I can't remember the last time I tried a Snickers Bar, but I don't ever remember being that impressed with the taste.

Snickers is a fine chocolate bar, not my favorite, but certainly still amongst the top tier candy at Halloween.

One of the things worth going into a Trader Joes or World Market for is chocolate. I don't eat much of it but I know I'd rather swipe my wife's chocolate from Europe than my children's chocolate from the US.

Between Snickers and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Reese's PBC is just a little bit better.

Is Snickers really even chocolate? I like it as a candy bar Snickers is also full of peanuts and nougat and stuff. If I want chocolate I'll buy something that's 75% cocoa.

I'm not familiar with ALDI. Did a quick look at their site and nothing near me. There's Toblerone and other import brands at the local market too but my wife likes the ones with unreadable (to me) wrappers. I prefer the taste of the chocolate in unreadable wrappers. Though I'd take Toblerone over alot of mass marketed stuff. I don't dislike Snickers or it's ilk, I just prefer to raid my wife's fancy stuff on the rare occasion I do.

Milky Way Dark for best candy bar. Snickers dark....not so much.

I also like Take 5 bars. salty and sweet.

Cote D'or Noir de Noir for basic dark chocolate bar. I used to only bring this back from belgium for the wife and kids. Now our local Fresh Market has it at ridiculous prices. Since I don't go to Europe for work as much anymore, this will have to do.

Totally agree. On a side note, I'm pretty sure snickers isn't legally allowed to call it's "chocolate" chocolate.

ALDI owns Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's, far from being a quirky niche supermarket, is a carefully constructed brand of a giant European corporation.

There are some advantages to living in Switzerland: all the grocery stores have excellent Swiss chocolates. In many of them, the whole aisle is Swiss chocolates. Nom.

/still, a Snickers bar is enormously satisfying when one is hungry and doesn't have time to eat a proper meal.

That might explain why Trader Joe's had good chocolate. They had a "pound plus" (half kilo) bar of Belgian dark chocolate (with or without almonds) that was really good.

/Caveat: This was about 10 years ago. Haven't been to a Trader Joe's in quite a while.

Sorry USA, but your chocolate bar selection sucks ass. And even the ones in common with Canada taste horrible down there (Kit-Kat is a great example).

And things like Hersey chocolate is terrible compared to Dairy Milk. And that's just cheap consumable chocolate, never mind the really good stuff.

In Canada we're lucky enough to have the few good American chocolate bars, plus the English stuff.

2012-04-09 11:28:17 AM
If we're talking candy bars then my vote is for Twix. For chocolate I like Dove's dark but I have to say that Hershey's dark has come a long way from when it was first introduced.

For non-American my vote would go for Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate.

I probably need to try more chocolates.

I enjoy Moonstruck from Portland.

One reason is their dark choc, which is relatively low-carb, yet doesn't taste like roofing material.

Pfft. Weak. Snickers are the candy you eat when you don't recognize the other brands on the shelf. They're a good "standby", but hardly a top choice.

1. Skor
2. Heath
3. Reese's PB cups

Is this where i come to snob it all up and declare all non-american chocolate to be vastly superior to all american chocolate based solely on the fact that it is non-american? And then when i am presented with proof that american chocolate is as good or better in quality, taste, sales, and just about every other measurable category, i get to claim that those are just meaningless stastics taken from surveys of neolothic troglodytes?

Reese's Peanut Butter eggs are the first things to disappear from any Halloween or Easter basket, for precisely this reason.

OTOH, I could also freebase an entire tin of World's Finest Continental Almonds:

No, it's based on the fact that it generally tastes better.

Correct. The general public in this country has terrible taste in automobiles, coffee, music, movies, and food in general... how do you expect them to get chocolate right?
