MaudlinMutantMollusk: Note to next editor: people get chafed about rape jokes

When I worked on a college newspaper back in...hmm...not enough fingers and toes to count that far back...we were doing the April Fools Day edition and I made a fake ad about suicide day at our 7 floor Science tower. 8 diving boards, no waiting (ripped off Cheech and Chong big time). The head of students affairs had a cow but luckily for us the printer "cleaned up" our copy (among other things, a bug someone splatted on the layout with writing that said "got him!") and we got it reprinted without the suicide ad for free. The printer really *did* "clean up" a ton of intentional mistakes but never noticed the changed ad (editor changed it to 'car drop' day. Sigh).

I was drunk when I did it and we all thought it was really funny at the time. Sorta like how another shot of tequila seems like a good idea

Come on, that was so beyond satire. No one in their right mind would think that the seven dwarves would possibly rape anyone besides themselves.

Might be because their ice hockey program (their signature team) is being investigated for multiple alleged sexual assaults in the past few months. So when you're already trying to keep your school from being synonymous with rape it's probably best not to randomly pick rape as the centerpiece of your April Fool's edition of the campus newspaper.

Under the spoof banner "The Disney Free Press," one story reported the arrests of "seven frat dwarves" for allegedly drugging and raping a female known as the "fairest of them all."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the plot of 'Fables', or, at least, Snow White's story in 'Fables'?

I recall clearly the horrified look I got from a female friend when laughing at an Australian satirical newspaper's then-vaguely-topical article decrying a trend of "Muslim rapes" in Sydney (there had been a number of incidents of girls being attacked by gangs of middle-eastern youths), calling for "bringing back good-old-Aussie rapes" involving rural back-roads and ute-driving rednecks.

Guys think it's funny, chicks with brains know better. I can see how this ended in a resignation, albeit for purely politically correct purposes.

well, rape IS pretty funny. it's not murder, or robbery, or extortion. just a bit of the old in/out. never hurt anyone...

Went skiiing this winter, was standing in line for the lift and overheard some little kid, 11 or 12 if I had to guess, telling his friends the plan for the evening:

"Ok, we're sleeping over at my house...first, Skyrim, then my parent's are ordering pizza, then we watch that movie, the more Skyrim, then, rape" after which the rest of the kids starting chiming in on how funny rape was, presumably to sound cool to the alpha kid.

He basically stumbled on a thread like this on 4chan, Fark et al and decided it was funny and cool, minimum half of the group didn't even know what the definition of rape is.

Made me sad.

College newspapers attempting satire almost always ends with this, and it's never even funny in the first place. After constantly worrying about offending anyone on campus, they're like kids in a candy shop when April Fools' Day rolls around.

I almost got my university newspaper's editor booted for an article I wrote. That's what they get for letting the satire magazine staff publish our material in a medium people actually read. I thought I had toned it down quite a bit, too.

Years ago the local college paper tried to imitate The Onion for their April first edition. It was not funny. Good comedy (like most things requiring genuine talent) is harder to do than it looks.

Diana's apology said that while the stories were meant as jokes, "simply writing them perpetuated rape culture."

Uh no, to perpetuate rape culture it has to exist. If we lived in a "rape culture" then the story would have won awards and been accepted positively by society. And that's just a joke article. To really have a "rape culture" then actual reports of rapes would be greeted as a positive thing. We are not even remotely close to having any sort of "rape culture"

We are far, far closer to having a "murder culture" than a rape culture.

One out of two people enjoy rape rape and nine out of ten enjoy gang rape. You can't argue with those stats.

If a guy editor had done this and been forced to resign, this sleepy little thread would be exactly like it is now, but also filled to the brim with White Knights trying to out-outrage each other to show how much they aren't like that guy. This is better. We can make our rape jokes in peace.

Of course, what has the school's panties REALLY in a bunch is the "Disney Free Press" banner.

Disney's lawyers will rape you in court until a genuine gang-bang would seem like a day at the spa.

I don't know, if that really WAS the agenda for the evening, I think a few seventh-graders are going to have a new appreciation for prisoner's rights very soon. More likely they think jacking off to rape porn is rape, though.

Is it just modern 'culture' or reall culture culture ? Because we know there're a difference between rape and and rape rape. The outrage scale looks something lke
rape culture
rape culture culture
rape rape culture
rape rape culture culture
I forgot simple culture and culture culture for those asexuals since they obviously aren't interested in rape.
And I better add rape and rape rape because a lot of people like rape but aren't interested in culture.

I think this is just a case of rape culture rape rape culture rape cullture culture rape with a touch of rape. Stop overreacting, people.

Silly newspaper.

A rape joke is only funny when a guy is at the butt end of it.
