Was at the game yesterday. Few notes.

* Masterson was fantastic yesterday. 2 hits and 10 strikeouts through 8 innings, with one run coming on one bad pitch to arguably the best hitter in the AL.

* Chris Perez was sh*t. He rushed himself back from his oblique injury when it should have been Pestano in for the save, if anyone.

* The hitting, with the exception of Hannahan, Choo and Duncan, was lacking. Santana did a great job getting on base, as he did have three walks on the day, but guys like Kotchman and Kipnis struggled pretty hard yesterday.

* Acta's decision to pinch-run for Duncan while still up 4-1 probably killed us. Not only did it not produce an insurance run, but it took one of the better hitters out of the middle of our order. Once Donald was pinch-run for Hafner after his double, it left us with almost an entire extra game where we had Jason Donald and Aaron Cunningham as a giant hole in the middle of the order.

It was really disappointing yesterday, but the Jays deserved the win. If you blow a 3 run lead with 2 outs to go in the ninth, you frankly deserve to lose, and that's what we did. I think we're still going to be in for a good year, but we're going to need to tweak the roster and maybe get another bat on the bench if we're going to have a realistic shot at making a playoff run this year. We've got the starters to do it, but we need depth. Bad.

Like I said, I think we're gonna be okay. Perez needs to rest and come back 100%, we may need to tweak the batting order a bit and possibly keep looking to add another bat to the bench. Donald and Cunningham (and Perez, defensively) killed it yesterday by leaving this gaping hole in the batting order that you could look at and automatically add up two outs.

At least good seats at Comiskey will be available cheap and easy. I can't wait to try the new food options. I have two weeks off between jobs and will be enjoying as much time at the park as is possible.

After Davis dogged it on his sac bunt in the 13th? 14th?, I thought the Jays were finished. But they hung in there, and holy shiat the bullpen. 10 scoreless innings and some great jam-extraction. I picked an excellent first game to watch on MLB.tv.

Also, I'm so glad they went with an updated retro look for these new unis. They look fantastic and should never be changed again.

Let's Go Blue Jays!

We are definitely short a bat. That Bobby Abreu deal would have been nice. Also, I'm bummed that Grady is back on the DL. He's just never been able to stay healthy.

Also, what a great first appearance for Vizquel as a Jay in his old stomping grounds. He came in as a defensive substitute to set up the five-man infield in a critical situation, then played first base for only the second time in his career for the rest of the game. He looked very odd on first, his glove was almost as big as him.

American Jays fan here. Almost all Jays players and staff are American. The most notable Canadian players in the league right now are Votto and Morneau so I've never understood where nationalism comes in. I just like to watch them play and their fans are great.

My advice is to yap while you can. That team is coming for the division crown, soon. We were watching the first inning of this game yesterday when Bautista was called out on a strike he didn't agree with, he turned and said something to the umpire and catcher and just glared as he walked away. My buddy turns to me and says, 'You can just tell he's gonna destroy the next at bat.' Two innings later and he just crushed a pitch.

If the Jays get a stable rotation with a real ace (Romero's not a true ace, though Morrow still has a chance to be one) they'd be ridiculous. And they're one of the youngest teams in the league and have arguably the majors' best farm system.

And Brett Lawrie!

Oh I've come to realize that I should never have high expectations for the Jays, considering they haven't done shiat all since 1993. When you reside in a division with two of the highest spending teams in baseball and having years of pretty poor management, it's hard to compete on the same level. Now that the Rays have actually seen their player development come to fruition it makes it that much harder.

All that being said, my low expectations don't get in the way of rooting for the Jays and hating the Yankees and Red Sox.

For you young ones, the teams would be:

Detroit Tigers
New York Yankees
Boston Red Sox
Baltimore Orioles
Toronto Blue Jays
Cleveland Indians
Milwaukee Brewers

I remember those days, when both the Tigers and Jays had some good teams in the mid-late 80s and it was actually a pretty good rivalry. I think a lot of the hatred from the Red Wings/Maple Leafs spilled over and helped fuel it.

Umm, if they were managing baseball like a science, they probably wouldn't have gone to Perez in the 9th.

If they managed by science they would have seen that Perez's 2011 ERA was artificially low and that he's not really that good of a pitcher. It's the whole "OMG 36 SAVES!!!!!!" idea that lets him keep his closing job

As a Tigers fan, I thank you both for acknowledging the inevitable. :D

I'm still worried about the length of Prince Fielder's contract, but he looked good yesterday, and it looks like he's already got great chemistry with the rest of the team. And Verlander was...well, Verlander. Eight innings, and he only gave up two hits.

This year should be fun.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The only reason the Twins, White Sox, and Indians will have anything close to reasonable records this year is because they all play eachother so much. KC 2nd in the division, MAYBE a wild card spot.
