I give it 24hrs before it's either tagged or defaced in some way.

Hopefully, someone will spray paint, "biatches leave" on it somewhere.

Will they buy it for a dollar?

They should definitely put it in the Comerica Park and Ford Field area

They raised $50,000 for that? Wouldn't that be money better spent on charity or something?

They made a statue of that slow moving cop robot that had a weakness point like the Deathstar thermal exhaust port on the front of his face? Cool, I guess...

I'll be it isn't a week before it ends up in a metal scrapper's yard because some junkies ripped it off the base sold it to them for 25 bucks.

Don't worry the prototype ED-209 will be on guard. They still have not decided if they are going with the shot gun bean bag, shot gun tazer, or 20 mm HEAT rounds for the main weaponry.

One thing that RoboCop got wrong was that the franchise assumed people would stay in Detroit, riding the collapse of society to the bottom. In reality they simply moved away, leaving Detroit as an empty city.

I always wondered the legalities of RoboCop being armed. I mean, he's dead, right? So if you shoot at him, you can't be charged with attempted murder. Plus he can't shoot you in self defense if he's not alive. Any lawyers out there wanna put in their 0.02?

"Hi, question for Ms. Bellamy. In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes that same rib twice in succession yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we, to believe that this is some sort of a, a magic xylophone or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder."

Well, that's one of the questions that he original movie poses: Is he alive or dead? Has he thoughts within his head? Is he merely OCP property or is he still a human being?

But let's assume that he's dead. No, you couldn't be charged with attempted murder if you shoot at him, but you could conceivably be charged with attempted vandalism or destruction of police property (OCP runs the cops).

As for self-defense, as you state, he's not alive so the idea of self-defense isn't applicable - RoboCop can't be charged with anything at all if he shoots back (or hell, even if he shoots first). Would you file charges against a police dog who bites a resisting suspect?

Destruction of official property.

And, I haven't seen the movie in a while but I sort of remember that he was officially "a police officer," so shooting him is probably assault on a law enforcement officer, or some similar offense.

Alternatively, if you are going to have a police force made up of cyborgs, you pass a law making destroying a cyborg a crime with the same penalties as murder. And because he was capable of being destroyed, self defense would probably still apply.

FTFA: "half man half cyborg"

That just doesn't sound right. Doesn't "cyborg" imply a man's body with robot parts already?

If you're half cyborg does that mean you're a quarter robot? On your mother's side?

2012-04-05 01:51:57 PM
I was living in Detroit at the time and it was such a farking scary rodeo even then with all the shooting galleries getting turned into crack houses that the only scene in the whole movie actually of Detroit is the opening helicopter shot of Cobo Arena and the chopper was so far out over the Detroit River it was probably in Canada. The rest of the movie was shot in Pittsburgh. So in all fairness they should put the statue up somewhere in Pittsburgh.

As long as it takes out Michigan's Snyder (R-ALEC) and his entourage, as an accident in homage to the Robocop movies, no issue with that.

For all purposes and intents Detroit almost had OCP and Delta City imposed on them, courtesy of the "emergency mandate" that got ramrodded through by out-of-state interests.

You haven't met many people from Detroit, I take it. Some people from Detroit and Flint think by adding some superficial gesture like this will bring back all that was right with their city. I roll my eyes at most of what Flint does like the putting up iron arches on Saginaw st or the spending thousands of dollars on a light show downtown to convince people that the city isn't a total loss. No word yet on fixing any real problems.

So it has noting to do with the last 50 years before Snyder? Nothing to due with the fact that Detroit had ONE industry that moved out and took its money and employees with it? Really? You want to blame the decades-long collapse on a guy who just got here? (And no I didn't vote for Snyder, but I'm also not an idiot.)

sethstorm: For all purposes and intents Detroit almost had OCP and Delta City imposed on them, courtesy of the "emergency mandate" that got ramrodded through by out-of-state interests.

I see what you did there, but I have to agree with the state this time. With all the corruption that has been eating away at Detroit, the city gov't has shown that they can't be trusted with either power or money. If ever there was a perfect use for "this is why we can't have nice things" this is it. Did you miss out on all those people that hired their friends and family in as "managers" that never even bothered to show up for whatever little work they were supposed to be pretending to do? If it were up to me, every last one of those people would be fired and rendered ineligible for unemployment or re-appointment/re-election.

It's funny, because I've lived here all my life and the first time I learned that Detroit's "south side" is the downtown area was when I was reading about Journey's song "Don't Stop Believing." I've never EVER heard anybody local refer to downtown as "south side". "South side" has always been synonymous with "downriver" You know, kind of like how you take I-75 South right through the middle of the city and in to downriver...

Yeah, I grew up there and still lived there when that song came out. We all laughed at the line "born and raised in South Detroit." The Detroit area has an East Side and a West Side, a downtown, the Pointes, and I suppose the downriver communities. Geographically, the area that would be the South Side is actually called "Downtown". No one ever, EVER said they were from "South Detroit" -- which was my original point, we are in agreement.

I suppose Journey came up with that silliness because Chicago has a well-known South Side that had a reputation for being a very tough neighborhood. Hey, Detroit's just one state over so it must be true there too, right? As far as Robocop goes, I think they used the South Precinct as a purely fictional area, as movies do, possibly so they could use sets and composite shots from just about any city or set and not have to worry about versimilitude.

While you hand it to some out-of-state-controlled governor, whose job is only to carry out political vengeance with a larger amount of corruption? It is awesome to know that you've only made the corruption problem worse.

Snyder is backed by an organization that does that on a whole new level. This organization, ALEC, writes laws and sends them off to the states they control - where these laws are expedited before any opposition can be formed, to the detriment of the rest of the state. I hope you understand what problem there could be for someone to be expediting out-of-state interests by breaking Detroit. It would signal the resumption of employer-led despotism since killed in the 1930's - much like how 1981 signaled the end of worker-business balance.

Now if you have no problem with Omnicorp being played out in Michigan, fine. That's what Snyder is representing, and it's a shame that there's no ED-209 to malfunction on him. The only difference vs the other states, is that Michigan didn't need to invent a budget disaster (Wisconsin, Ohio).
