Pants full of macaroni!!: Didn't like Friends, but liked The Whole Nine Yards. Is there something wrong with me?

No, I agree with those opinions. The Whole Nine Yards may have had Matthew Perry but it also had Bruce Willis and a naked Amanda Peet in a violent R rated comedy. All Friends had were a collection of douchebags hanging around a coffee shop and NYC apartments they couldn't possibly afford.

Yeah and his career was almost dead until he came out as gay then, instead of hiding from it he mocked the image and had fun with it, people like that instead of people acting like a victim. If people like you then people hits you to be on their shows since people will watch. And I'm sure the cast of friends never have to work a day in their life again, personally I would rather have been on friends and never worrying about money.

Ha! You're programmed to measure success based on money and not personal fulfillment or job satisfaction.

You think How I met your mother offers some greater measure of fulfillment than Friends? That's like saying a shiat sandwich is better than a crap souffle.

NPH career was never dead - since Doogie - he has worked constantly on TV, movies, and stage. And he was already on How I Met Your Mother before he came out.

You have to wonder?

Alan Tyduk's role. They even look and act the same: Sassy smart-ass blond guy.

He can't be Mal Reynolds, or even worse, Adam Baldwin's character.

Marley'sGirl: seems like the whole thread has forgotten Doogie Howser.

I remember it (and now the annoying theme music is stuck in my head, thanks). There's no way it was as insanely lucrative as Friends was, though. The six leads were each getting a million dollars per episode by the time it ended, and it's been so heavily syndicated that they're each still probably bringing in millions per year from it.

How I Met Your Mother sucks dog balls. I watched half an episode before I had to turn it off. It was like all the actors had a bet amongst themselves to see who could give the shiattiest performance. And they all won.

It's too bad he didn't get it. I like Sean Maher, and thought he did an excellent job in his role, but NPH is a much bigger name, and him being there might have help the show last longer.

Mugato: RandomAxe: Perry has had, you know, the drug problems, but he's done a couple of shows as good as or better than the better seasons of Friends. They just haven't gotten support from the networks

I saw him as a guest star on some stupid show recently. He looks beat to shiat. Whatever he was on is a helluva drug.

I think Aniston absorbed everyone else's powers of landing a role, which is why she still has a career and the others can't get arrested (that's just an expression, Matthew).

I think Courtney Cox is probably the one who has had the most consistent career. And she is involved in production, not just a role in front of the camera.

Another vote for "couldn't stand Friends"

After doogie he was relegated to bit player in tv movies or episode actor, meaning he didnt have a regular role, his other series tanked then less than a year after Mother was on he was threatened with being outed but just came out and was never apologetic for it or acted like he hid anything, he took his personal life and made it no big deal, hes an actor and they all play characters. He was never fully out until he was told someone was going to out him, I think at the time the reasoning was someone thought he was hiding it since his Mother character is supposedly a chauvinistic person, I dont really know since I have never watched the show.

Oh and here was the people article where he kind of alludes to the supposed outing of him.

The reason I remember it was because my mother loved doogie howswer and this seemed to come out around the same time she realized my sister was gay and never going to have kids.

Weird the way some memories stick to your brain sometimes.....

FTA: 4. Lisa Kudrow was Frasier's original Roz
The future Phoebe was cast in the Cheers spinoff, but got fired during rehearsals for its pilot. The director of that pilot - a.k.a. one of the guys who fired Kudrow - also directed 15 episodes of Friends, including its first.

Can I point out that on TV the director has no power whatsoever to fire anyone, especially a central character? The head writer/showrunner and the network have that power. The director does what he is told. This isn't the movies.

Agreed. I wanted to hate HIMYM, but the writers and producers do a good job of bringing in insignificant details that have major consequences later within the episode or even in subsequent seasons. I'm not a fan of laugh-track sitcoms, HIMYM is better and smarter than most.

This. 'Friends' is an object lesson in collective bargaining.

The characters in Friends were all whiny assholes. Really. You would not associate with anyone like those people.

How I Met your Mother is just another crap NY yuppie show that happens to have Ted, one of the biggest pussy characters ever on television, plus a flaming gay actor playing the show's resident chick slayer. Very unconvincingly.

I totally believe NPH as the raging druggie in the HK movies, though.

Martonio: Oh joy, a "Friends" hate thread. Too bad one of them didn't go to Duke University, and then FARK could go full circle.

Oh so everyone has to love Friends now? Well how about this, Seinfeld is my favorite modern sitcom and I still watch it whenever it's on. In fact, I just got home, odds are it's on some channel right now and I'm going to watch it. Now Seinfeld has to be at least as unhip around here as Friends, probably more. So your point is invalid.

SharkTrager: The people in Seinfeld are worse. And if you watch the finale and realize just how awful they were it's hard to go back and watch the show.

Yeah but the people in Seinfeld are supposed to be assholes. The people on Friends are supposed to be adorable and you're supposed to want to hang out with them. That's the difference.

Not to mention all the money they still make thanks to syndication. Seinfeld wasn't a billion dollar show until every cable channel and local affiliate wanted to run six episodes a day.

The only real issue I've heard about on the set of Mother was that he was accused of favoritism on getting his now husband a part. Other than that it was no real secret that he was gay. Hell a friend of mine slept with him - which makes NPH one degree away from me in terms of who slept with who. The coming out was a publicity stunt that hasn't impacted his career pro or con the way I see it.

When the entire cast of your hit show come to the table as one and says "This is what we want" then that is collective bargaining. Without that the studio can easily say "Well we were thinking about writing out your character. The other five can do very well, and they have all agreed already..."
All six agents working together is the same as all six actors working together.

How I Met Your Mother is basically "Friends" set in a bar instead of a coffee shop.

That said, the haters in this thread can suck it. How I Met Your Mother is some solid comedy and on par with Friends. So long as they wrap it up in the next few years (The age of the kids in 2030 basically requires them to ) and get out of the Ted/Robin narrative sinkhole they keep falling in, they can end on a solid performance.

2012-04-08 06:04:29 PM
Let's get some things straight (tee hee) about NPH - he did a bunch of TV movies and stage roles after Dougie ended. He even had a sitcom with Tony Shaloub from 98-99. He wasn't out when he did Starship Troopers and H&K Go To White Castle, or when HIMYM started. NPH was dragged out of the closet by Perez Hilton, who posted photos of Neil sucking face with dudes. Now he is in every TV show and movie that ever existed, even Debbie Does Dallas (he was Naked Dude #8 in the shower scene).

I think in the end, they will reveal that there is no "mother", that it was all in the imagination of a nutbag telling a story to his "kids" (in reality a bunch of cats). Or they'll pull a Crying Game and the "mother" is really a dude and the kids were bought from crackheads for $17 and a bottle of Wild Turkey.
