Grables'Daughter: Why?

Because it's a Rube Goldberg machine.

300 steps isn't the most complicated in history, though.

Isn't it cheating for a RG machine to use steam power? I mean, unless the machine lights a fire and creates the steam itself?

Somebody should make a rube goldberg machine composed of other rube goldberg machines.

I like that one that was on fark a while ago in the photography studio. It is much more entertaining when it covers a few thousand square feet. Link (new window)

Awesome but I feel as if it cheats a little using all those pistons and the like.

Thinking several of the items used are on the cusp of making this not a true Rube Goldberg device, though I believe the only criteria is performing mundane tasks with interconnected and overly complicated machines. For me, anything powered from outside of the device should not be used for the intended purpose such as incandescent bulbs used to heat or toasters propelling toast to strike something. Still, the intricacy and setup were great, and anyone who creates such a thing is probably more knowledgeable on what does or does not constitute a Rube Goldberg device.

Hmm the OK GO This Too Shall Pass was a decent music video of a Rube Goldberg machine. Albeit it took multiple takes to get correct. They have a lot of weird videos.

Rube Goldberg machines are technically cool. The best kind of cool.

The article's machine was cool, but a little too busy for my tastes heh.

This was nice, but it had a little too much going on at once--it was hard to follow from one step to the next.

The longest Rube Goldberg device I ever watched was Der Lauf Der Dinge. (new window) It's extremely low tech but involves a ton of pyrotechnics and chemicals. (I was sort of hoping it would have more of an ending, but it was entertaining to watch for the most part.)

now off to watch a video of 8 godzillion dominoes.

I'd like to see it close up and in slow motion and without the fatass blocking part of the shot.

I love these things, and it clearly was a spectacular amount of work, but that was probably the most inelegant RGD I've seen. I've got a hotshot guitarist friend who has "just because you can does not mean you should" written on the side of his guitar. These guys should take note.

I have to agree - things happening slow enough to tell what's going on and the sheer scale make your link better.

No, that's just a useless, overcomplicated contraption composed of rubes.

Of course they would need multiple takes for that, especially since they had to sync it with the song; it doesn't diminish how cool it is. That's also one of the fun things about watching it, to catch evidence of previous takes in the background.

And White Knuckles took 124 takes.

Yeah the first time I watched the video, I wondered why they were covered in paint.

Always thought White Knuckles would make a good Cursday submission.

Honda's Cog commercial for the win. It's aesthetic and non cluttered with well thought out steps. 606 takes according to snopes.

Kinda sucked.

It was hard to follow along because a lot of the contraptions relied on things unseen, like electric power.

Part of the fun of RG devices is seeing how the various parts work and operate together. So mechanical power only should be used, aided by gravity and kinematics.

Because sometimes people posses a high enough IQ that the nightly news or latest episode of Jersey Shore just doesnt entertain them.

Or maybe they just did it because they wanted to...

That's pretty ironic considering at the end the guy says: "Isn't it nice when things just work?"
