(Chicago Trib)   Miami is a good place for Ozzie Guillen because he can pretty much say any stupid thing he wants and no one will pay any attention. Unless, of course, he were to speak of his love for Fidel Castro - but even he's not that stupid, right?   (chicagotribune.com) divider line 29

I don't think that there are enough facepalm pics on the internet for this.

He's just trolling at this stage.

Put him in Utah, and he'd be humming "Dumb dumb dumb".

Everybody knows you don't say anything positive about Castro in Miami.

He enjoys his role as El Trololo, for sure, but to get an apology out of the man is something extraordinary. Someone put some serious fear into him after those comments.

/Also, once the article got into the part about Chavez did it go completely off the rails or am I having a stroke? Seems like the editor fell asleep.

Dead for Tax Reasons: People still listen to what this guy says?

He's the new manager in Miami. Do the math.

So Ozzie, what about "Scarface": just a movie or an accurate portrayal of Cubans?

2012-04-08 08:14:23 AM
I think you missed the bigger picture: looks like there's a management position opening up in Miami.

I think I'm just going to start rooting for the Rays at this point.

Boy, do I not miss stuff like this. Not like Ozzie was contributing to the White Sox chances of winning last year either, dude clearly had stopped giving a crap and was on autopilot, probably knew he had the Marlins job lined up if he wanted it and just tanked the season. Oh, and spent the season whining about his contract while managing like a moron. That too.

Can't wait for Ozney and Oney to start twitter wars with the Miami sportswriters.

Does anyone in Cuba under the age of 75 who's not a pandering Congressman (Mario Diaz-Balart, for example) really give a fark about Castro? The diaspora left 60 years ago and the modern generation are the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

2012-04-08 11:05:20 AM
I'm confused. Is the home run monstrosity to distract fans from the crappy team, or is that the manager's job?

Or are both part of the plan?

Um, yeah, they do. When Castro dies Little Havana will make New Orleans look like a Mormon family reunion.

Just seems like they would have better things to do, like jobs and raising children.

I wonder the same thing. We've been labeling Castro as Chaotic Evil for 60 years because of cold war politics and the Cubans hating us for the way we used Cuba before they became independent. Which to be fair was pretty awful. Citation. (new window) Then we had the whole bay of pigs fiasco. But it's all been so long ago. We've forgiven Japan, Russia, Italy, Germany, hell even England. We deal with China which has arguably worse treatment of it's citizens, with little outcry.

Why is there so much hate here?

2012-04-08 03:34:02 PM
So Ozzie likes Castro, but hates Chavez? Why, because Hugo isn't as dictatorial?

Still love Ozzie, one of the few sports personalities who doesn't use coach speak.

Same reason Haiti has been persona non grata in the Caribbean since their revolution back in 1804. Screwing with the regional hegemon gets you blackballed.

Yep. Evil sumbiatches the U.S were to Cuba:

The US soon installed a second occupation government under the direction of the former leader of the Rough Riders, the newly promoted General Leonard Wood. Wood's main goal was to improve Cuban life. He modernized education, agriculture, government, healthcare, and so forth. Wood also had Havana's harbor deepened, in preparation for a higher volume of trade with the US. At the same time, research by Dr. Walter Reed, begun during the war, located the mosquito that carried yellow fever. Wood followed Reed's advice, and destroyed many of the swamps, marshes, and pools of water where these mosquitoes bred, reducing the frequency of yellow fever cases.

Motherfarkers, those Americans.

Most ppl don't like being occupied by a foreign power. Just saying.

Most ppl don't like being occupied by a foreign power. Just saying.

Mostly. But I'd say Puerto Rico didnt do too badly because of the influence of a rich foreign nation. San Juan today is the most stable and economically viable of any major city in the Carribean. Ask Dominicans and Cubans how that "independence" thing worked out with Trujillo and Castro. Ill take influence over monarchy every day of the week.

I have money in a mutual fund that will explode if Cuba accepts more capitalism into their country. Could this happen before 2020? Please someone say yes.
