WTF?

We can have lizards as pets, we can have cats as pets, hell, we can have ants as pets. Why cant one have an alligator for comfort and company?

drjekel_mrhyde: Dogs kill more people per year than gators

That can't possibly have anything to do with the fact that there are about a hundred million pet dogs in the US and a couple hundred pet gators.

That definitely sounds dangerous. Who knows what the fark that little kid would dump into the gator's water? He could poison that thing!

Nanny State. It's not like it was a dingo, for cryin' out loud.

"They're friendly pets," he said.

He said when people think of alligators they think of big animals, but that's not always the case.

Just because it hasn't attacked you YET doesn't mean it never will, genius.

And alligators ARE always big animals -- EVENTUALLY.

I know he's small and will eventually get much bigger, but he's really adorable. What a great face he has. Even if he is a killing machine.

I could not care less if the alligator goes after someone who lives in the home with it, my concern is for the people in the neighborhood who could lose their own pet, or child, if this thing got loose.

Of course, as with dogs, EVERY owner is perfectly responsible and would never, ever let something like that happen...until it does, at which time they are OF COURSE labeled "irresponsible pet owners" and should not be held as a reflection of other owners.

Here's to you, Exotic Pet Owner Guy. While everyone else in the country understands the laws of nature, you and you alone are exempt for them. Boa constrictors may strangle small children, but not yours. Alligators may drag Fluffy the cat or Grannie down to the river and drown her, but not yours. So drink up, Exotic Pet Owner Guy. A few beers will improve your judgement.

The poors. Only hang around people who make 100K or more a year and you should be OK.

I feel sorry for the animal itself too. A damn gator doesn't want to live in some hillbilly's house.

Iowa is pretty restrictive when it comes to anything that isn't considered a conventional pet.

Bringing up the child is unfair, they would probably do have legal authority to remove it from the home even if the zombie croc hunter was there taking care of it..

To rephrase the question, should you have the right to possibly have your baby eaten by that python, or your face ripped off by that angry chimp.

I think you should. Just don't biatch when you face prison time after the mailman loses a leg to the alligator.

I worked in a pet store and while we didn't sell reptiles we sold crickets for food. About 75% of the people who came in looking for crickets wore no shirt. The other 25% were female.

Frankly, i also think it's dangerous to have dogs and small kids together.

If I have kids, waiting until they're at least 10 before getting a dog.

I'm surprised they didn't take baby away too.

That thing would make great shoes.

What, you never heard of baby shoes? It puts the baby lotion on the skin or it will get the hose again.

Seriously, though, the talk of dogs killing babies reminded me of a short story I read in high school. Still one of my favorites. The Soul of Caliban (new window)

The dingoes ate my baby. For sale, baby shoes, never worn.

drjekel_mrhyde: Dogs kill more people per year than gators

Which is why the other animal that the police were called out to get was an That's what Authorities were at the house in the 3300 block of Bowdoin Street on an unrelated call refers to. The ARL tries not to put animals down, unlike the Humane society and PETA backed orgs.

Also keep in mind that alligators are prohibited by city ordinance (I have no idea why).

Link (new window) will shed a little more light on the situation.
