Krieghund: oldfarthenry: I think they were looking at the `variety' of food available - not just the overpriced organic hippie sh*t you & your assburger's declare superior.

That's like the pot calling the kettle socially inept.

Seriously, are you upset over your diagnosis much?

Meh - I'm just tired of pontificating blowhards who can't fathom that their centre of the universe isn't THE centre of the universe.

back-bacon and poutine

Yes, that's all Canada has to offer. Don't come visit.

Smitty. It's Toronto. You couldn't find a white face anywhere in that city if you tried. The food at St. Lawrence is excellent, but it's like walking into the cafeteria at the U.N.
White people are the minority.

I've lived in Toronto for most of my life and have always found
the St. Lawrence Market to be way overpriced.
Kensington Market is by far the better place but maybe it's DQd
because it's a neighbourhood. Then again it's called Kensington Market
so who knows. It's gonna be farked soon enough though due to gentrification.

Hate to be critical, but that list is surprisingly North-America-centric for National Geographic. For example, here's a list compiled from traveler recommendations that is a lot more evenly spread across the world:

I would have thought the Market of la Boqueria in Barcelona was sufficiently renowned to make the cut.

Also, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is pretty awesome, although I guess a lot of the shops are not food.

You'll be sad to hear that European Meats closed its doors today, so Kensington drops a notch down. Also, you can get a veal sandwich at the St. Lawrence Market that's to die for, and the little bar/restaurant at the front does a great bacon & eggs.

Veal and eggplant at Mustachio's, hells yeah.....as the people I lunch with likes to call it, "Death by Meat"....and on our way out we pick up a dozen of Portuguese egg custard tarts at Churrasco's.

Good times, good times.....

Toronto is a great place for markets and restaurants. My son and I found a Mexican restaurant between Little Portugal and Little Korea and a Peruvian Restaurant near the Kipling Subway Station. A far better and more interesting city than the one I lived in in the 1950's.

Awww. Did I offend you. I'm sorr...Actually. F*ck you. Feel like I'm paying attention just to you now? Now you can go ahead and act all whiney. Oh. Did I mention. F*ck you?

Well that seemed necessary.

Not particularity, but instead of reading my comment as "St. Lawrence markets got great food, and Toronto is a diverse cultural city where poutine and back bacon are almost extinct" dickless decided I must be insulting whatever flavour or farktard he and his people come from. Typical Torontonian asshole behaviour. So. F*ck him. I'm not that interested in apologizing to anyone that obtuse.

You voted for Ford, didn't you?

No you didn't offend me at all. I had just come from another thread
where you were Klannin' it up and I figured I'd tell you to piss off.
Go f*uck yerself, asshole.

More than half the people currently residing permanently in Toronto were born in another country.

Why the farking fark would you consider that an insult. Seriously, are you racist or are you schizophrenic or something? Connecting the minority of white people to insults is really bizarre.

joninaz: I visited Toronto 3 times last year and the heralded market was never open (when I could go). Just Saturdays, correct?

Sorry, but a good market is open throughout the week. That's the whole point... you should be able to swing through several times a week to pick the freshest foods.

Every had a baguette last more than a day or two? Do you want raw seafood in the fridge for 6 days?

Best market I've enjoyed is the Santa Monica 3rd street market. The climate lends itself to amazing produce, year round.

St. Lawence Market is open other than Sun., Mon. The farmers market in the north building is only Saturdays, like just about any other farmers market...

superdude72: *Any* of the major farmers markets in California is better than the best in New York or Toronto. Why? Because growing conditions for just about any produce you can think of are better in California than in New York or Canada. And the growing season doesn't shut down in the winter.

Of permanent food markets, the Ferry Plaza market in San Francisco is pretty good. But I prefer the Berkeley Farmer's market, which runs a couple days a week. Berkeley Bowl is unmatched anywhere in the USA as organic food co-ops go. Rainbow Grocery in SF, also very good.

List also fails without the State Farmers Market in Raleigh, NC, which has a permanent location and is open 7 days a week. Lots of good, local food.

Lipspinach: I've seen Morrocan Bazaars and places like that on their own NatGeo documentaries that seem way cooler.

Of course some place half a world away where flies buzz around skinned camels heads while shifty-looking men smoke hookahs is going to seem cooler. But how's the quality and variety of the food?

Truth, St Lawrence has some great back bacon sammys, Toronto has probably the best globe-wide authenticity for ma-and-pa style restaurants, for $10, you can eat a great meal from anywhere.

I would have to say that the St Jacob's market trumps St Lawrence though.
