A Fish Called Wanda is a masterpiece of writing.

2012-04-07 10:52:14 AM
When #1 is "40-Year-Old Virgin," I quit reading.

TwistedIvory: When #1

Alphabetical lists do not work that way.

Thank you Morbo, but when it's the first thing I see it does indeed work that way. It may not have been the number one funniest movie of all time according to the author, but it was the first movie on the list (which is generally where one starts reading). Considering that I watched that movie and found it decidedly lacking, its presence indicates a strong disparity between the author's taste and my own and therefore casts doubt on the relevance of the rest of the list.

Zoolander? Seriously?

/possibly the worst movie I ever tried to watch

2012-04-07 11:47:58 AM
I lost faith at Bring It On and Bowfinger.

2012-04-07 11:52:52 AM
Still Crazy, and The Commitments belong on that list.

2012-04-07 11:54:28 AM
And so does What's Up Doc?, and It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

Bringing Up Baby too.

TwistedIvory: When #1 is "40-Year-Old Virgin," I quit reading.

It's sorted by alpha-numeric. You would have done the same if Zoolander was first?

Zoolander was also pretty horrible. If that had been the first movie I'd seen on the list, then yes, as noted I would've had the same reaction.

I like The Meaning of Life too. Not their best work but some seriously funny moments.

2012-04-07 02:15:58 PM

9 to 5
Airplane
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Billy Madison
Bowfinger
Bring It On
A Christmas Story
Caddyshack
Coming to America
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Fletch
Ghostbusters
Groundhog Day
National Lampoon's Vacation
Old School
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
The Princess Bride
There's Something About Mary

Could someone verify that Bring it On is not a complete waste of time?

2012-04-07 02:27:40 PM
Why doesn't the author like all the movies I like?

2012-04-07 02:42:06 PM
Also known as the Helen Keller list of great comedies.

2012-04-07 02:49:33 PM
Total Fail without Animal House.

2012-04-07 02:50:54 PM
No Yellowbeard? This list sucks ass, submitter is dumb and your mother is a whore

2012-04-07 02:51:20 PM
Oops... AH is listed as "National Lampoon's..."

My fail.

2012-04-07 02:52:37 PM
Yeah, a lot of those aren't funny -- even some of the good films on that list aren't very funny.

In addition to mentions by others, there's no Top Secret or Real Genius, Kilmer's best two films. I got bored before I thought of any other funny ones to check for.

2012-04-07 02:52:42 PM
A mostly solid list, as far as lists go. Some omissions, some WTF inclusions, but mostly OK.

No 'dirty rotten scoundrels?'
I know, Steve Martin already has a ton of movies on that list, but I love 'my blue heaven.'

2012-04-07 02:53:32 PM

Peter von Nostrand: Why doesn't the author like all the movies I like?

And

he likes some movies I don't. He's clearly severely retarded.

His Girl Friday is listed, so all is right in the world.

Walter Burns: [on the phone] Well Butch, where are you?... Well, what are you doing there? Haven't you even started?... Listen, it's a matter of life and death!... Well, you can't stop for a dame now! I don't care if you've been after her for six years. Butch - our whole lives are at stake! Are you going to let a woman come between us after all we've been through?... Butch, I'd put my arm in fire for you, up to here. Now you can't double-cross me... Put her on, I'll talk to her.
[talking to the woman]
Walter Burns: Oh, good evening madam. Now listen, you ten-cent glamour girl. You can't keep Butch away from his duty!... What's that?... You say that again, I'll come over there and kick you in the teeth!... Say, what kind of language is that? Now look here you. -
[makes a noise like a horse, hangs up]
Walter Burns: She hung up! What did I say?

2012-04-07 02:55:19 PM
Since the list had "Dr. Strangelove", "Waiting For Guffman" and "Life of Brian", I'm not going to complain.

2012-04-07 02:57:18 PM
Big ups for Slapshot and Used Cars. Let it Ride belonged on that list.
Tootsie? Really?

2012-04-07 02:58:25 PM
Well I have seen all but three. I guess I am almost ready to die.

2012-04-07 02:59:33 PM
I almost submitted this myself, but with a joke. I guess I could have gone for the easy green.

Anyway, what the hell is Pulp Fiction doing on there?

Noticeably absent: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966)

If After Hours had been directed by anyone but Scorsese, no-one would be talking about it. I've tried watching it twice and still don't get the appeal.

2012-04-07 03:06:02 PM
List fails with Borat.

2012-04-07 03:06:38 PM
Not a bad list overall but it fails in one big area: did not include the best of the Chris Guest movies. "A Mighty Wind" FTW

// "It's blowing peace and freedom, it's blowing you and me"

2012-04-07 03:09:27 PM
We're No Angels (Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray)

The Philadelphia Story (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart and Ruth Hussey)

2012-04-07 03:13:06 PM
I have seen every single movie on this list. Neat.

farkeruk: If After Hours had been directed by anyone but Scorsese, no-one would be talking about it. I've tried watching it twice and still don't get the appeal.

I respectfully disagree. "After Hours" is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It's just pure farce/chaos, with everything getting worse and worse until finally it's the next morning. It's just about a guy who's trying to get home!

Damn right you put Ghostbusters on that list, beehatch. Now make me a sammich.

2012-04-07 03:22:22 PM
This is a good list. Yes, like everyone else, my list of 100 would not be exactly the same as this one (mine would include Sixteen Candles instead of Ferris Bueller, and Role Models instead of Wet Hot, for example), but pretty much every movie listed is worthy of consideration. And I like that, unlike so many other lists, it pays pretty good attention to the older classics.

2012-04-07 03:22:50 PM
I would of added Ruthless People.

2012-04-07 03:23:05 PM
Top 100? Way to commit there, champ. After the first ten it seemed like he was just naming random movies from Netflix.

This so much. Only time I ever seriously wanted to walk out of the theater. Probably should've anyway, got the tickets free since I worked at that theater at the time.

You didn't laugh during Pulp Fiction?
It says "Funniest movies" not comedies.

2012-04-07 03:29:43 PM
No Top Secret.
Also, The Party Animal.

I'd call it a dark comedy.

"I just shot Marvin in the face."

"I gotta stab her three times?"
"No you don't gotta farking stab her three times."

"The day I bring an ODing biatch to your hourse, I'll give her the shot"

"Are you on a cell phone? I don't know you. Prank caller, prank caller!"

"Did you notice a sign outside that says 'dead n-word storage'?"

"Normally both your asses would be dead as farking fried chicken but you happen to pull this shiat while I'm in a transitional period"

"...n-word fell through that. Since then he's developed a speech impediment"
"That's a damned shame"

"If Butch goes to Indochina, I want a n-word hiding in a bowl of rice ready to put a cap in his ass."

"So pretty please with sugar on top, clean the farking car."

....and so on. I don't know if you'd find it in the official comedy section but it's funnier than a lot of comedies.

Half Baked

The most glaring omission IMO. One of the funniest movies ever made.
