Yes, that sums it up. His face is too long (it would look better on a woman), his mouth is too small, his ears too sticky-outy. They can make him over all they want, and manscape him, and whatever it is they do, but he's not my idea of hot. He looks like Jimmy Stewart in your picture. I like quite a few Jimmy Stewart movies, but he's not my idea of a romantic lead.

RG may be a great actor, I'm not commenting on his acting. Just on the notion that he's the hottest man on the planet.

I'm not sure that was directed at me, but just in case: I wasn't putting men down by my comments on RG's leading-man qualifications. I was giving honest and possibly harsh criticism of his qualifications as a heart-throb, sexiest man ever, etc. That is all. IRL, I have been attracted to men with sticky-out ears, oval faces, lack-of-square-jaw because of the things that are much sexier than 4-hr-workouts on abs: intelligence, kindness, and wit.

Also, if you had all that and spend as much time grooming your hair (head and facial) as RG does, and your body, I'd be thinking, get me out of here. Not hot.

I'm gonna disagree with the "not hot" thing ... and i'm speaking as a guy who's straighter than a slab of Saskatchewan sidewalk ...

The dude's gorgeous.

But he DOES strike me as kinda dumb. I think people overlook it because he's good looking, and was in The Notebook, and is a guy. But if he was a girl, it strikes me he'd be looking up to Katy Perry, and maybe calling her for help with the big words in his scripts.

So your understanding of the studman69 meme is that it applies only to pimple-faced basement dwellers who have never been attracted to women who have non-Hollywood looks? The whole point of that meme is to imply that men who post that an attractive woman is below their standards has probably only dated women below those standards, if they've dated at all.

You're pretty much doing the same thing, but admitting to it. How does this:

"His face is too long (it would look better on a woman), his mouth is too small, his ears too sticky-outy. They can make him over all they want, and manscape him, and whatever it is they do, but he's not my idea of hot...if you had all that and spend as much time grooming your hair (head and facial) as RG does, and your body, I'd be thinking, get me out of here. Not hot."

...differ from your standard "sharp knees" comment?

I'm not saying you have no entitlement to your opinion on what you find attractive in the opposite sex. Hell, I don't get the appeal of probably half the women worshiped on Fark.

But when you go enumerating their shortcomings followed by a statement as snide as "not hot," you're just begging for comparisons to studman69. (Or trolling, perhaps?)

And then to respond so defensively, and with insults to boot, when someone gives you a good-natured ribbing about it, well, suffice to say I had to go check your account creation date, because it's sure seems like you're awfully new around here.

OMG!!!!!! You checked my account creation date. I'm crushed and duly humbled.

There's a difference between a good-natured ribbing and threatening to make an internet meme of someone. My "not hot" reference was actually to the amount of time RG - or any wannabe sexiest man alive - must spend on sculpting his body and arranging his hair. But since you seem to think it politically incorrect to refer to anyone, on any basis, as "not hot," let me just say: IMO, RG is not hot.

Someone here has a pointy chin and is sensitive about it. It ain't me.

Ryan Gosling isn't beautiful (a la Brad Pitt), but he has poise, which is attractive. Cary Grant wasn't drop-dead hot, either, but his mannerisms were so quintessentially male as to be incredibly hot. Same goes for Gosling... He dresses up well. And, holy moly, what I wouldn't give for a night with his bod :)

He's an interesting guy.

After The Notebook, the go to date movie for every guy I know, he didn't go out and hit the clubs. He took a job at a sandwich shop. A guy whose film has gotten more men laid than tequila and he's make reubens in downtown LA.

And then he went out and bought an old beat up house which he restored himself. Not "hired a designer and architect and had it restored", the man learned carpentry, plumbing and some electrical and restored the freaking house.

That reads a little less "interesting guy" and a little more "guy had one good paycheck and needed to live cheaply until the next paying role came along" to me. Having said that, I would do something similar if I hit the lottery and wanted to disappear for a while, like until everyone forgot I have extra money.

From a male point of view, i surmise that his sex appeal derives not from conventional good looks (they are adequate), but from his attitude. He knows how to walk around with a confidence.

He doesn't taint the facade of what people want to see in him. Like in Drive, he barely says two words, and thus he can give the impression that he is a deep thinker, rather than simply dumb as rocks. He's in control of his physical attributes and is able to mute his facial expressions, which makes human nature want to find out more. Its a skill, definitely...

I agree. teeny mouth, huge ears, pointy chin (sharp knees?) - seriously, there are lots of more attractive male actors out there.

It's that New York Method mumble. Women can't resist a guy who sounds like he just swallowed his own dick.

I just watched "Blue Valentine," so count me as another very-straight man that is already on the Ryan Gosling bandwagon. Not coincidentally, I hate Michelle Willams' character so freaking much that I wish 9-11 happened to her house. So desperate for an abusive man that she tries to make her husband into one while pining for her psycho ex and philandering boss.

Also, what's with Ryan Gosling movies ending with a stab-you-in-the-heart scene? Jeez! At least "Blue Valentine" was good, not like the emotional cheapness of "The Notebook."
