anyone with more than 2 living brain cells knows that a war with Iran would be a very, very bad idea.

Doesn't bode well for Mr. Netanyahu's brain then, does it?

that still doesn't explain why these comments haven't been mentioned more in the US news. I would think that Israels foreign minister saying 'don't go to war with Iran' would be rather important to anyone interested the middle east....

Well, that's OK, because what Israel intends isn't a "war." It's just an attack on a sovereign nation.

Meh. I'd rather redeploy all troops abroad (including Germany, Japan, Philippines, Korea, (all of them)) . Let those guys go at it for a while. F*ck them. Quit pussyfooting around too- glass parking lot for any attack on us. Our military doesn't belong meddling in other countries' business. At least this President has done a good job of extricating corporate interests from our public policy.

Because regarding Israel, the only acceptable political views in the US are mirroring the Likud party. Everything else is considered crazy talk and possibly antisemitic.

We've had at least three threads about similar comments by Israeli officials in the last month. It's not a huge deal since frankly neither nation is of particularly great importance to the US or the world in any real sense, but we have still noticed.

Yeah, Iran's SO CLOSE to having a nuke that can destroy Israel while somehow avoiding getting Iran glassed by every other nuclear power on the planet.

Just like they've been SO CLOSE to having a nuke for...how many decades now?

US troops stationed abroad are in these places because it is in the interests of the United States of America that they are there. The US is not a benevolent world policeman. It is an empire. Call in the troops and lose the empire. Not going to happen in our lifetimes, pilgrim.

Sadly, within every nation there are cowardly treasonous libtards who would try to advance the radical left's anti-war homosexual agenda.

Even Israel, the birthplace of Jesus, is apparently not safe from the reach of these chickenhearted appeasers.

Does anyone remember Eric Shinseki? Of course not. He was a libtard who had somehow infiltrated the ranks and became US Army Chief of Staff. Well, it turned out that his entire career must have been based on affirmative action, because he dared to question the Commander In Chief on the Iraqi front on the War on Terror. (new window). And he was rightly fired for it.

Of course, Fartbama has awarded anti-Americanism by appointing this known traitor to be the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, as if he knows anything about the military.

This idiot is no doubt cut from the same cloth. Maybe if he, you know, actually knew what it's like to live in Israel, where the forces of Satan constantly strive to destroy the Cradle of Christendom, he'd be more reasonable.

2012-04-03 07:25:51 PM
Huh.

Country with checkered past on disproportionate use of force is internally divided at the highest levels of government on the use of force against supposed belligerent power with designs on regional hegemony?

If only that had been the US in 2003...

That's a pretty dumb comment considering nobody in Israel is calling for a war, they're calling for a strike on nuclear reactors just like they did previously with Iraq and Syria. Those strikes also did not lead to war.

One of the most puzzling things about the modern conception of democracy is the ardent demand by misguided -- but no doubt well-meaning -- thinkers that we should uphold the right of stupid and evil people to participate in it.

It's not in Iran's interest to nuke Israel, because Israel will nuke them right back. Don't be fooled by all the talk about the 12th Imam and the apocalypse; if the mullahs really believed that, they'd have kept on fighting Iraq back during the Iran-Iraq War. Instead, they let the UN plan a ceasefire, because they knew they weren't going to win. The leaders of Iran are cold-blooded chickenhawks who care only for their own power.

Do they want a nuke? Sure they do. That way, no one will mess with them. They can advance their plans for regional hegemony, or at least being left alone by outside meddlers. They still remember how the US-backed the Shah.

Now, what may happen is that Iran's nuke might inspire other countries to do so as well. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey are the most likely candidates. This will increase regional instability, especially since Saudi Arabia is terrified of Iran (Egypt probably doesn't care much for Iran either; Turkey's cozy with them for now, but the Ottoman-Safavid rivalry will return one day).

Some have pointed out that North Korea's nuke did not inspire a similar arms race in East Asia, but that's because East Asia has China to act as a regional hegemony. No equivalent to this exists in the Middle East, hence it's more of a risk.

The sad and final truth of all this, is that there's really jack shiat we can do about it.

You are an idiot. The wikipedia article you linked to even proves you are wrong about General Shinseki. He argued that more troops would be needed in postwar Iraq that the figure put forth by Regan and was ignored. He was proved correct. Crawl back under your rock.

Iran has never invaded us. We have overthrown their elected gov't, which led directly to their current "revolutionary" gov't. They did have a war with Iraq, but who are we to biatch about that?

So long as Israel has nukes, Iran will want to make them. Iran will get them, it's just a matter of time and how much covert battle we do in the meantime. Iranian nukes would make for a nice detente between them and Israel.

Israel is a wolf in wolf's clothing that sullies our reputation with the broader middle east. The longer we fight to maintain Israel's hegemony, the more resentment we will breed over there. Let them have their toys and figure it out amongst themselves. We have bigger shiat to deal with and Iran is not crazy enough to attack us. We could turn their entire country into a sheet of glass within a few hours if we felt like it (sparing enough space to pull out their oil afterwards).

2012-04-03 08:06:42 PM
A majority of the world wants Israel to be nuked into a sheet of glass. When it finally happens, the surviving Jews will have to evacuate somewhere. My vote is they come to the United States. I love the Jews ... they're hilarious story tellers and definitely good neighbors. But my question is this: Why would the Jews wait until that happens? Why stand and be nuked? Why not just move now? That shiatty piece of sand they live on now sucks anyway. Just walk away.

Plant a timed nuke in Jerusalem and set it to 3 or 5 years. Ample time to visit, then get the fark out. After that, it's an irradiated wasteland that can't be fought over. What says "Holy Land" better than "no one can go there for the next few millenia?"
