ph0rk: That must be why it correlates so well with hypertension and poor self rated health, right?

BMI is an easy to use rough guide.

High on the BMI scale? Time to start asking yourself some hard questions. Maybe you are Mr. Universe. Maybe. But I doubt it.

Are there more accurate metrics? Sure. Are there any as easy as "Climb on the scale...now look at this chart."? No.

BMI is pure BS, probably like their treatments.
What if you look like this guy? I bet his BMI is close if not over 35.

Yeah but I bet you wouldn't see that guy biatching about it either. Only fatties have a problem with BMI as a metric. It's meant to be used in conjunction with an "eyeball" test. This guy, would not need to be classified with the BMI since he passes the eyeball test. There are more accurate ways to test for health. BMI is just a quick an easy one to give people an idea of where they should be on average.

Bathia_Mapes: BMIs don't take muscle mass into account either. During his Mr Universe days, a BMI would have said that Arnold Schwarzenegger was overweight based on his muscle mass.

That works both ways. For an older person or anyone else who has lost muscle mass sitting on the couch for a living, the BMI underestimates body fat.The latter sounds like your typical pajama clad Walmart waddler to me.

This Is Awesome. All you ever see is fat nurses in teddy bear smocks. The idea that health promoters are eat is anathema. What happened to hot nurses wearing white as opposed to the gottamned teddy bear and balloon tarpaulins? Disgusting. But I guess since I'm liberal I should excuse this societal blight.

religion, national origin, age, height, weight, or sex is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably

SO....IF they had framed this as an "occupatioanl necessity" (Which would have been the smart thing to do, since you can at least make an argument there....since it works for the likes of NFL cheerleaders) they MIGHT be able to make a showing under Michigan law....

As worded and reported in the article, yes, you are correct. Complete bullshiat, and illegal in michigan.

This. NFL players and bodybuilders might push into overwieght territory, and I know that for myself (fairly muscular and in good but not perfect shape), I am RIGHT on the border between normal and overweight. But 35? Hell naw, there is no one with a BMI of 35 who isn't a fatass.

Nowhere on the form does it ask for BMI.

This means....

1.) This article is probably entirely bull*&#

2.) If it's not entirely b.s. - the people involved in hiring will visually determine if you are a lard ass. All of the arguments about professional bodybuilders and BMI not being perfect are irrelevant. Someone will look at your fat ass and decide if you are a fat ass.

What about people with a BMI under 16?

The severely underweight pose just as many (if not more) health problems than the obese. Those health problems have more potential to cause long-term (or even permanent) damage than the problems encountered by the obese.

Severely underweight people are also much more likely to have mental health issues, substance abuse issues, or other health problems. The low self-esteem and irritability that is present in individuals with anorexia or bulimia will cause more work-related disturbances than that fat bastard that ate all the donuts (again).

Point taken. One rule does eclipse the other. But if you happen to live in Texas, you should probably go elsewhere for your treatment if at all possible. They are literally advertising that they make hiring decisions based primarily on something other than medical qualifications. Hooters could open a hospital and I'm sure it would be entertaining to spend a few days there, but I don't want "Dr." Kandi Sparkz to perform my surgery or be in charge of keeping an eye on my recovery, thanks.

And candidates who truly know about health and have a healthy lifestyle will work there. Hard to hear from a overweight nurse/doctor that you need to lower down your cholesterol when they aren't doing it themselves.

maq0r: And candidates who truly know about health and have a healthy lifestyle will work there. Hard to hear from a overweight nurse/doctor that you need to lower down your cholesterol when they aren't doing it themselves.

True, but that doesn't erase the problem. I don't know that they are actively seeking the best and brightest, throwing a net so wide that they can then screen out high-BMI people and still have highly qualified candidates. All I know is that if the choice comes down to a fat person who knows how the job is done and a skinny person who doesn't know shiat, their policy is to hire the skinny idiot.

So, like I said, avoid this hospital at all costs. They hire their medical staff for reasons other than their skill in their profession. At least they are advertising it so I know where to avoid if I for some reason got trapped in Texas and needed medical attention.

6'3", 220 pounds. According to the interwebs that's a 27.5 and dead center in the 'overweight' category. I eat pretty well, bike 3-4 times a week, walk almost nightly afterwork with my family and play hockey once a week.

And yet it says I'd need to lose 21 pounds to be considered 'healthy.' I honestly don't know what the fark I could possibly do within reason to weigh under 200 pounds. I don't think I even weighed under 200 in college when I had a better metabolism and played one sport or another nonstop throughout the year.

shooosh: Kandy has all the qualifications to do your surgery, you just don't like her name and locale?

I don't like that she got a job in a hospital that screens out potentially more qualified candidates based on BMI. The only thing I don't like about the locale is that this particular hospital with this particular policy happens to be sitting on it.

Is this the thread where fat people try to convince themselves BMI is totally invalid because bodybuilders and football players would be considered overweight/obese with BMI?

BMI is a general tool, it isn't 100% accurate. It is, however, accurate when conducting samples of population and is accurate the majority of the time.

It is inaccurate for bodybuilders and really tall people. But unless you are a professional athlete or bodybuilder, it is pretty accurate. You also can be overweight despite not being overweight (BMI-wise). If you have no muscle mass and lots of fat, you could still fall within the "healthy" weight.

I'll just say this, working with an obese co-worker does suck sometimes, especially when they can't do their job properly because of their obesity and your employer refuses to do anything about it so you end up having to pick up their slack.

notjoevictory: I don't think you can claim that by barring fatties from working at a hospital you are losing talent. Shouldn't any talented health care provider be not fat because of medical reasons?

This is such a weird argument. Healthcare workers are not by necessity living paragons of a healthy lifestyle. A hand surgeon needs good reflexes and an excellent understanding of the muscles, nerves, and tendons of the hand, not washboard abs. An anesthesiologist doesn't need to regulate his carbs to be good at his job. And so on, and so on, and so on...

But thankfully they are advertising that they hire based on something other than medical expertise, so you can go right ahead and get treated there. I'll go some place where they hire based primarily on skill, experience, and demonstrated excellence in their field, if I can manage it.

You're all whining about how pro athletes would have a really high BMI, but none of the folks they're talking about are anything close to athletic. In fact, the article states that these decisions would mostly be determined by the look of the person. I'm pretty sure they're referring to really fat motherfarkers who are just have no business being in a discussion on athletes.

I've seen some mega-fat nurses and the overall impression I get is that no matter how talented they are, if there was an emergency situation that demanded something physical they stood a decent chance of getting themselves into cardiac arrest trying to help.

I'm fat and I am absolutely, totally, 100% behind this. Seriously obese nurses are a bad example and obviously aren't practicing good health habits themselves.

Or a fat person who knows but doesn't really apply the methods vs a skinny person who holds the same degrees and hey, lives a healthy lifestyle.

They are not going to hire the skinny dumb person either, there are other hiring factors, that is, an education. A person who's educated in medical sciences and actually lives up to them is millions times better than one who knows the shiat but doesn't live by it.

Back years ago when I was a workers comp claims adjuster, one of the accounts I handled was a major hospital. Day after day, I'd see claims come in for blown out backs from nurse's aides who were relatively new hires and were 5'1", 300 lbs. or more. I had long talks with my contact person there about just why the hell they were hiring these people as it was obvious they were going to end up injured moving patients and never be back to work as they'd sit at home and do nothing but get fatter and more deconditioned to the point where they could not do physical therapy to get better.

The hospital's HR department finally wised up and stopped hiring such specimens. Then they went one step further five years ago. Baned smoking by employees. Everywhere, even at home. Don't quit, you're fired, and it stuck.

Right ... well, go ahead then. I'm just glad they are freely advertising that they hire for reasons other than job qualifications. If that makes sense to you, I wish you the best of luck. If I'm in a hospital, it will be one that screens applicants based on their relevant skill set, expertise, experience, and work record.

I work for a hospital in Michigan, and about a year or so ago they changed their hiring policies to require a tobacco test as well as a drug test, and will not hire any smokers. Current smokers won't get fired, but they have made the entire hospital campus a non-smoking zone, so you literally have to walk to the street corner to have your smoke break (smoking is not even allowed in the parking lots). Also, they started a "wellness incentive" which requires you AND YOUR SPOUSE to be non-smokers, have an annual physical, and complete a Health Risk Appraisal (which does ask your weight, height, etc as well as your BP, cholesterol, and other lab results) every year, otherwise your insurance premiums are raised to 15% rather than 12%. So, I can see this BMI thing being the next requirement for us.
