I was going to say the refs weren't doing either LA or SJ any favors, then Ryan Clowe poked away my train of thought.

Clowe postgame: "I don't want to talk about it."

cdn2.funnycorner.net

Really dulls the game, more than deciding a division title on a shootout. Would be karma if Phoenix steals the Pacific for Clowe's antics and the Kings pissing away a two-goal lead and momentum earlier. Kings outshot SJ 18-3 one point. Final shot tally: 36-31 LA.

/rooting for the Curse of Marty McSorley.

Oh I definitely agree. Jim Hughson* notwithstanding the CBC is the best around. Here's hoping they can keep HNiC for years to come.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

But c'mon, it's a rivalry. You never want to lose to the other side, no matter what the situation.

I guess so, it'd be nice to win the President's trophy again but in the grand scheme of things it isn't that important.

Rangers definitely agree with you - they did not put the effort into tonight's game. But then Pittsburgh had to be themselves and try to chopblock Derek Stephan. The Penguins better pray they don't have to see the Blueshirts - Torts will send great fire and vengeance down on them.

Britney Spear's Speculum: desertgeek: I'm actually trying to figure out if that was the best case scenario for the Yotes since it went to a shootout. Right now, it's LA and SJ with 94 pts (LA ahead on ROW 34-33) and PHX at 93. A PHX regulation loss @STL Friday will guarantee that the Saturday LA @ SJ game will be for the division title.

If Phoenix wants to clench the division, they have to get 3 points and none of the wins can come from a shoot out. If they get 4 they clench, even if those come from shootouts.

If they beat the Blues in a shootout, they better hope the Sharks win.

I think,

Yea, they win out and they get the division. Problem is that they're 0-3 against the Blues this year. 1-1-1 against the Wild (the win coming in Minnesota).

And has an FYI, IF the Coyotes go 1-0-1 in the last two; they'll want the Sharks to win period. The Coyotes have 1 more ROW and if a Sharks win leads to a ROW tie, head-to-head is the next tiebreaker and the Coyotes own that one too (4-1-1)

9beers: desertgeek: I'm actually trying to figure out if that was the best case scenario for the Yotes

If Phoenix wins out, they win the division and probably face the Wings after they lose to the Blackhawks.

Problem?

YES

It's not hubris - the Penguins, specifically Orpik, in a fairly meaningless game, attempted to take out a Ranger, Stephan, with a vicious slice to the knee. HE got a 5 minute major and game misconduct for it. I doubt it was accidental. Torts went after them. So did goalie Marty Biron.

Be sure to send Clifford or Greene so Clowe can mop the ice with them again.
You've got a few days to teach Drew D. to fight better too...

Clowe was silly and could have gotten 2, but it didn't make a difference in the game and it wasn't vicious or dangerous. If there's a suspension coming it's for Clifford'shiat in the back on Couture, not Clowe's silliness. Fraser came pretty close to a suspension too when he knocked Mitchell out of the game on what was pretty close to a hit to the head from behind.

/Phoenix should lose, making Saturday decide the division.

As do I. Furthermore, I hope the standings in the West stay as they are, except with San Jose in the 8 spot and Phoenix in 7. There's some potentially awesome 1st round match-ups there. All 8 series would at least hold some promise.

I like the first round match ups if they stay as they are.

(1)NYR vs (8)WAS - Rangers have been damn good this year, but they're the only team that Washington has been able to reliably beat in the playoffs.
(2)BOS vs (7)OTT - Division rivals are always a good series in the playoffs.
(3)FLA vs (6)NJD - If the Devils don't sweep this round I will be shocked. The Panthers are awful... but it is nice to see a team with a decade long playoff drought end.
(4)PIT vs (5)PHI- See above about division rivals. Then multiply it by a hojillion. I hate both of these teams so it makes me happy that one of them won't be in the second round and the other one should be plenty beat up. Bonus: Blysma and Laviolette may actually get into a fist fight.

Yes, but the Bruins got shut out by Lehner a few weeks ago (who I'm sure got lit up by plenty of teams, since the entire Calder Cup-winning core jumped up to the show this season).

I doubt it'll even get to 6, but I'm hoping it'll be a high-scoring series. How's Rask coming along? Not that Khudobin didn't show what he's got last night, but coming off the bench in the playoffs is a different beast. Not that I expect Thomas to get pulled, but he (and his groin) is/are, you know... old.

Anderson has average stats and skill but the old adage about goaltenders stealing series is absolutely true. Spezza and Alfredsson are a scary duo. Both can absolutely rip shots top shelf. It'll be interesting to see how much room the Bruins take away from Karlsson when he gets the puck. I assume he'll get a winger in the face immediately when the puck heads towards the point. It's the playoffs, everything is scary and farking awesome at the same time.

I've been saying for weeks now it should be the following:

Regulation or OT win= 3 pts
Shootout win= 2 pts
Shootout loss= 1 pt
Regulation or OT loss= 0

And if we went by those standings, there would still be teams playing for a chance to qualify for the playoffs on Saturday. Link (new window)

I wish they'd drop the shootout altogether. The ROW at least shows you which teams are actually good at winning hockey games. The Pens, for example, have nine points from shootout wins. They wouldn't be where they are in the standings without it.

I think 3 on 3 would be far more gimmicky than a shootout. That's just shinny (sp?), basically.

Imagine this: 10 minutes of 4 on 4 OT, switch ends of the rink after 5 minutes and you're playing to get 3 points instead of 2 in a shootout. This time of the year, that could prove to be very dramatic.

I just picture it as like a tennis match. It would end up being a 2 on 1 break going one way immediately followed by a 2 on 1 break going the other way. Goalies would have to hold on to the puck more just to slow things down and drag things out. It would become tedious to watch for the fans eventually.

At least with a shootout, there's a finality to it.

Not following you at all. Obviously it would be more wide open and back and forth which is the formula for exciting hockey. That's exactly the reason for changing OT to 4 on 4 so many years ago.

Hey, I have a crazy idea... How about, instead of playing 3 on 3, we just make OT 10 minutes, and if nobody scores, we call it a TIE? Each team could get 1 point to show that they were evenly matched that day.

I do not believe that is possible with math and such.

notadamnduck: "The Pens, for example, have nine points from shootout wins."

No. They do not.

Sure they do. They're 41-25 in regulation/OT. That leaves 13 games that went to the shootout. They won 9 of those, netting them 9 extra points. If the shootout didn't exist, they would be the #6 team in the league, while Philadelphia would be 3rd, and Vancouver would be 4th.

The Pens are good in the skills competition, but they can't close the deal in an actual hockey game as well as a lot of other teams. I think this will come to fruition in the playoffs, where there is no shootout for them to exploit.

2012-04-06 01:25:23 PM

RsquaredW: I do not believe that is possible with math and such.

It is, if you consider one point being awarded for reaching OT, and one extra being awarded for winning the shootout. And such. Regardless, the point stands. The shootout impacts the standings meaningfully, while misrepresenting a team's ability to win hockey games.

2012-04-06 01:32:24 PM

2wolves: I could live with that.

I'd even be OK with this (though I know it would be too much of a departure from the current system for some to handle):

Reg win = 6 points
OT win = 4 points
Tie = 3 points
OT loss = 2 points
Reg loss = 0 points

This way, no game is weighted higher in the standings than any other (unlike now, where regulation games are worth 2 points, but OT and shootout games are worth 3), and effort is awarded accordingly. The point standings would look funny for a few seasons, but we'd get over it. The system we have now attempts to preserve the tradition of "2 points for a win", but does so dishonestly, as there are many more points available overall than there used to be.
