Back in the 80s, Sony was at the top of its game up till they released the PS2 in 2000. The dominated the electronics market until Apple came along and crushed their walkman with the iPod and later iPhone. They hurt themselves with the PS3 hacking disaster and product issues with their cameras and computers. Sure they diversified into entertainment, but they're not the original company that once made high quality products.

Apple in the end did not crush Microsoft or IBM as Jobs wished from the start, but Apple obliterated Sony in the end. I'm not looking forward to the bloodbath that is about to happen with Apple releases a TV set. This might bankrupt several well known companies.

Couldn't happen to a more deserving company. They have completely butchered their reputation, their product lines and even manage to take what used to be a neat multipurpose device (the PS3) and ruin the ones already bought.

Great movie, and great reference, submitter. Now it's off to Google where the phrase "Crazy People quotes" will play a prominent role in the search.

Sony threw the market away. They refused to allow MP3s on their machine because the music division put pressure on the electronics division and they only used ATRAC and some horrible software to convert CDs. They could have had most of the market.

I worked in an electronics store in the 80's and the only portable cassette player that was equal or better than Sony's was Aiwa. They made some great portable players. Too bad Sony farked up everything by trying to cram proprietary media formats down our throats.

Here is illustrated the companies biggest problem. Time and time again, the content folks have come into conflict with the hardware folks. The hardware folks made cd-rw drives that people used to copy content providers content. Content providers would use draconian DRM that hurt the hardware's divisions image by relation.

There hasn't been much fallout due to the hacks, because sony did quite a bit to make it up to their fans. The folks most up in arms about it sympathized with the attackers to begin with.

What killed them more was feeding Ken's ego, and letting him do whatever he wanted design wise. The man gave no thought to things like cost, ease of development, etc. He wanted the be all end all of bullet points, and with the ps3 he got them. The fans, developers, etc all paid the cost. the Vita showed quite a bit of backtrack on that (minus the overpriced memory cards), and rumors about the ps4 show a similar backtracking. I just hope they aren't stupid enough to put that anti-used game stuff in.

The non gaming hardware divisions were also a mess. Too many models with no clear distinctions, iffy TV's, overpriced all around, etc. Samsung basically stole most of that market, and Apple, as you said, took the music market from them.

Really? A couple shiatty sony brand games, a sneak preview of their subscription service makes up for "we're not sure how much of your identity was compromised"? I could give a shiat whether or not I can run linux on a farking game system. Not to mention the "I agree not to sue Sony" bs I "agreed" to before I could start watching netflix again

I got four games out of it, and a year of id coverage. that's a lot more then most companies would have given you.

From the statistics, most people went back to playing as usual once things were back up. Most of the major haters, rants, etc, are from people who honestly hated sony to begin with. Ever seen a slashdot thread about the hacks? It was amazing, thousands cheering for the hackers, defending them, etc, with no one caring about those who had data stolen. To date slashdot still cheers at every piece of anti-sony news that comes out.

Can you blame them?

From rootkits to Taylor swift, when was the last thing sony did something right since the walkman?

Sony hurt themselves rootkitting people's computers. I haven't bought a single Sony product since that came out (the first time).

Nah the hardware itself on mine is perfectly fine just one day they stealth update installed censorware that prevents me from watching my legally created digital backups of my media that I had been accessing through the network via the PS3 as a media client. I don't really care much for console gaming but wanted a console for titles that were developmentally delayed (farking rockstar) on the PC and the PS3 had a fuller feature set then the xbox360 (bluray + a stronger ability to play 1080p video files). Then yah, they started crippling those extra abilities and now it is useless to me vs putting a PC under the TV instead.

Then there is yah that time Sony tried to cripple my computer when I put one of their music cds into it, thanks Sony you assholes.
