Woah, solid wall of rain just hit here. Can't see anything beyond about 100 yards from our 8th-floor windows.

air_wx: WhyteRaven74: I'm wondering where the actual truck is, that's a trailer, where's what was pulling it?

If you look in the picture below, it appears the storm went by a yard full of trailers. If I had to guess, most of the airborne trailers were probably empty ones from that yard.

And no doubt the doors were open. Making them box kites to a tornado.

State of Disaster was just declared by the mayor of Arlington. Heard Arlington now resembles Detroit except that they still have a working GM plant.

Rehab center? That would suck to be going through detox and have your room obliterated by a tornado.

ATRDCI: SchadenFraud: Because God's on the side of the Texas legislature and they hate Texas children. (Especially the poor ones).

A-farking-men to that; I mean shiat, the whole "Money goes to education thing" the Lotto spiels? The Lotto Committee give the lump sum to the legislature with the intention of it to help education. So where does it go? Why the general fund of course, where education will never see penny! We couldn't be bothered to save the education system from massive cuts with what we litterally called a "Rainy Day fund", why the fark would we give the education sytem money from people who want to give it money?

/sorry, I'll take down my soapbox
//live around Houston; stay safe Dallas-Fort Worth residents

THIS. Texas is every republicans fantasy these last few years. You screw over the old, poor, and young a like . You then give all the power to companies who do nothing but rape and pillage the tax base around here and take every last dime they can yet all they offer are minimum wage slave jobs. Then you dress Perry up in guns and God and you have a tornado of pure moronic attitudes running every aspect of our state. This place is going to hell in a hand basket and nobody who can make an honest difference gives a crap, everybody is on the take.

The Arlington tornado was closer than I'd like to my daughter's school, and there's damage just a few blocks from my father-in-law's house [at the Green Oaks Nursing Home].

I'm in downtown Dallas for work. After the Lancaster tornado had finished and the storm was well to the east of us, the building still decided to call a 'shelter in place' alarm. Go figure.

Thankfully everyone I know is safe though, and the storms are tailing off.

Breaking: Arlington declared disaster by mayor

2012-04-03 04:19:58 PM
The CNN screen showed the "path of the tornado" being projected as where it'd be destroying things... IN 45 MINUTES.

That's a pretty ambitious extrapolation for a tornado. SOME tornadoes have gone on for an hour, but most are in the single-digits of minutes. Why not just project a path of devastation all the way to the East Coast? Or, it could go north, maybe New York. Let's just put the entire eastern half of the country in a red cone of utter destruction.

2012-04-03 04:20:06 PM
I just got back from our tornado shelter area, which was an non-air conditioned hallway.

I laughed entirely too hard at that, damn you.

dallylamma: Weird. I live in Edmonton and not having a basement is pretty rare.

Everyone has a basement here, or at the very least, a concrete foundation that digs 3'-4' feet deep in the ground. I found it weird that people in the southern states didn't always and that in may cases, houses are simply built on a concrete slab. IMHO, having a storm shelter would be a good reason to build a basement. That's why I asked.

Thanks for the answers.

Roja Herring: State of emergency declared in Arlington.

And for the first time in history the commissioners of Major League Baseball and the NFL agree on something.

Treygreen13: ArtosRC: Arlington must have been hit really damn hard.

I hope not. That's where I live. There were 2 tornados in the area and they hit about 5 miles from my childhood home, and 5 miles from my current home. I know the one in Burleson didn't damage the old house, but not sure about the apartment in Arlington. Hopefully two near misses.

It is now officially declared a disaster area, man.

2012-04-03 04:22:21 PM
air_wx: Flab: Why don't all y'alls have basements? I understand that for us, it's to prevent the pipes from freezing in winter, but if I lived in Tornadoland, I'd make sure I had one...

Here in Austin, much of the ground is sold limestone. It's dammed expensive to excavate that. I do think they should require homes to have at least one room reinforced to act a storm shelter. There are kits to convert a closet into an above ground storm shelter for around $10,000 I believe.

If you've got a 2-story, the stairwell is supposed to be the safest place. It may not seem like it but that's what they say. Never been able to verify that, though.

Yikes. I should probably go check to see if everything is still there.

More interesting for me since I don't live there.

No report yet just this from headline "Significant damage reported at Six Flags amusement park in Arlington."

My live feed just went out as they said "South Frisco, hang on" or something similar. My mom is in South Frisco. Just got a text, in her bathtub with laptop and cell phone. Still working. Crazy lady.

But that could be so that curfews can be enforced to prevent looting.

Maybe, overall, the damage isn't all that bad.

They reported a tornado at I20 and south Collins. That could be some serious damage.

It is far too early to say, so I am going to go ahead and hope that only mortgage companies and debt collectors were destroyed.

TheJoe03: kriegfusion: Is this the part where it destroys buildings, people cry and wonder how this could have happened, then they rebuild the same crappy wood and brick buildings in the exact same spot?

So please inform me what area has no chance for natural disasters, oh wise one.

Much of Europe is relatively stable. If you settle away from the coast and mountains and keep your distance to the larger rivers, there is very little chance of natural disasters.

I was in Oak Cliff in Dallas at 1pm, saw 3 tornadoes trying to get home. Storms are forming so fast they can't even keep track of where they are. There is a lot of flooding and debris on the freeways on I20, i30 and hwy 360.

Stay safe, DFW farkers.

sticksandbones: What an arsehole news channel to put a thirty second ad in front of a tornado warning update. What if the last thing I ever saw before I had a 2x4 blasted through me was a promo for farking Shannon Doherty's newest train wreck?

"Right now an F5 is approaching the town of ... please wait to seek cover until after this ad" [[ad plays]] "... Burleson. If you live in Burleson, you should be in your shelter 30 seconds ago. The tornado should be on top of you now."

Thanks guys. I can't buy the product you are advertising if I am dead.

I'm in Carrollton (Old Denton & Frankford) It's rained, gotten dark... gotten light.... sirens going on and off.... heavy rain then light rain then no rain... lightning strike about 100 yds away... hail, windy.

But in 30 minutes it should be sunny and I will be able to do the yard.

Flab: TheJoe03: Are people really bringing up Perry, Bush, gun rights, and politics in general into a thread about a serious tornado hitting a major metro area? How empty are your lives that you need to do that?

Just ignore them. There are always a few in every "tragedy" thread, whether it's a huricane, tsunami, or alien invasion.

Last time I checked this URL I distinctly remember this being FARK and not a disaster relief center or the Red Cross. But, do go ahead and tell everyone in detail exactly how outraged and disgusted you are.

Because people's lives depend on your opinion about this.

I can verify. I can't find it GIS, but there is a photo of a two story where a mom and baby hid in the bathroom under the stairs... they made it and the rest of the house was wiped from the foundation.

2012-04-03 04:29:19 PM
Everytime I see a screenshot from a local news station of a tornado, there is a little weather icon below it that grossly understate the situation. For instance, check out SlothB77's screencap. Those should be red tornadoes of doom, not little meek thunderclouds with some drizzle!

2012-04-03 04:29:52 PM
In many of the southern states the water table is too high. Thus no basements. Basements are nearly unheard of in most of the SE. Sucks.

I'm at the high school trying to get my kid, they just went into lockdown.

A lockdown? Does the tornado have a gun?
First it tried to hijack a plane at the airport and now it's packing heat. This thing is hardcore.

Tornadoes kick ass and take names later. They are extremely badass.

And yet people who live in 1-2 story structures are deathly afraid of earthquakes.

I will personally a natural disaster who's maximum damage is what it causes to collapse over something that can literally pick me up like an angry Titan and hurl me into the next county.

Not having a basement was probably the thing I missed most when I first moved down to Texas. I still miss having a basement, but now it's because I think it would be the only place in the house that would routinely be at a tolerable temperature when you can fry eggs on the sidewalk.
Or I could be wrong. That happens occasionally.

I think last census + extrapolation puts it around 400k.

It would certainly replace Galveston as most horrific natural disaster if everyone died.
