Well, they are selling two different models concurrently, so you have to specify which one has the better screen.

Honest Bender: Have you ever heard someone refer to a non-iPad tablet as an ipad? No, of course you haven't. So to answer your stupid Apple commercial... oh, excuse me, "article" No. No it's not.

I have. I had someone ask me an email question (I'm a tech) just recently about their "ipad" (no caps) which turned out to be a Lenovo tablet. So yeah, it happens. And it's likely to happen more as time goes by, not less.

The point people in the thread seem to be missing about with this is that Apple does not want the term "iPad" to become generic. It is not a good thing for the sales of actual iPads if a large percentage of the population thinks any tablet by any company is an iPad.

It commoditizes their brand.

I used to subscribe to a magazine called Writers Digest (not sure if it's still around) which had articles for writers. At least half of the ads were by companies not trying to sell their product, but trying to teach writers to use phrases like "he grabbed a Kleenex brand tissue" or "he grabbed a tissue" rather than "he grabbed a kleenex".

That was a lot of money spent not to make sales, but simply to avoid this commoditization issue because it's so very damaging to a company's brand.

So it's a potential problem for Apple, not a benefit.

It'll have the same effect the iPhone and the iPod have had: generic names used by Baby Boomers and out-of-touch Gen Xers who still think game consoles are called Nintendos.

The rest of us will call them tablets.

Incidentally, most of the kids I've talked to aren't interested in iPads, because they're old news. A lot of them want Android tablets because of the large number of free* apps. It'd be nice if some manufacturer could deliver on an incredible Android tablet, but at least for now, we've got the Asus Transformer and the Sony Tablet S.

*Free on Android tends to mean ad-supported or begware, but still. Free is free.

You'd have a much easier time defending that position if the name "iPad 2" had... you know, actually appeared on the previous model. Or on its packaging.

Yes, I know, Apple refers to it as the "iPad 2" all over the place, but if you actually look at them, all three generations just say "iPad" on the back.

"They gave birth to the whole category and brought it to life."

STOP REPEATING THE LIE. There were thousands of tablet PCs (some even at 17 inch quad core 4 gig of RAM) before the iPad came out. Apple set the form factor back SIGNIFICANTLY with their shiat specs.

Mad_Radhu: skinink: I'm still wondering what an iPad does better than an Android Tablet. I have the original Asus Transformer and it's pretty good overall. There hasn't been a point where I couldn't find an app for something I wanted to do and Google's store has a lot of good content.

Right now, the latest model iPad just blows everything else out of the water in terms of resolution, plus the color gamut of the screen is superb, so photos and videos look great. Digital comics, especially those that have been recently updated for the higher resolution screen, also look gorgeous on the display. Text based content like books and magazines also is very readable due to the razor sharp text. Android and Windows 8 tablets will catch up in resolution soon, but right now no other tablet beats the iPad in the display category.

You know the screen in the iPad is designed and produced by Samsung, right?

/Idiots are the reason why Apple has any sales.

Mugato: Mad_Radhu: Right now, the latest model iPad just blows everything else out of the water

When new products come out they tend to beat anything else already in the market.

Next month when the next Android tablet comes out it will also blow everything else out of the water.

Important to note too that the screen (made by Samsung) is the only thing Apple has going for it. Android tablets already have better processors and more RAM.

2012-04-09 09:38:09 AM
skinink: Maybe aside from books, what really needs such great resolution? And maybe movies, although most of the movies I would put on the tablet doesn't really need the latest and greatest resolution. For Facebook, email, Youtube vids (which a lot aren't great resolution anyways) general browsing and games, HD equivalent just isn't needed. I'm sure the iPad looks fine but for the general public I feel Retina Display is like the gimmick Intel used to pull by constantly bragging it had the fastest CPU: how many people really take advantage of that feature?

One of the issues is that the content is designed at a certain resolution. So great that your screen can do 10000000x10000000 but if the content is 800x600 then your screen isn't worth shiat.

Bullseyed: You know the screen in the iPad is designed and produced by Samsung, right?

So? Samsung doesn't use the displays themselves, so the original statement stands. I don't get why Samsung making the display somehow invalidates that, particularly when it's not used by anyone else.

As is the A5 processor in the iPad and iPhone and the flash memory used in the devices. Idiots that believe that Samsung is actually a competitor to Apple instead of a business partner is the only reason Samsung has any sales. I almost think their patent litigation is just kabuki theater to distract the hardcore Android fanboys from the fact that Samsung makes bucket loads of money off of the iProducts.

Addicted: I get more people asking me if my Galaxy S2 is an iPhone (or 'like' an iPhone) than I get iPad comments about my Transformer Prime. At that point, I get to talk about Android.. which apparently is a type of iPhone.

But, if Apple loses their brand recognition, its their own fault. Sticking a lowercase letter i in front of the generic term for a device is not a good long-term marketing plan.

And, while I'm at it, using the term 'new' to describe your latest product is just stupid. Its a farking iPad 3, not just 'the new iPad.' And why the fark journalilsts and the plebes on the street are letting Apple get away with that bullshiat is beyond me.

I'm seriously leaning towards the Transformer Prime, as I want something I can use to take pics of wifey's camera on vacation without filling the tablet memory.

Though I guess now I should wait for their next release.

So the current trend of iPhones doesn't back up his argument? My iPhone 4S doesn't say 4S anywhere on it. In fact, no iPhone has ever had anything beyond "iPhone" on the back. I'm fine with calling it the iPad 3. At least that is better than calling the original iPhone the iPhone 2G. Whoever came up the the "2G" is an idiot.

I call my MP3 player a walkman.

Yes, I'm old. Why do you ask?

I have an mp3 Walkman that I used for years (5?) until I got a nano last year. It was basically a flash drive with a headphone jack in the end, and minimal buttons. You could even use the hd space for doc storage. Pretty sweet, especially since it was only $35 new.

Coincidentally, I was cleaning out boxes last week, and I found my walkman and discman collection.

Was that one made before or after SOny figured out that customers don't want to convert their entire library to ATRAC format in order to put it on their Walkman?

I'm still using a Creative Labs Zen Nano Plus for my MP3s. Small, efficient, and still does the job well. (And, you can also use it for doc storage, too.) The best part, of course, is that it's not my phone, doesn't care about DRM, and as a small uni-tasker, no one else wants the damned thing, so I don't have to worry about theft.
