An article that spells a person's name two different ways in the opening two sentences, impressive.

Isn't Owen Wilson the pussy that tried to off himself over Goldie hawn's daughter?

Not sure about that, but he is The Butterscotch Stallion (new window)

I have no idea why, but I think is one of the most amusing nicknames ever.

It's a blog, not the Associated Press.

You can tweet Bryan (new window) about his omitted "o" if you want.

I hope I'm not the only one who finds This American Life to be one of the worst shows on NPR. Worse than Diane Rehm to listen to, and Diane's broadcasts are always at least topical and interesting.

There are rare instances where his show is interesting - but then I still have to listen to his voice, which is the equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard.

The Story with Dick Gordon also occasionally drives me up a wall.

This American Life is a shiatty show, and as usual, The Onion is there to demonstrate much better than I ever could how and why it is shiatty.

This American Life is a national treasure, probably the most interesting program broadcast on radio.

I used to randomly link to episodes of This American Life for the edification of other TotalFarkers. Some of my favorites:

#304 - Heretics
#54 - Sinatra
#247 - What is this Thing
#31 - When You Talk about Music
#328 - What I Learned from Television
#36 - Letters
All of the Planet Money episodes

I could keep going and going. I have every episode of TAL stored on my phone and I listen to an episode every day as I take my walk. A lot of what I love about it is the frequency with which it captures some tiny, profound bit of humanity that I'd never even imagined.

I don't understand why people hate Ira's voice. It's maybe not the greatest voice ever but it's not horrible. It's not even close to Diane Rehm's. I know it's not her fault and good on her for continuing to work with her problems but man, is her voice annoying.

And Ira only talks for maybe 5 minutes out of every show.

I was enthralled when I heard that one. I was cleaning and listening to TAL in my iPod. I eventually stopped what I was doing. sat down and just listened.

I also really like 24 Hours at the Golden Apple and the Ghost of Bobby Dunbar.

Owen Wilson needs to finish what he attempted in 2007.

A grating combination of condescension, unnecessary pauses, and adenoids.

I don't really get condescension from him so much as a certain kind of warble-y earnestness.

And the world's worst "L-slur". The man can't even pronounce his own name, FFS. I keep waiting for him to interview Tom Brokaw, but it never happens.

I don't know what it is about NPR, but I think you are not allowed to be on the air there unless you are Jewish or have a speech impediment. Ira hits both criteria, so he is the NPR poster boy. I can understand not bothering to vet talent based on their appearance for radio jobs, but if your business is your voice I would think that someone in charge of programming and/or HR at NPR is either completely inept, or the greatest troll in history. Seriously, listen to NPR for a whole day, and count the major NPR voices with speech impediments. It is astounding.

Back to the topic at hand, I like the concept and content of the show very much. The presentation, however, is soporific. Coma-inducing. It makes Prairie Home Companion look positively coked to the gills. Plus, much like the popular television show Mythbusters, you could present the same material just as effectively in a third of the time. So I understand and agree with both people who say they can't listen to it, as well as people who say they like it.

This American Life and Ira Glass are amongst the best things on radio. Freakonomics is also up there.

Finally, people claiming otherwise are either trolling or the target audience for crap like Jersey Shore.

-1 If you are going to troll, you are going to have to do much, much better than that. There are pros around here, you know.

Does one of the modmins own stock in Boomstick Comics or something? It's worse than Den of Geek, and that's saying something.

Are we going to have to start flagging these articles the way we used to with SuperDeluxe and Scott Wampler articles?

No need to take your frustrations out on me. I'm sure there will be another 2 Fast 2 Furious movie out soon for you to enjoy.
