Cats and dogs share a common ancestor from about 40 million years ago and biologists have theorized that foxes kept more of the feline traits then other canines. They do have a lot of catlike behaviors. So you're sorta right.

Many of the similarities are likely due to convergent evolution, too. Foxes hunt the same sort of prey as small felines, and in similar environments, so they've developed some of the same specialist adaptations -- like vertical-slit pupils, a high-angle pounce and retractable claws (though I think they're only partially retractable in foxes).

I happened upon a rather nice fox once. I was on a animal trail on a small mountain. The little black fox came around the bend at the same time I did, scared the hell out of me. He had a small marmot in his mouth and, after seeing he'd scared me, offered the marmot to me. I politely declined and he took the marmot back. He said it was nice to meet me and that, if we ever met again, his name was Gordon. He plunked back into the bushes and disappeared.

Yes, that's exactly how I remember that encounter, though that may not be how it actually occurred. I'll never figure out why I thought it was a good idea to be on that mountain anyway.

I'm about ninety percent sure that this fox is just sleeping and not taxidermy. Here's hoping.

Well if you were hanging around so many large predators they might show up once in a while.

Fun fact: Based on comparative DNA analysis, grey foxes are, phylogenically speaking, the most "basal" (or evolutionarily primitive) of all existing canids. Which might help explain why the retained the ability to climb trees.

There's a family of foxes living in the meadow across from my porch... Every so often when I'm out having a smoke mama fox will come out to the edge of the lawn, she'll look at me, I'll look at her, you can almost hear the "oh. crap. Human." in her mind, and eventually she'll turn back and disappear into the tall grass. It's always nice to see.

It's also why my creampuff of a cat never goes more than 10 feet from the porch.

Also a CSB/

Every spring I pack out to the southern tip of Virginia and camp on the beach for a couple days. Almost every year, I've had a group of red foxes that mill about my campsite, probably looking for handouts.

At night, they all gather on the perimeter and stare at me while I read or whatever. Several sets of glowing eyes. I've resisted the urge to feed them, but I think I could probably do it.

Also, beach deer. Disgusting, tick-infested asshole animals.

I was out on the last hunt of the season with Bull Run Hunt last Saturday and we got a nice run out of a small, bushy, handsome Red Fox. He ran across the road right next to me, with the hounds about a minute behind. He did his usual one mile circle, and went down into his burrow. The hounds showed up at the burrow, did their usual "you got served" yapping, and we pulled them off and went back for the hunt breakfast. That particular fox always gives us a good run.
