Yeah, I guess I just don't "get" Pinterest. I tried it out, and it didn't do anything for me. Just another way to get notifications about every single little annoying thing that those you are connected to drag up. Bleah.

/and I don't mind social networking and am happy to use FaceBook, Twitter, and even G+ (a lot of scientists and science writers use it, so there is some worth for me)

I use Pinterest for interesting things that I want to keep track of, kind of like a photo version of a bookmark, nothing more, nothing less.

I'm convinced that as a site though, it's contributing to a completely globalized mass culture. I see stuff show up that other people posted that originated on Chinese message boards, and I see friends in Asia posting recipes and craft ideas that originated on the mommyblog of some random bored midwestern housewife.

The single time I visited Pinterest, I had a simultaneous DeVeDe creation going (about 2/3 done), and clicking on one image caused my work computer to shut itself down.

I have never had that happen before, and the dependent variable was the visit to Pinterest. Normally, the college maintains its equipment in really good shape.

My wife uses pinterest for baby stuff and recipes. She's made some really good food from recipes she's found. Also, some simple, helpful household tips (like using those giant black paperclips to keep your cel phone charger cord anchored to a table). While I don't use it, myself, I don't see what all the hate is about. It's just a way for folks to share their interests.

Even more truthiness.

I tried Pinterest and found it way too femmy.

I also didn't find anything that I couldn't do with Tumblr.

People just reblog a lot of stuff they either don't have or didn't make just to feel good. Okay, I guess.
And the "pinboards" are not different from "tags" in practical terms.

Now, 52% of the world population is women, so obviously the site has a lot of growth potential.

Pinterest will become the GoodHousekeeping/random-female-oriented-magazine of yesteryear.

And Google+ isn't going anywhere. Only geeks and geeks-wannabes are using that site. Hot chicks and dance club jocks are nowhere near the place.

Pinterest is 90% a combination of:

- Shopping / food porn

and

- Hobbies that people want to have without having to actually do

There's nothing wrong with that, but there's nothing sensational about it, either.

Pinterest's reknown as an innovative bookmarking site is mostly due to the general decline of bookmarking. All the major browsers have shiatty bookmarking, but the public's attention span is so short they don't remember that bookmarking used to be much better.

How has bookmarking gotten worse? Name examples. Everything that has worked in Netscape 4 and Internet Explorer 5.5 still works in Firefox 11. Ctrl or Cmd D to to bookmark, and organize into folders as you please. You can even sync your bookmarks, history and logins across several computers.

I totally get that not everyone is going to like every social networking site. If people don't like Google+ and don't want to use - I absolutely understand. I also understand that my friends may or may not represent the population at large but.....having said that.....

Most of my friends and family actively complain about Facebook. Everyone has some story about how Facebook screwed up something or changed something. Even the people I know who enjoy integrated Facebook games still hate that OTHER people's annoying Facebook games spam them.

Google+ seems like a totally awesome alternative to Facebook. And whenever I talk to people about it, I always hear that 'Yeah - but nobody uses it' as the sole reason for not using it.

I have friends and family who actively dislike Facebook but who won't use Google+ because 'nobody' uses it. They won't even make accounts!

All it would take for critical mass is for people like my friends to create accounts. It's so trivial - considering how most online time is spent (wasted on sites like Fark and Facebook).

I guess what amazes me is the unbelievable amount of laziness. Again, if someone loves Facebook and doesn't want to use anything else - more power to them. But when you are willing to actively complain about how bad Facebook is - while being unable to create an account on a new replacement that doesn't have many of the things you are complaining about.....

It's like complaining about the TV show that is currently on; but refusing to press the up button on the remote control.

It seems more like bystander effect. They're waiting for enough other people to make G+ worthwhile, but that's what everyone is doing so no one actually makes the move.

All Google needs to do (IMHO) is partner with some breast cancer charity or something and promise to donate $1 for every new person who signs up for Google+ and posts a message.

In the fine print they could have protection against abuse and an upper limit of X million dollars.

But whatever - this is way off-topic. Pinterest is a decent way to waste time on the internet

Fark_Guy_Rob: No Such Agency: Baryogenesis:
It seems more like bystander effect. They're waiting for enough other people to make G+ worthwhile, but that's what everyone is doing so no one actually makes the move.

Well, also, there really is little point in being an early adopter of a social network that none of your friends use. Facebook got an early boost by being a university student thing, and that really built a solid base to expand on.

A viral campaign might help too. Pick the top 4 or 5 things people really hate about Facebook, and then just get a few YouTube videos of some kid using what looks like FaceBook and saying "dang I really hate all these Farmville requests (or the other things people hate)" and then a caption "Google+: escape the bullshiat". "Sick of the 'timeline'? Google+"

Something along those lines to get the word out that G+ doesn;t have all the nonsense of Facebook.

I am a huge Harold Pinter fan and I never even heard of this until now.

I bet Pederast.com would make a very popular social networking site too.

geek_mars: My wife uses pinterest for baby stuff and recipes. She's made some really good food from recipes she's found. Also, some simple, helpful household tips (like using those giant black paperclips to keep your cel phone charger cord anchored to a table). While I don't use it, myself, I don't see what all the hate is about. It's just a way for folks to share their interests.

So that's where my wife got the idea.

Phil McKraken: Pinterest is 4chan for women.

It's more like Fark for women. At least, that's what my wife thinks.

Pinterest is an anagram for rett penis.

I was going to say something like that, it's what she told me too. (sorry about that)

I mean, what's really the difference between pinterest and FARK except for the greenlighting stuff?

Instead of trolls, there are some interesting spammers, who pin reviews to shiat almost no one needs with their affiliate links and then somehow spam them to the front page and find women who buy the shiat.

Why do I think this is a marketing scheme from hell?

I haven't heard of it until this Fark post, and now links are all over my Facebook page. WTF?

Pornterist ?

Fark the haters. I love Pinterest. Not a bored housewife. I work 60 hours/week and love finding quick little crafts to do to take my mind off my stressful (but awesome) job. Also finding tons of amazing recipes.

I wonder how long it will be before people are lining up to sue Pinterest for facilitating copyright fraud?

Wow, what a thread of old men yelling at clouds.

Here's the timeline of most people in this thread

circa 1990: AOL? Who needs the internet? It's for nerds!
Circa 1995: Netscape? No, sir, I will stick with my AOL/Internet Explorer
Circa 2000: High speed internet? No way, what's there to see that fast? Besides, I'll lose my AOL e-mail
Circa 2003: MySpace? I already have a Geocities page. What's the point?
Circa 2005: Facebook? What's the point, I don't get it. I've already got a MySpace page.
Circa 2006: Twitter? What's that? You post about your breakfast? That'll never go anywhere.
Circa 2012: Pinterest? I don't get it. I have Facebook.
Circa 2013: Spost-it? Doesn't Pinterest do this already? That's for bored office workers.

2012-04-08 06:05:48 PM
tumblr: gay porn, geekiness, teens & young women

pinterest: babies, dresses, housewives & middle-aged suburbia

I'll stick with pervy tumblr over prudish pinterest.

Pinterest needs to DIAF. So tired of seeing it in my Facebook feed. It's mostly dumb, boring female friends who use it. It's the Twilight of social media.

/ Yes, I said it.
// I'm a woman.

I rarely use facebook, but where in your facebook feed do their shiat appear that you can't disappear all of them with just one click?

Because every time I see them, I'm too busy to block it. When I remember that I want to block that crap, suddenly there are no recent ones to use to block. It's pure evil.

It's pure evil.

I know what you mean, there's lots of stuff like that like email from mailing lists that I can't turn off with one click, that I just delete when I am busy, and when I am not busy, I can't find the emails.

I dislike facebook and rarely use it, but it seems on Chrome and Windows for me at least in the upper right corner there is usually a dropdown box letting me hide the one comment or ad or kill that user/company forever.

G+ hasn't (and will never) reach escape velocity. It's like one of those 60's Soviet reproductions of an American towns.

I'm just saying it like it is. Pinterest is for women.

Pinterest is a successful version of moot's attempt at making a SFW 4chan, canv.as

the first guy, the one who said it's 4chan. You're right, take the prize. It's an image board. Everyone else, STFU.

Shut up. It's nothing like 4chan.
It's much more like Tumblr.
It's exactly like tumblr but with pins instead of tags.

It's super overwhelmed with outfits and makeup and other female-y things like that. But, I signed up with a fake name, turned off all the broadcasting rubbish, and it was actually quite handy to keep idea/furniture pics together for when I moved last month. So I suppose it can be useful.

Britney Spear's Speculum: Pinterest is for self-centered housewives

Pinterest is Fark w/ photos instead of headlines. Since housewives used it first, the majority of the articles shared are home-related, but it's evolving as it becomes more popular.

I was wondering what the new tracking cookie was on just about every site I've hit this weekend. I use Ghostery and it's showing that pinterest uses tracking cookies on other sites along with Facebook Connect and Facebook Social Plugins.

I may be wrong, but even though he's not in a contested primary Obama can still accept individual contributions earmarked for the primary campaign. Can he carry over individual primary campaign contributions into the general election fund? If not, does he have to spend individual contributions earmarked for a primary on pre-general election campaign activities?
