At least non-devs can relate to games. Try explaining business intelligence to, well, anyone. All the excitement of a snowflake database schema, mixed with the thrill of kappa-means cluster analysis.

I was hired as the CTO for what was supposed to be a "ground floor startup Internet company" in west Seattle that turned out to be a collection of machines running in the basement of the dumbest right-wing Dittohead I've ever met, along with what appeared to be a college intern serving as the CIO (read "ensured that the servers stayed running.")

See, he was pitching a business selling hunting & fishing licenses on the Internet, and his entire business ran on an iMac and a couple of old Windows servers. He wanted to get into the big leagues, and so I was to develop a Windows DNA-based modular solution he could roll out quickly. I did the design bit, worked up the docs, and watched him immediately try to pitch it, as a full package, for VC money.

As an officer of the company, of course, I had to tell the VCs that this was in the design stages at present and wasn't implemented - I didn't relish the idea of personal liability, and "full disclosure" actually means something to me. When the VCs turned him down, he flipped out. I quit right then and there, in the middle of him fuming about how he was going to "get me and make me pay."

When I worked in SJ, I would show up at work at 10 to 11 am, go to lunch shortly there after, nap and then actually write code from like 4pm in the afternoon to about 11pm at night. If I was really on a tear, it'd be until 2 or 3am in the morning.

I was also dating a technical writer that worked there and we would both "work late", which amounted to taking a break every couple of hours to screw each other in one of the breakout rooms.

Good times.

jjorsett has a decent point considering "big bang theory". You can look further back at "Hackers". Anjelina jolie serves the same purpose as the eye candy on bbt. In addition, in both examples..... everything is dumbed down to the point that the everyman can vaguely understand what is going on, but basic realities are violated. The worst/ best example of this i have found is the csi series, csi:ny in particular. The reality violation has gotten to the point that most law schools recognize a "csi" effect on juries (the need for more evidence than is humanly possible). Now consider that effect on policy makers considering coders. The implications ate terrifying.

The show is called "Whattever we can find in the archives so we can pretend like we have talent."
