He should find one of those new IV trucks we've been hearing about.

Let's say you drink ten beers in an hour, then order the IV and have them clear your system for 30 minutes, are you suddenly sober? Like, can you drive a car now? Is it a quick fix?

No. As you process the alcohol, you dehydrate; that's what an IV fixes. If you do an IV while you're still drunk... you're just going to be really well-hydrated and drunk.

I've been pushing the IV solution for about a decade, since I got one once in combat lifesaver class while nursing an epic hangover. Made me feel like a million bucks in about a minute... I hate needles, but I'd take one in that case. What an amazing idea (IVs in the first place, and mobile IV units as well).

Now a mobile dialysis machine.. that might solve that problem and sober you up quickly.

I know nurses and firefighters who use this remedy almost every weekend. they swear by the IV.

/ a friend is having a bachelor party soon, and some of the guests will be firefighters. they plan on bringing some IVs.
// I am extremely curious, because I suffer hangovers worse than the normal person.

I'm sure the needles are sterile, but damn, I'd feel weird about it nonetheless.

FTA:

The entertainment community is mourning the loss of professional singer Michaelina Bellamy, who died Saturday. Bellamy performed with Engelbert Humperdinck and starred as center vocalist in "Les Folies Bergere" at the Tropicana. She was 59. Her world was turned upside down in 2007 when she was attacked by the Rev. George Chaanine at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, where she worked.

I think this sounds like a much more interesting story...

If they're reusing needles, yes. If not, no. And they probably are not. Can you imagine the shiatstorm that would befall that company if news go out they were reusing needles?

Oh wow. The first time something goes wrong, and they get the next 20 years of their paychecks sued out of them, I'm going to laugh.

IVs are not an easy thing to start on some people, especially chronic alcoholics.

$5 bottle of excedrin and a gallon of spring water seems like a much more reasonable alternative.

All my firefighter friends do this before they go to bed.

2012-04-09 12:58:28 PM
I usually just pound a bunch of water or gatorade before I got to bed that helps with the hangover a lot.

What about a 4 day bender?

/Too soon?

Every city has IV buses already. The routes are less extensive, they are more expensive, the trip is only one way, and they are called something else...ambulances, I think....but they exist almost everywhere.

2012-04-09 01:01:09 PM
Alchohol dehydrates you.....I'd say after the 5th attempt to start an IV the hungover drunk would say stop.

2012-04-09 01:01:28 PM
I used to have a buddy who was an EMT that would do this almost every day.

Here's an idea, drink water with your booze, drink a big glass of water before bed and a big glass of water after waking up, and stop being a giant pussy about it. I've never had a hangover that was worth getting an IV over. Seriously these days people act like the world is ending because they are experiencing mild discomfort. I'm only 28 so don't think I'm trying to get people off of my lawn but there seems to be a lot more lame wimps around these days. I've seen people take time off work for sinus headache, congestion, sunburn, and hangovers what is next heartburn?

Why would anyone willingly have an IV put in their arm? I can barely stand it when I need it for a real medical reason.

A good buddy is a medic in the army. We've used this method many times.

The guy doing it is a board certified anesthesiologist so if something goes wrong and the lawsuit gets past the lengthy waiver, he might not even be out a year's salary.

Oh, damn. I didn't see that in TFA. He shouldn't have any problem then.

They sell their souls in Medical School for unholy IV skills.

ph0rk: What magic juice do they administer intravenously to fix a hangover?

I had to look it up, because I knew it had Thiamine, but it also has an IV Multivitamin (Which gives it the yellow color), Magnesium Sulfate, and folic acid

I'm 43, I don't "rage it" really hard very often these days, but every few months I get good and wasted.

Hangovers get worse as you age (talkin to you Mr 28-year-old up thar)...but simple tricks all but eliminate most hassle.

Drink some water while drinking. It's so simple. Just throw a water bottle into the mix every few drinks to help things out. Then (key) make sure to finish the night with a large glass of water before bed. Keep another glass next to the bed - when you wake up to take a piss in the wee hours you'll be very thirsty - slam it.

Almost zero hangover.

If you're know you're going to get totally shiatfaced, plan ahead:

Go to the local drugstore and get 2 bottles of Pedialyte, and put them in the fridge to chill. Eat before you start your bender. Drink as much of the first bottle as you can before bed. If you get up in the middle of the night to whiz, take the opportunity to chug down the rest of the bottle. Odds are you'll feel pretty decent in the morning, but if your night out was legendary, drink the second bottle in the morning.

/you're welcome

Replace one or two of those waters with a sports drink and it is all good. If you're pissing out a lot of beer (or in Vegas dying of heat) you'll want the extra stuff in the sports drink. I normally do a 2:1 ratio of water to sports drinks.

The IV thing seems like a no thank you. Sure its effective, but just force yourself to chug a lot of water and then go pass back out in bed for 90 minutes. It's not as fast, but no chance of getting a disease off a dirty needle or equipment that wasn't cleaned properly.

I got really bad hangovers when I was in my 20s. One morning I did 9 (nine) bags of LR and still felt like shiat. Now my hangover cure is simple, stick to beer have a glass of water or a soda now and then. Before bed I try and drink as much water as I can- about 2 (two) liters- and eat 2 (two) Flintstones chewables. Its dehydration and lack of B vitimins that will give you a hangover.

Except right now there is a shortage of Banana bags. My GF works in a hospital and we've heard of this IV for a hangover fix for a long time I've just never gotten a chance to try it.

ph0rk: What magic juice do they administer intravenously to fix a hangover?

The typical composition of a banana bag is 1 liter of normal saline (sodium chloride 0.9%) with:
Thiamine 100 mg
Folic acid 1 mg
MVI 1 amp (Multivitamin for infusion, 1 ampule)
3 grams of magnesium sulfate
The solution is typically infused over four to eight hours or as per physician's orders.

Banana bags are used in the Intensive Care Unit to correct acute magnesium deficiencies. They may be beneficial for patients with terminal illness because magnesium can mitigate nerve pain and relieve muscle pain and cramps.

2) Steamroom for 30 mins then a cold shower for 10 mins 1 liter of cold water and 2 asprin
