If you had time to be laying around getting painted and were as fat as those women were back in the 1600s or whenever, then you were rich and had lots of people to exploit in order to get all that food. But now, most people are fat, so most people assume that it is naturally to be obese. And so the thin people, the way people have been for 99% of human history are called gross and sickly. By a bunch of wheezing fat people who call themselves health.

Shocking and grotesque? It looks like the women actually worked out a bit instead of sitting on their asses all day, which is what the milky-white, never-saw-the-sun, priviliged models of the day probably did.

Really they don't look all that different. 2 months on a decent exercise program for most of them. Far from revealing how much "cultural norms" have changed, it simply shows how exercise and physical work are no longer considered unfeminine and off-limits.

And lack of food isn't a problem in the western world anymore, so fat doesn't convey health for childbirth any more.

That said, most would say both the before and after in each picture are well within the range of attractiveness, and that probably would have been the case back then, too.
