When I was in college we had a George Clinton concert on the lawn right next to my dorm. One of the boundaries was literally the wall of the dorm which meant that security checks were pointless because people just passed contraband from the windows. I saw multiple bongs that were 3' tall or more.

As a former student there, I never quite got the appeal of 4/20.

It's pretty cool to see, but I don't think of "the middle of a crowd surrounded by police" as a place to get high.

They sound like the good kind of troll. You can't possibly convince me they didn't realize the obvious implications. And really, you're going to ticket them? That's your idea of a more aggressive enforcement strategy? farking LOL at that. I almost want to drive to Colorado to get one of those tickets so I can frame and display it after pot gets legalized, but I have shiat to do.

Thanks guys. You really are helping.

This. I'll probably head down to an out-of-the-way beach with some friends or something on 4/20, but I don't even like being in public when I'm high. Let alone where I would easily convince myself that the cops were searching the crowd, specifically looking for my ass.

4/20 is close to being on par with St Patty's day, I'm pretty sure it's spread beyond North America at this point. Even the guys who have never smoked will make a corny light hearted 420 joke on 4/20. The Bay seems to always have good bands/groups in the area on that day.

This is proof that a police officers primary duty is to generate revenue. I am willing to bet money that 4/20 is one of the most boring days of the year for law enforcement. More problems happen every Sunday when the local football team loses than on 4/20. Really, what harm is being caused? Too much unity? One last crackdown before we finally vote to legalize?

That's a good question. You know that get paranoid. But let's say the cops stop outside your house while your high, you'll start to panic wondering if they're there for you. It's not something you can control when it hits. Of course, once you see them heading into another house, you think "of course they weren't here for me," but it's just not something you can control when the sh*t suddenly hits the fan. That's the real paranoia, which of course is easily be identified after the fact.

The cops/school can't seem to make up their mind how to deal with 420. Their stance changes every year. This year they're apparently going for the heavy handed approach. I predict an increase in non drug related crimes elsewhere in town and on campus while this useless show of force is going on. There is not a chance in hell the ticket revenue will make up for the cost of this stupidity.

It's always fun to watch, but I don't like being high in public. It'll likely be just as big as ever this year.

CU alum here, attended all 5 4/20 events while I attended classes there. There for the sprinklers during the safer choices campaign, the photos on the web for $50 dollar reward, closing of fields. It was fun. I think of it as a great peaceful protest and like to compare it to the booze fueled riots. I hope it continues to be a day of civil protest.

I also learned to show up late if need be due to class and that responsibilities come first.

Oh and just take joints and blunts!

Stories like this always remind me of the video of about 20 students smoking up underneath a parachute. Then a single campus cop lifts up one of the edges and everyone bolts in a different direction with the cop running around like a cat chasing a laser pointer, and catching nothing. IIRC that was also at the University of Colorado.

I'm curious if these functions would get heavy handed even if Marijuana was legal.
Campus can pretty much already work on preventing Alcohol and Tobacco use on school grounds.

I've been to a few similar events and they have all felt cramped and awkward. It may just be my personality, but I'd prefer a more laid back setting to 'celebrate' 4/20. Camping/hiking is usually pretty nice depending on fickle April weather. Small bonfire gatherings also a plus. Nothing wrong with chilling indoors keeping occupied either.

Ah, thanks for the reminder to stay away from Queen's Park that day. I don't mind people gathering to protest or celebrate or whatever they do, I just don't honestly like the smell of it.

Enh, massive tail gating is common at most state schools and that involves heavy alcohol use. Of course in that scenario the school is also making money off the football game so it gives them more incentive to tolerate it. 10k stoned kids isn't profitable, so they might crack down on that.

At Michigan for Hash Bash it appeared the cops were focused on the non students that came for the protest. There was always a mini crime wave that went along with Hash Bash and some general disruptive activity (anti-war activists throwing stuff at the ROTC building, etc). The campus police would stop you if you had weed, but if you could produce a student ID they let you go with a warning (and sometimes took the weed). No student ID and the cuffs came out.

Also the Irony of this is massive tail gating occurs at CU. In fact, the school is heavily sponsored by the Coors family, of Coors beer fame. Also, FTFA: The concert, from 2 to 6 p.m. across campus at the Coors Events Center.

The school practically is saying, drinking is ok, but toking is not. So wrong, 10,000 people can smoke weed all day and no issues of violence. When the buffs play and 10,000 people drink, there is tons of problems.
