(The Daily Beast)   Caravaggio didn't die of syphilis. He was killed by the Knights of Malta in a murder endorsed and hidden by the Catholic Church. No, this is not the plot of the next Dan Brown novel   (thedailybeast.com ) divider line

I'd say it's probable.

I both hate and admire Dan Brown. On one hand, his plots are contrived, needlessly convoluted and his solutions are trite and predictable. But on the other hand...he's making oodles of money writing bad novels!

gotdammit! I write better than him, why can't I get MY stuff noticed by the big publishing companies!?

Well... I mean of course.... some professor with access to double secret hidden Vatican archives says it true in his new book.... it must be true...

How the hell is hunting down a convicted murderer who escaped from prison and is wanted, dead or alive (preferably dead), "evil"?

The church liked to target prominent individuals. Galileo and DaVinci were both branded as heretics.

And the church leaders simply move the pedophile clergy to another parish, under a veil of secrecy.

Because your fan-fiction about Mister Spock seducing Legolas in the showers at Hogwarts appeals to a very select audience.

It was suicide. He was depressed that his attempts at finger-painting didn't receive the commercial acclaim he sought.

actually its more transhumanist fiction with a mix of political conspiracy and applied hyper-dimensional mathmatics and Non-Euclidean geometry.

You sure? Because that sounds like the kind of story an admirer would spread to hide the embarrassing truth that he did, indeed, die of syphilis.

I think you've got your answer.

Try a lower, more common denominator.

This poster for "The Borgias" season 2 really reminds me of Caravaggio's style. Need to peel one off the side of a bus...

FlashHarry: for more hot-blooded caravaggio, see the brilliant simon schama's "power of art." (new window)

Well, that was pretty much my afternoon. Fascinating and interesting stuff that I know nothing about. Thanks FlashHarry!

Doesn't make sense to me. Caravaggio was one of the Artists used as the tip of the spear of the Counter-reformation. Where previously you had bored looking Jesus's up on crosses, seemingly indifferent to their wounds (as opposed to earlier Byzantine depictions as the Man of Sorrow), Caravaggio and other Baroque artists reignited that style. Where Protestants and Lutherans preferred to leave Christ off the cross (after all, Salvation, they said, comes not from him being put on it, but being taken off it), Baroque artists played up the fact that Jesus died for them. If anything (as mentioned upthread), Caravaggio was killed for the content of his character, not the content of his art (which was, lets not remember, comissioned).

It will go out of style when humans learn to settle their differences with reason, compassion and dignity.

Ie. When Hell Freezes Over. Or we stop being partially-hairless killer monkeys.

The only thing that comes to me after reading TFA is: "How many people even knew who Caravaggio was (I do), or could identify a piece of his art if they saw it (I couldn't)?" That includes not only all the people reading TFA, but those posting here.......
