Orlando Sentinel changed the headline (wonder what their Fark handle is) The original headline was "Movement afoot to provide homeless people pet food"

I'm surprised they're not serving homeless people as pet food.

2012-04-04 04:17:16 AM
I think the worse part was that they weren't really offering the pet food. They were FORCING them to eat pet food. The people simply could not say no. If they tried to decline the food, social workers pried their jaws open and physically stuffed the pet food down their throats against their will. That's the disturbing part.

It's sad when homeless people, who struggle to provid for themselves, still make better pet owners than a lot of people.

/Animal Cops Miami is farking depressing

I can vaguely remember watching a training video when I worked at a department store, and what stands out is the narrator's explanation of why pet food had to be treated like people food (don't store it near chemicals, etc.) Not to keep from killing pets, but because "during harsh economic times many people buy pet food to feed themselves or their families." It was the uncaring matter-of-factness in the narrators voice that made it stick. Or maybe it was the insinuated threat: "Follow the rules or your ass will be on the street begging for 49¢ to buy yourself a can of Alpo."

Clearly. I mean I couldn't have meant that it's sad a person who can't even provide a home for themselves and likely struggling to find a constant source of food could place feeding a dog nearly as high as feeding themselves, while middle class assholes leave their dogs chained in the yard without food, water or veterinary care until they're walking skeletons.

It isn't sad that one person without means is "good at something." It's sad that people who could so easily provide for animals they've intentionally taken in still just let them waste away right outside their window. Have some relatives that left a purebred Siberian husky chained in their yard without feeding her until, even with all that fur, she looked like a skeleton. When she died, they insisted something was wrong with her to have caused it, despite recognizing that they'd each assumed someone else was feeding her for a minimum of weeks.

More like:

5 hours of skeletal horses and dogs and houses full of hoarded feral cats
5 hours of alligator wrestling
4 hours of Bigfoot
10 hours of the commercial for Too Cute

I won't acknowledge Hillbilly Hand Fishin exists.

Yep, all middle class people are "assholes" with skeletonized animals chained up in their yards That's a true statement!! :)

Um, wow.

I've done a limited study in this area, personally.
Between 50 and 30 years ago I sampled one taste of each of the following:

Dog biscuts - boring, but nice crunchy.
Gravy train dogfood - better than I expected. Could be a survival food.
Tender Vittles Cat treats - I call this Cat Heroin. My cats would do anything for just one nugget. So I thought it might be pretty decent. I took a tiny nibble, was and was lucky not to lose lunch, breakfast, and yesterday's dinner.

Perhaps someone has more recent data. I have currently paid off the mortgage on my home, but had a home that I did not own when I collected my data. The first two data points were when I lived with my parents. I was renting when I collected the third data point. I don't see this as being highly relevant, but just in case, now you have the info.

well, I guess if one is driven to having to eat pet food, canned dog food would be best. Dogs are omnivores so the food would be compatible. Grains and meat.

Better'n no food.

But then, roast dog is better'n no food, too.

Troll, then. Or maybe English as a second language.

The way most people understand that sentence: "... While SOME middle class people are assholes who (neglect and abuse their pets despite being able afford care for them)"

"Middle class" is not the subject of the sentence, "assholes" is, and "middle class" further narrows down the type of asshole I'm referring to, and the rest of the sentence implies I'm only referring to assholes who are middle class (or presumably higher) AND abuse or neglect their pets. I really hope that doesn't add up to millions of people, but if it does, I don't think I'm unhappy or bitter for calling them what they are. Anyone who could abuse an animal, or neglect them long term when they can afford care and there are shelters nearby, is a pretty terrible human.

Saw one little dog that had mange, so its family didn't like it anymore and put it outside. Animal cops people (Miami) couldn't confiscate it because they still had (empty) bowls out for it and a blanket, suggesting it was still a pet and on private property, and they can only take animals like that if they'll otherwise die in 24 hours. So they left notices to take the dog to the vet but nothing happened.

Came back and the family had taken all the bowls and everything inside, leaving this dog trembling and starving on their porch (because it loved them and didn't understand why it should leave its home) just because it was ugly from a treatable condition and they didn't want to take it to the vet.

Things like that remind me of Dug from Up ("I was hiding under the stairs because I love you") and my coonhound, who suffered horrible neglect. She was our neighbor's dog. They kept her indoors and left her alone in a ground floor home during a horrible flood that made it about 3' into the house. No food or water. She got out while we were all cleaning up after (our house is built up a story on cinderblocks so we were just hosing out the basement) and wandered into our yard. You could see over halfway around her spin and almost halfway round each rib. We got her clean water and gave her some of our dog's food. From the animals I've seen on TV, she was genuinely right at the edge of being too starved to pull out of it. First time she caught our door open, she ran in and dove onto our couch like she's always been there. Neighbors let us have her. She still struggles with being scared where she was abused before. I'll walk by her, being goofy and acting like I'm going to lightly bop her on the head with a spoon, and she'll wince and hide. Gets terrified when someone is angry, like when Mom and I argue. Sweetest dog I've ever had--cried my eyes out when I realized Mom and I shouting made the dog cower in the corner, shaking.

At least they're doing something for them. The Jew in NYC has banned donating food based on nutritional value

"CBS reports on the bizarre rule that turns away food, perhaps the most needed item for any shelter, because according to health officials, it's impossible to gauge the items' salt, fiber, and other nutritional stats. "

Link (new window)

Yeah, people who are starving need to worry about calories.

I'm not a socialist by any means, but this stupid asshole should use his own money (of which he'll never spend 1% of) to buy "healthy" food if he's gonna get all uppity. farking moron.

Pupperonies are disgusting. So is that fake bacon treat. Regular old-fashioned dog biscuits are pretty good, I've been known to snack on them myself. Most kibble dog foods aren't too bad. I've not been able to bring myself to taste the canned stuff. It smells yucky.
