And your point? French wines are named after their regions. French wine laws typically apply to a specific region. Thus, Bordeaux wines have one set of rules, while Cotes d'Rhone have another.

The question was, are red wine blends good or bad? I offered up an argument that shows blends can be quite good. In fact, better than varietals. Personally, I hate cabernet savignon. It's too tannic too be enjoyable, even after aging. Merlot (or other grapes) can soften that wall of tannin.

/Note, use a quality German wine for your Berlin Bomber shots, I use Schwarze Katz. You know you've found it, you don't even need to remember the crazy name (who knows what it means), because it is in a cat shaped bottle.

Sure, so long as your soil and climate almost exactly matches Bordeaux or Rhone. Costieres de Nimes, for example, is slightly outside the Rhone area but produces some really good wines in the same style, and it's ok because they've managed to deal with the slight temperature differences. You can't, however, grow good Cabernet, Merlot or Grenache outside of France.

Until the new world wine makers stop trying to copy France and start spending a few hundred years carefully developing grapes that grow well in their climates and soils, there's no point risking buying non-French or Italian wine. Sure, there's the occasional good new world wine, but it's nearly all an awful copy, and there's no way of knowing which the rare ones worth drinking are. Buying AOC or DOC is safe.

Sweet, sweet summer wine as the old song goes.. nancy sinatra and lee hazelwood. A woman hatching her plan to catch her man.

But I do love a good fruit wine myself. Well, technicly speaking, all wine is made from fruit, but I digress. I've made quite a few, blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, dandelion.

As per the topic.. there a lot of very nice, well established styles and brands that are blended as matter of process and style. Its part of making a consistent product for one thing, and on their style demands its be done. Same thing with burbons and whiskeys.

When grown well it can be interesting used as a majority or even on its own, but it can only be grown well in Bordeaux, and Bordeaux wines aren't labelled by grape.


Unfortunately that is not true anymore. Although what is known as a Bordeaux is regulated you have growers creating wines for the international market, and this often means that growers within the Bordeaux classification create Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Roche Mazet makes a really good Merlot that you can get fir less than 7€.

I live with an oenophile and spend many hours with him and his oenophile friends. Not one of them would agree with your assertion that "real wine" can't be a blend. There are seriously crap single varietals, and there are very good blends.

No. Anything blended is stupid and you are stupid for drinking it.


Blends are when a vintner takes different varieties of grapes and mixes them to achieve a desired flavor profile. Many high end red wines are blends. Ever heard of a Bordeaux (or the American version, Meritage)? Those are blends. Even many wines labeled as a single varietal are actually blends with that varietal as the primary component. A Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, can typically include small percentages of Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot or any one of a range of other grapes.

Meritage is awesome, albeit a proprietary name that vinters have to pay to use. Fun fact, it is supposed to sound like "heritage", but people try to French it up.

I like reds, a nice Merlot is good.

Having said that, I can drink a fifth of bourbon and get up at 9am the next day feeling like a champ.
I drink a bottle of red, and the next day it still feels like i've been mauled by jesus at 2pm.

Okay Farkers, here comes the science:

The science of winemaking has advanced so much in the last 50 years, chemical reactions which were a mystery before are just processes to be understood and controlled. In addition, the former Soviet Bloc nations are dumping it by the truckload in a search for hard currency, and many other regions not previously known as wine producers, such as Texas and Australia, are jumping into the game with some very attractive products. A "bad" year is one whch fails to set new records; they don't occur very often.

The net result is a massive glut, and a buyers' market. You can do unbelievably well for $6 or so, and it is not even necessary to spend that much if you are willing to sniff around, experiment with oddball brands no one has ever heard of.

I would not even go the extra price for expensive wines, the quality gain does not justify the added cost.

But real draft beer from Kloisterbrauerei Andechs, in the original oaken keg? THAT is another matter!

There are some teriffic purposedly made blends of cab/syrah, cab/merlot, shiraz/petite verdot-first off know your wine,maker and importer. There's some swill out there but I have some fantastically amazing blends- course I spend money for good wine- not crap

One of the best blends out there. About $28 at Costco. "Papillon" is more expensive, but along the same lines. The Prisoner is medium-bodied, Papillon is more full-bodied. Orin Swift is a genius.

But Cupcake Red Velvet is a much cheaper "house wine" that's pretty close, just not as consistently good. That's about $8.99 a bottle at Costco.

And anything French with "-Villages" in its name is hard to beat for the price...many good ones for around $10.

Yes...my wife and I like that one too. We tried it looking for this (100% petit sirah), which we had in Blowing Rock, NC, but can't get in Colorado for some reason:

And also, if you want to spend good money on a case, or live in Paso Robles, CA (any vintage, but the older ones are ageing well in the bottle) -- Syrah with 7% Viognier. Dee-lish. Decant the younger vintages and let it breathe for about an hour:

Just like coffee or anything else, you can blend for taste or for price. The results are quite different.

But there are plenty of blends that taste great for the price. And the ones that cost more don't necessarily taste better than the cheaper ones for the average consumer. It takes training...not just practice...to taste the difference between a $125 Napa meritage and a $12 California Rhone.

Um, no, Merlot is not the result of thousands of years of breeding.

It's the result of clonal selection. Vitis vinifera is propagated primarily by cuttings.
