Yeah, because they don't have electric powered golf carts and bicycles to get around in.

Yeah. I guess they have no choice but to pay.

It costs more, because it has to be shipped in, like the Florida Keys.

The rest of the country does not have to have it shipped in, because it's already there.

If you think they are making a huge profit, feel free to open your own competing station. It will be a good way to become a millionaire, assuming you are currently a billionaire.

Yeah. I have a long commute (56 miles, one way) and hate that it costs what it does. If it did get up to $7 here, I would have to move closer to work (even though I don't want to).

Gasoline is a finite resource and should be expensive. Rising gas prices will be especially painful for the U.S. because our entire way of life for at least the last 50-70 years has been based on everyone driving everywhere.

Not only is there a monopoly on supplying gas, but there is a limit on the number of cars (new window), further suppressing the market.

The fact is, this is a news story about a bunch of whiners who don't need a car in the first place.

A much more interesting story is the Watergate Exxon (new window), where gas costs almost as much as on Catalina, despite being on the mainland and having nearby competition.

Unless you have a refinery attached to your gas station, all gasoline sellers pay for shipping. This cost is call Lading and it is generally performed by a truck pulling a 12k gallon tanker. The actual cost of gasoline is the Terminal price + the lading cost of moving it from the terminal to the station. While a lengthy trip is obvious on an island, there are similar costs or higher all across the US. Pipelines don't go everywhere. Now a typical lading cost in Missouri (which has a ton of pipelines!) is about $300-400. Now that adds a bit over 3 cents to the cost of the gasoline. I am sure some of these remote areas might pay up to $1k for lading, but even then you are talking about 10-15 cents per gallon. So 'island' prices are still mostly higher profits for the gas station.

Our collective assholes are going to be soo sore by the end of summer. But maybe we'll get a reach-around.

Right, it's because it is a monopoly, not because supplying a single gas station on a remote island is more expensive then a station off the interstate.

Dear Jerk: As a general rule, if you're on Catalina island you should be counting your blessings.

My clients are the 1%, and as a rule they're the least likely people to count their blessings. I've met a few that are cool and down to Earth, but it's far, FAR more common for them to be entitled pricks who believe they should pretty much always get their way just because they're so special and important, and are the first to rage over petty BS that other people wouldn't even bat an eyelash over, if they even noticed it in the first place.

I also do a lot of business with the military, and I wish I would never ever have to meet another CEO, VP, Investment Banker or Consultant or Lawyer and could just service the military exclusively. Military people do vary like everyone else, but by and large they're usually no-nonsense people who treat you like a fellow human being and don't dick around with useless BS or need you to stroke their inflated egos. Even the Admirals and Generals are like that. 'Here's what I want, So that's what you've got? Great, I'll take X. Have a nice day and thanks for your time.' Love my military clients.

Actually, studies have been done that show people with money are generally more happy than those without. This is still true for people with lots and lots of money. They just are not much more happy than those with normal lots of money. In other words, money makes you happy, but after a certain amount, you only gain small amounts of happiness. Being poor always sucks.

Marcintosh: 1%er problems. No interest, sorry

Actually, most of the residents of the island are 99%ers who clean the rental homes of the 1%ers who make money off the tourists willing to spend $400 a night on a condo in the summer. There are a couple of well-off full time residents, but most of them just aren't. They are average people who happen to work on a tourist trap island, and it's easier to live there than commute on a boat an hour each way - although, I know a couple of people who do just that.

Gas has always and will always be expensive on Catalina. But as others have mentioned, when you fill up a golf cart once a month with 4 gallons, it doesn't hurt that much. The only people that don't really have the option of walking are the people that live full time in Hamilton Cove, and they don't care what the cost of gas, or anything else is.

But to put it in perspective, one of my best friends owns a dive shop on the island and he takes his dive boat 22 miles to Los Angeles, burning an 8th of a tank of fuel each way, when he needs to fill it up. It's still cheaper than filling it on the island. While he's there he goes to Costco and gets his monthly supplies and most of his groceries because those prices are stupid expensive as well.

Setting aside the ambiguity of your statement, fuel is most often trucked into the various gas stations in the Keys.

Current gas prices on Key West are between $4.12 and $4.20. That's about $0.25 more per gallon than Orlando. Link (new window)

madgonad: So 'island' prices are still mostly higher profits for the gas station.

The island is 22 miles off shore, with a permanent population of less than 4000, a cap on the number of vehicles, and maybe a hundred miles of road. They don't sell much gasoline and that cost to get the tanker out to the island can't be cheap. They might not be making that great a profit as an ROI as you suspect.

What kills me is seeing gas being 10-15 cents more expensive in the poor parts of Dallas. I can understand a higher price in the ultra-rich Highland Park / SMU area, but it's the same price around Lake June and Buckner.

lol, nice. You actually got an audible chortle out of me.

And no, I'm just a drone for a large, very well known, international corporation. I don't make a lot of money, my clients and corporate masters do. I'm a regular old member of the proletariat, I just happen to be one who wears suits.

As to Thunderpipes' point, I didn't say they were unhappy. I said they were by and large entitled pricks who believe that the fact that they want something means they also deserve it. They have tons of money and they spend their life consuming and bullying those they feel are "beneath" them and feeling justified in doing so. What's not to be happy about?

The fuel we get in Humboldt County is barged about ten times farther than it is to Catalina Island and it's not costing us much more than for those who live in the Ess Eff bay area.

Aren't there two gas stations right next to all the rental car places at Orlando airport that charge exhorbitant prices because everyone is returning their rental cars and they make a small mint?
