your flick in the T2/Predator days. Now an R rating means they won't, unless their parents actually take them.

//Kind of weird to me that R means no children under 17 admitted now, given that that's explicitly what the NC-17 rating means.
