The First Special Service Force earned the nickname 'Black Devils' because they smeared their faces with boot polish and murdered Nazis in their sleep

I'm pretty sure that's not murder.

Haven't seen the movie. From the out of context scene, that guy seems like kind of a dick. He totally provoked that schlubby brute just to kick his ass and make an example of him

What I like is they didn't have to get all tatted up, dress in black or look like gangsters to be badass. They were.

The guy who gets his ass kicked more than deserved it. Like he said at the beginning - "you have two seconds to apologise". Rocky didn't, and an ass-whupping ensued.

Both men were selected in 1942 for the Plough Project - described as a 'suicide mission'...

Reminds me of a chick I dated once in college - she smelled like something crawled up there and died.

One hell of a group of men. Their sector of the horrid Anzio beachhead was the only quiet place around. The Germans were so terrified of them that they didn't want to do anything to stir them up/piss them off.

The movie is pretty good too, reasonably accurate given the 1960's movie standards. The one line that always gets me, "Haven't you heard a commander saying goodbye to his men before?"

Nope. They hand out medals for that sh*t. I hand out free beers. I love it when WWII guys come into the pub. It's becoming a rarer event these days.

Fair winds and following seas, gentlemen. You have served our species well.

The Joe Glass from the article is featured (much younger) in this documentary (new window) from the 90s it looks like.

It's a three part series on YT & there is also a 4 part one there too. Fascinating just how ordinary these supermen were. Greatest generation indeed.

Hate to burst the subby's bubble, but there're still a few Devil's Brigade guys left up here in Canadaland. One lives in home town and is friends with my dad. He just got back a few weeks ago from some ceremoney in the States where the US military gave him yet another award for some crazy-arsed thing he did.
Mr. Herb Peppard of Truro Nova Scotia. He's been nominated for a Congressional Medal of Honour.

Not very likely. Defeating a colossal evil empire is in rather a different league from losing a war or just chasing a bunch of goatherders into the hills for a few years.

That's not the military's "Medal of Honor". It's a civilian award, the "Congressional Gold Medal". Still a very high award but not the Medal of Honor. In a way it's neater in that the mint designs a medal specifically for the recipient. It will be unique.
