mainstreet62: Stefanwulf: mainstreet62: If you're the government, how the FARK do you prove when a woman menstruated?

Confidential medical records? Federal agents in their homes? Uterus-cam?

WTF?

They require that the physician performing the abortion or the referring physician examine the woman and estimate the "probable gestational age".

From the bill:
"In making that determination, the physician or referring physician shall make any inquiries of the pregnant woman and perform or cause to be performed all medical examinations, imaging studies and tests as a reasonably prudent physician in the community, knowledgeable about the medical facts and conditions of both the woman and the unborn child involved, would consider necessary to perform and consider in making an accurate diagnosis with respect to gestational age."

So in other words, they're violating individual privacy.

Women aren't individual, they are the property of their fathers and/or husbands and/or brothers.

/am I doing it right?

So your position is that Brittney Spears, Guidette from Jersey Shore, and Sarah Palin's kid should be legally required to carry any pregnancy to term? That losing their gift to future generations is a tragedy?

no, just that those women gave no more thought to getting pregnant than to choosing what kind of bagel they want for breakfast. it isn't hard to pay attention.

You're bad at arguments

Yeah, I tried to draft a reply but had to give up when I noticed he was now attacking women who had chosen not to abort. By calling them stupid for having sex. Or maybe being too stupid to want children.

Or maybe it's a hipster thing, and he doesn't think that they appreciate children at the same level he does.

and i posted some pics of some known female idiots that OBVIOUSLY gave no more thought to getting pregnant than to what flavor bagel they like - basically saying "O RLY".

how is this hard to follow?

of course not all women are like that. but let's not pretend that every young woman that gets knocked up had even BEGUN to think about the repercussions. They don't.

You are exhausting.

2012-04-09 05:37:48 PM
You asked the question:
So when, factually, does life begin?

You derped this:
But if someone stabs her in the stomach and the fetus dies, that's murder.

Then you derpled down:
Correct. The moment that life growing in her womb is no longer wholly dependent on her for survival, I am no longer pro-choice.
If you stab a woman in the womb and it kills her 15 week old fetus, we just agreed the 15 week old fetus is not a separate life form, it's not a person yet. The mother survives, no separate life form was killed, yet I would still call it murder, which necessitates one actually was.

When I called you on it, you triple-derped:
A 39 week old fetus is by no means dependent on the mother for survival. It's just in there enjoyin its time gettin bigger and fatter. Not necessary by any means but it sure is nice.

And again:
The test is simple - extract a 39 week old fetus from a pregnant woman. Will it live or die? It will live. Therefore it is not dependent on the woman for survival.

Then you moved the goalposts:
This is true, this was never in discussion. The discussion was about viability you farkwad.

Make your case, then. The "air-breather" test for the beginning of life is a bright, wide, easily-defined and easily-defended line.

And to be accurate, when you claim, You replied to me dude. Remember? I was addressing skullkrusher about how my religion addresses the issues.

My position on abortion has four characteristics that yours lacks:
1) Life begins at birth, not some ill- or un-defined time during fetal gestation.
2) It's logically consistent, and legally and morally defensible.
3) It spares women the horrific Santorum torture of treating an aborted fetus as a person, and spares society totally inappropriate, specious "murder" charges.
4) The legality and proper bounds for legal sanctions are easily and readily defined.

Since your position seems to differ significantly in the implementation of details because it is - on its surface - inconsistent, I challenge you to clarify it so that it is not.

Diogenes: Your Blog Sucks: For The Prettiest One: Not to be a dick, but in the medical profession, all gestational markers for timing (like getting a 20 week ultrasound anatomy screen or being "due" at 40 weeks) are all taken from the mother's last menstrual period. The bill is just following medical convention.

Arizona still sucks, though.

Bears repeating. Doesn't mean the GOP isn't a bunch of douchebags who are succeeding in their master plan to roll back the rights of women to make decisions about their own bodies. My pregnancy with my son was recorded in my medical records as beginning June 8, 2010 when he wasn't conceived until June 19th. That's the accepted method of timing a pregnancy.

I think the widely different fields of medicine and legislation are sufficient to say that dating method is not a good "one size fits all" measurement.

It is only the method of timing a pregnancy as instituted by male medicos. Those who are really "in the know" (aka midwives who have millenia of observation to go back on) time the pregnancy differently: count back 3 months from the first day of the last period and then forward 10 days to give you the due date. Actual gestation dates are based on that calculated due date. Much more accurate than the doctor's method. The medical establishment redefined pregnancy as a disease and treat it accordingly. The "flat on your back with feet in a stirrup" position is the worst possible for giving birth but is the most convenient for the MD's. It was originally devised by the quacks attending the mistresses of King Louis XVI since he got his jolly's by watching them give birth and the squat just didn't give him the view he wanted.

I'm working on a way to sue anyone who denies these people their constitutional rights to things like prenatal care for their gestational unit (mother) and post-conception health benefits (well infant care, etc.). I'd like to make it so that any politician who votes to cut benefits for pregnant mothers and the in-womb people in their custody would be civilly liable to those in-womb people for damages caused by the benefit cuts.

Oh, piffle. You know perfectly well that if such a law were to pass, I wouldn't be able to sue anyone anyway, because being a woman, I'd be down in some kitchen somewhere, pregnant with my 19th baby and making another plate of sammiches for my menfolks.

FTFA: Under Arizona's H.B. 2036, the state would recognize the start of the unborn child's life to be the first day of its mother's last menstrual period.

Holy crap! How insane do you have to be to think that up?

Aarontology: sno man: What's the next step? Arresting women for terminating their pregnancy, you know, for not having actually gotten pregnant that month?

After this bit, I wouldn't be surprised.

The police will be required to investigate every miscarriage.

AZ moves to shorten the 20 week window by 2 weeks?

Wow, that place really needs it's own tag.

Liberals are true pro choicers and pro lifers.

Conservatives are pro forced birth and anti life.

A woman either has full autonomy over her own body or she becomes a societal brood mare, chattel without rights.

I'm confused... I was expecting this bill to be a conservative crack-down on abortion, but looking at the bill it is a very liberal abortion bill by global standards.

Twenty weeks is very generous; at that point the fetus starts to become viable outside the womb on its own... by 24 weeks the survival rate outside of the womb hits 50%. For this reason, most other countries cap abortions at 12 weeks (end of the first trimester). For example, France, Germany, and Italy all limit abortions to the first 12 weeks unless the mother's life is at risk.

Yes, the bill requires an ultrasound, but the reasoning for that seems to be the generous twenty week cap. At that point, you are dangerously close to the the fetus becoming viable; the ultrasound would be necessary to ensure that you aren't off by a couple weeks. The original language of the bill only required the ultrasound if you were past the first trimester; too bad they didn't keep that language.

The mandatory waiting period appears to be 24 hours. That's unusually low; the norm is usually 7 days. For example, France and Italy have 7 day waiting periods. Germany is unusually generous; they have a 3 day waiting period.

Yes, the date of birth is estimated using the last menstrual period, but this is the most common way of measuring pregnancies by health care professionals across the world, and has been for over a hundred years now. The reason this approach is so popular is because it attaches the pregnancy to something easily measureable.

So all in all, I'm not sure what the fuss is about. This is a more generous abortion bill than you would expect to find in most other countries.

whereas the child being murdered by abortion is completely innocent.

Psalm 51:5 -- Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
