Television is a medium for telling stories. When the story is bad, it's bad, whether in moving picture form or on pages.

Justified just happens to have a good story ( season 1 and 3 ) flirting with greatness ( season 2 ).

Writing off all Television programs as trash is as stupid as saying "I hate books."

2012-04-04 12:41:03 PM
The writing is getting kind of sloppy this season. Boyd leaving Quarles with a couple of drug addicted whores and then leaving Dickie and the black dude unrestrained and being guarded by a dude in a wheelchair is just stupid.

9beers: Boyd leaving Quarles with a couple of drug addicted whores

That's what I don't get. Given how valuable Quarles is to you, why would you let him out of your sight? It's just dumb. Boyd isn't dumb. He's not brilliant, but he isn't dumb.

I thought that Loretta was the receiver of the money, but I thought that she wouldn't physically have possession of the money, I thought that Limehouse was holding the money for her.

"There's a big surprise about Boyd. There's a big surprise about Arlo."

I really hope that they are not going the he is my secret son from an affair routine with those two because It would really ruin Justified.

2012-04-04 12:44:49 PM
The article says that for this one, the writer was recovering from dental surgery.

I wish Quaryles had been a little smarter, and not so easily thrown off of his game. As much as I love the actor playing Boyd, I wonder if shoving another villain on top of him ( in addition to the guy that lives in the trailer ) hurt this season. There's only so much room in 38 minutes.

They wouldn't do that ... would they? Not on an emmy award winning show.

would they?

I'm loving this season. It is less one-dimensional than previous seasons with the addition of Limehouse and Quarles. Yes, a lot of plot points stretch credibility, but so does the character of Raylan in general. I love the performances by everyone, top to bottom, and the humor thrown in (re The Wizard of Oz: "And when the curtain is pulled back, it turns out he's kind of pussy.") keeps it entertaining. I don't watch a lot of TV (I almost even own one!), but currently Justified is just behind Breaking Bad on my scale of tube greatness.

It does seem like they've been steering in that direction, but you're absolutely right. It'd be better if the secret reveal is that Raylan isn't gonna be a daddy, because whatsherface was cheating on him the whole time. I really hated her.

Asoka: As much as I love the actor playing Boyd, I wonder if shoving another villain on top of him

Boyd definitely isn't a villain, and I'd argue he isn't even an antagonist. He and Raylan, our putative protagonist, have spent more time working together than against each other. Boyd is an anti-hero.

Trocadero: Will Duffy survive?

Duffy's totally going to live. He's got that rat-like survival talent.

Trocadero: Will Arlo survive?

Arlo is definitely dying.

I guess I shouldn't have given up on this show after the second episode?

Trocadero: Who puts the bullet/meat cleaver in Quarles?

I would expect the finale to include some scalding lye on a wound, as was mentioned in our introduction to Mr. Limehouse.

9beers: The writing is getting kind of sloppy this season. Boyd leaving Quarles with a couple of drug addicted whores and then leaving Dickie and the black dude unrestrained and being guarded by a dude in a wheelchair is just stupid.

Leaving Johnny made sense for the character since Ava was possibly in trouble. For example, when Dickie walked into the bar, Boyd didn't even hesitate to ponder what Dickie had that would bring him to walk into the lion's den. Boyd saw the man who hurt Ava and proceeded to try to kill him. As for the other mistake, I can't explain that one.

Serpoltas: I really hope Win Wynn Duffy makes it out alive.

In one of his interviews, Yost mentioned that he wants the villain for season 4 to come from what's already been established in the show. If they decide to go with that, I believe that Wynn is going to step up to the plate.

I was basically fine with the show until the stupid prison break/organ transplant plotline early in season 3. That was too much stupid to contained.

amindtat: I guess I shouldn't have given up on this show after the second episode?

It was easy to give up on in the beginning. Honestly I think making it 6 or 7 episodes into the season will get you hooked. That's the point where it goes from single-episode storylines to a larger, multiple-character story arc.

GoHomeAndGetYourShinebox: It was easy to give up on in the beginning.

I watched the whole series just over the last couple weekends. As I recall, the plot of the first three episodes basically followed the same basic pattern where something happened and Raylan had to semi-reluctantly shoot someone in the line of duty. They made a big deal about how he never took his gun out unless he was going to shoot someone blah blah.

Like a lot of hourlong dramas, the supporting cast is a lot better and more interesting than the main characters.

I like the 4th episode ("Long in the Tooth") as it starts to flesh out why the shooting went down at the beginning of the pilot. The one thing I like a lot abou the first season is how the little events that go down in the pilot have consequences that are really felt in the second half of that season. However, the season arch really doesn't start picking up pace until the 6th episode or so.

I know a lot of people hate Olyphant, but I've always found him very watchable in whatever he does. But I do think the Boyd-Ava relationship is much more interesting, and more importantly, more romantic, than Raylan-Wynona was.

Pretty much everything happening in this season arises as a consequence of what happened in season 2. It's interesting, just because S2 was so close to being stand-alone.

Poorlytoldjoke: As much as I want this show to be, it's not Deadwood.

What little of "Deadwood" I watched seemed mostly to be very talky. I hate shows that need to use dialogue to carry the entire plot. "Boardwalk Empire" went the same route, but with more tits.

It's funny, because I'm a massive sucker for westerns. And while Sweargen was great to see on camera, because he really delivered a performance, everybody else- it was just people standing around and talking while wearing costumes. It was just so boooooring. You don't need a gunfight or an action sequence every episode, but you also can't carry the entire plot on dialogue scenes.

TV would be a lot more entertaining if there were more writers/producers like Yost. For instance, who else writes in a "whore party" scene? And responds to inquisitive reporters with lines like: "What's wrong with you? You want a shotgun to go off and take off a poor whore's head. You want Arlo to shoot Ava. You're trigger happy. Settle down."

Apparently, we need more folks like Yost in charge, and more writers like Taylor Elmore high on painkillers.

And for all those folks who get sniffy about TV having no redeeming qualities: eat a bowl of dicks. If I wanted redemption, I'd read a book. When I'm watching TV, I want gunfire, bare skin, and flaming explosions.

All in all, I've been loving this season of Justified.

Unless the season finale turfs it (and I highly doubt that'll be the case), you're looking at an amazing 13 episodes of television.

I'd be very surprised if Neal McDonough didn't get an Emmy nomination alongside Walton Goggins.

As for last night's episode:

-The look on Boyd's face when Arlo called him "Raylan"? Damn. DAMN. *That* is acting. Same goes with Boyd approaching Dickie after the latter entered Johnny's bar.

-Neal McDonough has been knocking it out of the park as Quarles. Loved the trailer scene, as well as his later encounter with Duffy. "Are you smoking Oxycontin in my motorcoach?"

-I dug how it seemed that the show was going to go one way (with a bank caper involving massive chaos all across the board), and went in a completely different direction.

-Wynn Duffy is ten different kinds of hilarious. Please, please, PLEASE let him survive this season.

-Raylan's Wizard of Oz comment. Hah!

-Good to see Helen back, even if only in a dementia-induced vision of Arlo's.

-Interesting reveal for Mags' money. It would've been more surprising had the "PREVIOUSLY ON JUSTIFIED" clips not spoiled Loretta's return, but still...

-Oh, Trooper Tom. You should have shot the fiery rail-gun-toting albino psycho Oxycontin-eater when you had the chance.

Finally, the trailer for the season finale said that it would be a "Special Event." Is it too much to hope for a 90-minute or two-hour finale?

9beers: The writing is getting kind of sloppy this season. Boyd leaving Quarles with a couple of drug addicted whores and then leaving Dickie and the black dude unrestrained and being guarded by a dude in a wheelchair is just stupid.

This can kinda be explained away, as I saw someplace else:

"While WE'VE seen Quarles all slick and smarty-smart, BOYD hasn't. In fact, Boyd has only see the 'poor dumb Yankee' Quarles, so he didn't have any qualms about leaving him partially chained."

Take that as you will.

Dog Welder: Bring back Dewey Crowe!

/"Holy shiat! I got four kidneys?"

Heh, the actor's from Australia, so he doesn't get to spend much time filming with the crew, but you KNOW he'll back for Season 4.

Pretty much my answer.

In addition to missing out on crucial info and certain nuances that come into play in Season 3, you'd be missing out on a high quality show.

Margo Martindale OWNS it as Mags in Season 2.

Doogled: I think we can all agree that Tim needs more screen time.

Rachael and Art, too.

YES.

As I've said elsewhere, it's the second best ticket on TV right now, next to Breaking Bad.

If my memory serves me correctly, they had super-extended finales for Sons of Anarchy in the past, didn't they?

If this is a "Special Event" finale, it's not unrealistic to think that it's going to be longer than the average episode.

And aye, I'll definitely take that over the usual 42-minute dose of awesome!
