An auto maker shows off a fancy concept car, then claims they'll have production models rolling off the line in a few years?

foo monkey: An auto maker shows off a fancy concept car, then claims they'll have production models rolling off the line in a few years?

I'm thinking BMW can pull it off. I know they are looking to partner with another auto maker for economies of scale, but still a pretty strong company.

On a serious note, I'd be more excited if Ford or Chevy rolled out a car that had these stats at $10,000 apiece.

IIRC, the cost for health benefits and pensions costs about $10k/car, so I think it will be a while until we see a $10k car.

So for 100-someodd dollars you can buy something that out performs my Grandma's V6 Camry. But can it haul 4 blue-hairs and their walkers to Reno?

America is not the world, and the Autobahn has large sections without speed limits.

On the way home she puts it in neutral, shuts off the engine, and coasts downhill. Grandma is a hypermiler with little to live for ever since Bob Barker left The Price Is Right.

I'd bet my left nut that if that concept car ever actually hits the road, it'll be more like 40mpg and 10 miles on electric with 0-60 in 8 seconds.

... and you actually regulate your speed in accordance with those?

Plus, that electricity that I use to charge I get from farking unicorn horns.

I keep it close to avoid costly speeding tickets, yeah. Cops must love it when you floor it wherever you go..

2012-04-04 04:56:27 AM
IMHO building "high-performance" hybrids completely misses the point of using hybrid technology. The extra weight of the gasoline drivetrain hinders the performance advantage that electric drive has, and the fuel economy claims are always dubious when they include the all-electric range as padding. What mileage does this thing get after the battery is depleted?

Rambino: ... and you actually regulate your speed in accordance with those?

The vehicle is capable of nearly three times the typical speed limit, why do you need a car that can go four times the typical speed limit? Why buy a vehicle capable of something you will almost certainly never use?

Sounds like you're pretty boring on the road. Also, the entire world doesn't adhere to US speed limits.
