I gotta admit its pretty funny, but why didn't they just make him stand off to the side and not be in the picture at all?

Oh yeah. FTFA:"While the photographer, David Claussen, would not agree to go on camera, he told WPLG that he never meant to cause such controversy and that he was only following orders"

"We were only following orders" will be carved into the gravestone of humanity, right alongside "This is being done for your protection"

Why waste tax payer money by retaking the picture when the kid can just wear that mask for the rest of his life?

I've learned in therapy, you can't change the world, you have to change yourself.

doesn't matter what it is, or how it's handled, black people will find a reason to biatch.

The common sense thing would be to have the kid standing out of the picture on the side waiting to go back to class. Of course had anyone done that, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be at the school the next day biatching how a white school excluded a black kid.

I think the best solution would be slightly blurring his face. You wouldn't notice until you tried to focus on him.

I thought that signing the form allowing the school to educate the kids encompassed the school picture. At least, that's how it worked in my school. I'm a little lost seeing any pragmatism is asking parental permission on school photos.

In my HS Year book, the underclasspeople (is that a word now?) that couldn't be identified, would be captioned with bogus names. Like "Ben Dover, Frank N. Beans, Frank N. Stein," or "Harry Palmer," depending upon your last name.
It's hilarious showing this gem of a tome off to coworkers now, in 2012, and being straight faced about who I went to school with back in the 1970's.

Permission slips.

Because the kid is black and they made the face brown. Not giving him a white face is clearly racist.

CokeBear: We never needed permission slips when I was a kid. They took everyone's picture. The school had to keep them on file in case a kid went missing. Selling them to parents at 400% markup only came later

Now they take the kid's pictures four or five times a year, I'm not shiatting you. Because how else can they sell people pictures unless they harangue the kids until every one of them has their picture taken?

katerbug72: Those are some huge second graders.

They are, aren't they? Maybe it's just the angle of the photo or something.

Wrong, it's "offensive", I wish everyone had your sense of humor though. I LOL'd and thought it was hilarious. The article says otherwise.

THIS.

Wait, you didn't know how class photo accidents have become very common in the 21st century? It's a pretty dangerous event. Definitely need parental permission for it.

Alien Robot: AbbeySomeone: Hey, at least they cared enough to color match him.
If the fees weren't prepaid permission wasn't given, why was he in the photo to begin with?

I don't understand a lot of this. If he didn't pay I thought the standard procedure was for everyone but him to get a copy of the photo but for him to be photographed since he was part of the group. Why are 'permission slips' needed for a group photo anyway? It's a frickin photo. And why are the other students faces blurred in the news photo reproduction of the original? What purpose does that serve?

Because someone somewhere will get the bright idea that they might be able to sue the school for distributing photos of their child without permission, and MIGHT just be able to find a lawyer slimy enough to pursue it.

aybara: I'm still baffled at the need for a permission slip for a group class photo.

Its because images like that get used on web sites and in brochures or whatever and you have to have the parents permission to use the photo for those purposes. They dont want to take the pic and then 6 months later decide to use it and then have to hunt all the parents down and ask them.
