Gotye? Really?

I keep waiting for the one band so benign that it forces the lawyers and media to say "Fark it. We know it wasn't the music. He/She was just insane."

The murderous teenagers of my youth would have kicked today's modern teenagers in the ass for listening to that pansy crap before killing.

Dunno. If I had to listen to easy listening stuff like Gotye for long I'd get pretty murderous.

I hope he highlighted the bit about friends collecting records because I'm sure this kid remembered records.

No shiat, at least Marilyn Manson, Ozzy, Slayer etc. scared parents. Hell, I remember way way back in the day, as a little kid, my dad making me watch some Christian TV network's special program on the evils of rock music. They even claimed that AC/DC and KISS were Satan worshippers, corrupting the youth. Now we're reduced to some emo twat who even mother farking Morrissey would tell to lighten the fark up, then biatch slap him.

Which is weird, because these days, people have more reason to be angry and angsty and pissed off than ever. Certainly moreso than they did in the 90's. Yet the music today is either "Oh look how rich and beautiful I am" Or "Look how rich and tough I am" Or "I'm singing while crying naked in the shower." Oh well, at least we still have the Dropkick Murphys and Bad Religion.

Sonofabiatch - that song is one fark of an ear worm.

2012-04-07 11:34:36 AM
They also blame Blue October because of "Hat Me" which they refer to as macabre. First, I know the guys from Blue October, so I am more than a little familiar with them and that particular song.

That "macabre" song is a man singing to his girlfriend that she should do whatever it takes to get him out of her life and mind because he has too many issues, and all the pain that he has caused her was way too much. If she hates him she'll be able to move on with her life. There is nothing at all macabre about it. It's about depression and a guy that has battled addiction. (The video replaces the relationship with a girlfriend with the relationship with his mother.)

And the opening recording from his mother is, in fact, the singer's real mother. It's a voice mail she left him because he was severely depressed and was on medication. The last time they talked he sounded very bad and she was worried. Obviously a mother checking on their son is "macabre".

Nothing in that song is about suicide or murder.

Now if they want macabre, they should listen to Dirt Room. That one is twisted.

2012-04-07 11:34:46 AM
FTFA "He also posted a line from Blue October's song "Hate Me,"...

Yeah, everytime I hear Blue October I want to go on a murderous rampage too. Wow, whiny ass, crybaby music leads to killin' nowadays, how times have changed.

Would teenagers today even listen to Ozzy? Or is that kind of like when I was in high school back in the 90s, and there were plenty of kids listening to the Doors and Pink Floyd maybe.

2012-04-07 11:51:38 AM
Two things:

1) I have sneaking suspicion he would have committed the murders without Gotye.

2) Kimbra is kinda hot:

Ozzy? That's music that Mommies and Daddies listen to.

That is why the J&J Baby Shampoo slogan is "No more tears."

Not after they learned that parts of The Osbournes were staged. Current youth prefers authenticity

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

My kids play Crazy Train in school band. In a small-town, conservative, fairly religious community. When I was a kid you wouldn't even hear that on the radio.

The whole album really reminds me of Genesis in a way. Like if you could time warp them in their formative years to this day and age, Gotye is the sound I'd expect them to start with.

But that Sting point adds a new dimension to that theory... Replace Gabriel with Sting and...

FTA: "This song made the kid want to kill his ex's new boyfriend. Now listen to it!"

Also, this cover (new window) of the song is pretty decent. If only for the dude in the hat.

As a Peter Gabriel fan, I agree, that Gotye video is certainly... something. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that he will end up a one-hit wonder. Sting-like vocals and weird music videos don't tend to attract that much attention anymore.

/But I liked it.

peter gabriels shoes, stings socks...ok i see your point...

i think he sounds a lot like the guy from Chicago mixed with Michael McDonald and some Spike Jones..yeah maybe some Miles Davis trumpet too..

He looks a bunch like a young Michael j Fox crossed with Bette Davis....

and the woman in there sounds EXACTLY like Barbara Striesand crossed with Katy Perry and Cher and Wynona Ryder and Oprah...

you people have no aural of visual acuity whatsoever...

now if you say "Nickleback sounds like Creed"...I get that...

I didn't think that when I first listened to it, but once that was put to my attention (by my ex who hates Sting, no less) I can't stop hearing it in his voice.

I like the song, think it's poppy/indie and catchy.

and I second the comment about the Gabriel-ishness of the video.
