The image I had in my head of this statue would be the guy leaning way out over the edge of the railing with his hands stretched out just missing the catch.

This one is good too, I suppose.

Yeah, I was thinking sort of a live-action statue suspended by wires would be cool.

Upon his next relapse, the Rangers will unveil a statue of Josh Hamilton leaning over a rail.

Probably dropped it's keys over a railing and went after them.

I think it's a nice gesture from the Rangers. Not sure what that kid is going to think in 20 years though when he goes back to the Ballpark and sees a statue of his dad.

Out of court settlement. Yes, she took the team to court, but part of the reason the widow and kid are getting so much attention is to avoid the bad publicity of a full blown lawsuit.

This includes this god-awful abomination that should not stand in the same square mile vicinity as Nolan's or Tom's statues.

They put up a statute because he was a firefighter. Firefighter, cop, soldier; he's a hero who gets a statue even if he died in a stupid, unheroic manner totally unrelated to his job.

If he had been some kind of leech on society, like a public school teacher, you can be damn sure there'd be no statue.

Ummm...what? So because a firefighter dies, they get a formal written enactment of legislative authority, or policy about them?

I'm a legislative analyst and it is hard to keep work from creeping into my Farking. I'll be more careful in the future.

They had to settle. For some strange reason fans keep falling over the railings, even though they were to the same code as every stadium in the country. In fact, the railings were higher than what was required.

It's almost as if the higher railings made falling over more likely rather than less likely.

I was expecting one of what he looked like after he landed.

What'll be funny is if the Rangers underperform and miss the Series for a few years. Then they'll have their very own franchise curse that will be attributed to Plummet McGee here.

As stupid as this is, at list pity the kid to have to see his dad die in front of him -- I don't think many of us can comprehend how much that much suck seeing a loved one die right in front of you.

am I going to hell for thinking the same thing at first.

In all seriousness, poor kiddo. This little guy is going to have to remember watching his dad fall over the railing for the rest of his life to get a ball for him. Hope he grows up with no mental issues and has a normal life and avoids Fark.

You have to remember this is the Rangers we are talking about. Up until a few years ago this franchise was already cursed.

The firefighter is from my hometown (Brownwood TX/pop 20000) & when I was visiting one weekend & read the local paper, the statue announcement was the banner headline. I thought this was a trainwreck of an idea in poor taste.

Now that I see the finished product, hats off to the artists that was commissioned for this. The finished piece is beautifully & tastefully done.

And if you walk within 5 feet of the statue, a censor detects you, & the chorus to Tom Petty's "Freefalling" is broadcast though a tiny speaker in the father's mouth.

If you go back it starts playing Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust".

NIce comeback! Unless you really are a legislative analyst, if so, you have my sympathy. Unless you really love your job.

I thought it was a nice thing for the Rangers to do. But yeah, the first thought that went through my mind is "so they are honoring idiots now?". And I even had a tear or two reading the article. Feel for the kid tho.

I live in Dallas, and for the life of me I don't understand the hero worship. I do feel bad for the kid. But his Dad did an idiotic thing. The best lesson for his child would have been to let it go. THAT is how you raise your kids: let them understand that there are things that aren't worth the risk. It's the same thing with many things. You don't hold fireworks in your hand and light them in front of your kids. You dont point a loaded gun. You don't try to outrace the car in front of you just because. Its called restraint. It is part of the bargain you make when you have kids. If you are going to be an idiot, don't ruin a kids life by being his parent.

Wow a lot of butthurt in this thread over something that affects none of you.

Does he deserve a statue? Not for me to decide. But what they did was very tastefully done and looks honestly great. The guy made a bad decision in the whole 1/8th of a second of time he had to react, doesn't mean he deserved his fate, and most importantly he was doing it with his son in mind. And I can't imagine being the kid who watched my father die trying to do something for me.

If you think it's a stupid idea and guy's a retard, eh okay, cool. I think it's an awesome gesture by the Rangers to make that kid's life a little bit less hellish. But that's just me.
