A deacon in our church had the same news. There wasnt a dry eye in the house.

Dying with dignity - hope I have the strength for that.

If there were more priests like him, we would have none of the insanity that torments us all today.

The Heavenly Choir awaits you father. Godspeed.

It must be sad though for all those parishioners, I mean imagine how many of them he knows closely. He must have taken the virginity of half of those kids.

I heard at his last sermon he just freestyled over the choir's "Our God is a Holy God" for 30 minutes before saying "What are you going to do- fire me?" and dropping the mic.

"Men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest"

You get bonus points for using cancerous entrails.

He sounded like a decent guy, aside from that whole teaching people fairy tales are real shtick. The world definitely needs fewer of those type of people.

Final words to the Congregation: Jesus didn't save me. He won't save you either.

I didn't exactly find anything in there all that inspiring. There is no joy in sickness or suffering or death. So don't glorify it, because watching a loved one die sucks, dying in agony because of some incurable disease, never knowing when you wake up just how much pain you'll have to endure that day, these are not joyful things. They are terrifying things, they are awful things. That's why you're at the doctors in the first place, to try and get experts who actually know something about life and death to help mitigate and manage your poor circumstances. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging life sucks when life sucks.

Everything else in there is platitudes that are ripe for after school species and the attempt at a serious life lesson on a sitcom, so it's hard to take it seriously.

Did he have time to apologise for encouraging his congregation to donate money that was used to help protect child rapists?

You can have this argument when Christians stop trying to legalize bullying of gay people by Christians, among other abuses you do every day of people who dare think differently than you.

That's the point. You're going to die. I'm going to die. Everyone who reads this comment is going to die, as will everyone who doesn't.

What are you going to do between now and the day they throw six feet of dirt over you?

some of you people need to unclench - it'll hurt less.

if you don't want people to make snarky child-rape remarks about your organization, don't rape children and then systematically cover it up for decades.

Yeah, ignore all the great things this guy did for others. He doesn't deserve to be appreciated because he's a f*cking priest.

What an asshole comment. This isn't about the guy deserving special attention because he's a dying priest. It's about the example of humanity he's set for others and all the joy he brought into people's lives over a life of giving back to the community.

I am quite sure you haven't done a tenth of the good things this man has done in his life.

The "great things" he did like tell people there was some magical man in the sky watching them, so they had to give him money so they'd get in to heaven? What a wonderful guy.

Or telling people they can't use contraception despite our planet being over-populated and the risk of disease?

The world can do with a few less people like that, thanks.

The Catholics uplifted an awful lot of altar boys' frocks, and they did a good job of hiding the fact. Does that count?

God rest that man's soul. The church needs a million copies of this guy to fill the ranks of the priesthood, not more robotic demagogues who repeat Vatican talking points every Sunday.

For every 1000 kids they force to be born into hideous poverty by denying people birth control, they feed 2.

This man did? Do you know that for a fact? We don't know how this man felt about the church's actions on the many different pedophilia scandals. Maybe he was appalled by it but also so full of faith in the other ideas that he felt he must continue on as a positive example to the community and felt he represented all the good the church does. There ARE good people in the world, believe it or not. The church also does not say "hey, pedophilia is cool." They might imply that with their handling of the scandals, but they don't teach that it is acceptable.

Seriously? I mean, I'm an atheist too, but are you really trying to say nothing good has EVER come from religion? Schools, hospitals, feeding the poor, etc.? Churches have been known to do that sort of thing.

2012-04-08 09:46:45 AM

Bedstead Polisher: This man did? Do you know that for a fact?

He collected and passed on money, knowing that that money would be used to prevent child rapists from being brought to justice, to prevent poverty-stricken women from having access to birth control, to lobby against divorce for women who are victims of domestic violence, to spread malicious and false medical claims, and to promote discrimination against homosexuals. Catholics can't claim ignorance on this one any more. If you've given money to the Church in the past ten years, you're liable.
