A friend of mine was an editor of one of the Chevy Chase Benji-era movies back in the early '80s. According to my friend, Chase was a complete disaster during filming, requiring sometimes eight to ten takes to say a single line of dialog.

Meanwhile, in People Magazine the same month, Chase was featured on a cover story titled "How I Licked Cocaine" - - my editor friend said, "cripes, he did just about everything else with it."

(highly recommended, if only for the parenthetical where Chase tries to blame the huge flop Nothing But Trouble on poor Dan Aykroyd)

This is the only item on which I'll take the writer to task. Chase sounds like a world-class jerk, but are you going to tell me that Aykroyd is blameless for that turdburger?

Seconded.

Even Digital Underground couldn't save that suckfest.

I think Dan Aykroyd directed that. I remember watching it when it was new and being puzzled how all these people who gave us still like Ghostbusters and Fletch and Uncle Buck could create something so godawful bad. It's wasn't funny at all, and it was kind of creepy, not like in a Tim Burton way, more like "I don't feel good about watching this" way.

Yeah I think that's mostly Dan Aykroyd's fault.

Still love Chevy. As for Nothing But Trouble, I was really young when I saw it, so I might be biased. How can you not love those fat junkyard retards and a hatred of accountants.

I heard a recent story about Chevy unloading on a nervous intern who spilled a small amount of Coca-Cola in front of Chase and SNL creator Lorne Michaels. "Why don't you just piss in it?" he snarled.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way about that movie. That movie makes my skin crawl and it makes me a little nauscious, but I can't really figure out why. I know it's gross and all, but it just kind of freaks me out.

The people who have the strongest and most sudden obsession with him seem only to know him from Community.

Just so you guyses know, prior to being dug up as the token old-comic in leiu of Betty White, he had a kind of lucrative career in film some dialogue of which has gone on to become cultural idioms - and prior to even that he was a popular television actor. Asshole or no.

2012-04-06 01:05:34 AM
Nothing But Trouble is terrible, to be sure, but it doesn't hold a candle to Modern Problems, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I don't know the story behind the making of that film, but it has to involve some legendary levels of PCP ingestion on the part of the director and screenwriter, and possibly a legally blind editor. Either way, something tells me a book-length story can be told about whatever happened to make that thing happen.

I grew up on the "Vacation" films and I'd heard some of the stories about him. For some reason, though, I'm only learning about the full extent of this.

I wonder how he treats his fans.

The odd thing is Chevy got old in a real hurry. I know he is actually old now, but somewhere around Funny Farm he seemed to be 70. These days he seems like he's 90. I can't help but think this recent incident might literally be the final nail in the coffin.

2012-04-06 01:09:20 AM
I read "Live from New York," an oral history of SNL, and pretty much everybody who ever worked with Chevy Chase considers him a colossal piece of shiat.

Is there any reason why this is the third or fourth article on Fark about this meglomaniac to show up in the last four days? Is he releasing a movie or something?

It's not enough to be interested in tales of this old comic who we'll never meet,

This sounds so much like political rhetoric. Do you want to see him voted off of Community? Would you like to be part of voting whoever is on as a replacement?

DeaH:Anyone else hoping the Chevy Chase quits, and Harmon replaces Chase with Bill Murray?

Murray would never do it aside from perhaps a cameo, but I'd be a-okay with Chevy quitting or getting fired. They could replace him with Leonard and no one would care.

He's always complaining he doesn't like the show or even sitcoms in general. So why is he on one? Did he spend all his Fletch loot?

Voting? He's barely a character. I can't help but think he was originally hired as a name to attract viewers and advertisers, but really would anyone miss the Pierce character? He was funniest last night as the pillow monster but I doubt that was even him in the costume. He doesn't need replacing, he just needs to vanish.

He plays Pierce nearly perfectly and has a really good chilling voice when he plays evil.

It's just what he's doing now. I've known Chevy Chase was a complete asshole since 1978.

His biggest problem, as Jon Lovitz has pointed out, is that his parents never cut him off. He made it in showbiz without the panic of failure, because he always had money to fall back on.

Checy Chase, like it or not, is the worst example of a living limousine liberal. Worse than Sean Penn. He's never had to earn a goddamn thing. He's the Mitt Romney of comedy. He did bad movies because it didn't matter - he just had to work to file taxes every few years.

Chevy Chase is part of the idle rich. He'll work when he needs to, but he doesn't really care about crafting anything.

My favorite thing I've seen Chase in for a long time was season 2 of Chuck. He was awesome as evil Steve Jobs. I really wish he would do more villainous roles.

If you listen closely they refer to Demi and "tag team" in the same scene...VERY funny and missed by 99% of the population.

"Nothing But Trouble" was bad, but I watched it several (like 5) times because it was freaky/creepy enough to wonder "why did this get made?" And it was stupid/awful enough to also wonder "how did this get made?" But to a stoned college kid it was like watching the retards on COPS. I guessed I watched it mostly for cultural anthropology reasons, like I would watch a dissection of a diseased corpse.

But "Modern Problems" had no redeeming value whatsoever.

If he quits/gets fired, I really do hope they can talk Bill Murray into stepping in for a couple of episodes (not as a member of the group) just as a "fark off, Chevy! You've shiat in your mess-kit again!" The show is so culturally aware, especially with TV, that it would fit perfectly.

This guy:

Star of Human Giant and Children's Hospital, small roles or cameos on Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Reno 911, 30 Rock, Party Down, The League, The Office, Happy Endings, and Modern Family amongst other things, longtime performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade. Also had a small part in the movie, The Other Guys.

I know it looks like I just went through his IMDb (because I did), but I'm a Huebel fan. If you watch a lot of comedy, you've undoubtedly seen him in something even if you don't know the name.

Years ago he got into it with Howard Stern's radio show (at least I think it was Stern - I'm not a fan and don't listen) There were playbacks of his response to the jokes played on him and for a comedian he really has no sense of humour. Sounded like a complete tool.
