well, i guess i know what airline i'm never flying.

If nothing else it will cut down on the yokels duct-taping a handle to their refrigerator box and calling it a "carry on" to save a luggage fee.

2012-04-03 09:45:13 AM
It should be a dollar for every second it takes you to cram everything in the bin and sit your ass down.

This. Although actually enforcing size restrictions might be a better option.

I'd imagine it'd be rare for a person to take a flight with no need of luggage. So if they charge a carry-on bag fee, why not just raise the damn price of the plane ticket itself?

Why does Allegiant Air hate being in business?

2012-04-03 10:02:10 AM
$35 for a baggage fee, or $35 towards a coat with really large pockets.

2012-04-03 10:13:30 AM
Scum. I hope they go out of business.

Carry-on bags are the new crying child. Just bring a backpack with a book, a bottle of water, and your smartphone.

2012-04-03 11:18:44 AM
Allegiant has extremely cheap base tickets if you get on the flight early on in many cases, and direct no layover flights to popular destinations from underserved airports (I can get direct flights with no layovers from Fort Wayne to Tampa or Orlando for example).

So, from that perspective, one, this probably barely affects anyone in "large" markets where you can get direct flights to most remotely nearby cities on most carriers anyway.

But, if you are tacking on $70 round trip for even the carry-on, it is getting pretty close to where you need to just start shipping your bags ahead of time fed-ex, and it will likely be much cheaper.

foo monkey: Carry-on bags are the new crying child. Just bring a backpack with a book, a bottle of water, and your smartphone.

Well, the issue is, if it was a short trip (1-2 days), most people would just take a carry-on and not check a bag at all (so, no checked bag fee). So, they are trying to now get a fee for that.

As weasel alluded to... I think those "travel trenchcoats" are now going to take off in popularity, until the airlines decide to weight your coats and charge you for that ;)

2012-04-03 11:55:42 AM
What's the problem with this, exactly? It's the market at work. Allegiant has extremely cheap tickets, and they are just doing normal price discrimination. Makes sense to me.

Cythraul: I'd imagine it'd be rare for a person to take a flight with no need of luggage. So if they charge a carry-on bag fee, why not just raise the damn price of the plane ticket itself?

Because the important thing is to have the lowest price when some fat greasy dork types "fLy fROm tULsA to mIaMee" into Google. That's the win. The lowest number. Nothing else matters. Once the fat greasy dork has typed in their CC and hit ENTER, the profit margins start to kick in with fees and surcharges.

It's the American Way. It's why Verizon and AT&T advertise $39.99 cellular plans that pencil out to $54.75 a month.

Sorry Spirit and Allegiant, I officially draw the line at charging for ALL luggage. That's as bad as Ryanair charging a check-in fee, because luggage is an essential part of travel, so it should be a part of the ticket cost. If you can't compete against Southwest and other airlines without playing these pricing games, then you don't deserve to be an airline.

2012-04-03 01:43:49 PM
Their Bare-fare can be lowered, and listed higher on search engines. (kayak, priceline, etc.) It is a smart marketing move.

2012-04-03 01:48:33 PM
Ok thats it, lets charge by gross weight. I am sick of my 380 lb roomie whining about Southwest's "Passenger of Size" policy.

Or maybe they can come up with some kind of weight and volume formula. They should just start selling human shipping containers- yeah I'm gonna need a 5.5' high cube from port of st louis to port of new orleans with insurance.

Does anyone ship their stuff to their destination and then ship it back? Assuming I can do without my vacation clothes for a few extra days, at what point does this pay back?

If they are not charing for checked bags, then these people are my hero.

I am so farking sick and tired of you douchebags who refuse to check a bag only to stuff the overhead compartment with 2, 3 and more peices of luggage. Honeslty, you're scum.

fark you scum.

I wish arilines would get tougher on people with oversized carry ons, or the dick bags who carries everything on and then stuffs it the overheads. god. I hate you.

Or the guy who just puts his luggage in a random bin. So when you get to your seat all the spots around you are filled up with some jackass's luggage from 12 rows back.

That guy can die in a fire.

FTFA: Spokesman Jessica Wheeler confirmed to the website that passengers will be allowed one free personal item, such as a purse or briefcase

Pretty sure this won't cause any arguments at the gate or anything. I've seen women with purses the size of small roller carry ons.

Now if only we could charge fatties more too.

If you visit friends, yes. ship a month ahead as bulk mail. If it is a place you have never been, then hell no. Me? I can pack for a weeklong trip using a back-pack. (Its called DO LAUNDRY. Most hotels will wash for you for free)

They really should be charging you for any luggage you have...period. A ticket should have a flat fee that covers things like the the salary of the pilots and flight attendants, plane lease costs, etc. Next, you get charged by the pound, since the weight directly contributes to fuel burn. The more weight you are bringing with you (bags, yourself, etc) the more you pay, because the fuel burn is going up. Lastly, you tack on an extra fee for checked bags that pays for the baggage handlers, the luggage trucks, etc. Right now the various costs of a ticket are hidden, and they really should be exposed. Charging for a carry-on is exposing the costs.

The worst are women with a carry on, large purse and a long down coat that fills every void in the overhead compartment. I wish they made everyone use the size checking frames and showed zero tolerance.

On a recent trip I had to stuff my half the maximum allowed size carry on & small knapsack at my feet to avoid having it checked while others carried full sized back packs on board.

I am. and I always check my bag. and thankfully I just got enough points for delta to give me early boarding status. finally.

Still I hate the shiatheads who put more than one bag in the overhead, or have a god damn steamer trunk for a carry on. check the god damn bag. check it.

I said it before and I'll say it again, "Carry on luggage will be the downfall of western civilization"

To the fare
And the egregious fees of Allegiant Air.
And to the price gouging
For which it stands
One plane, overloaded, underfueled,
With crying kids and lardbutts for all.

I've always felt that carry ons - aside from purses, briefcases and diaper bags- should be charged and checked luggage not ( under certain weight limit). It has been the incentive to pack everything you can Into the overhead bin, slowing down boarding and exiting.

Just carry a purse. Even if you're a dude. Start charging women $35.00 for their carry-on jumbo purse, and the airline corporate HQ will be firebombed by midday. Allow women to carry purses, but tell dudes they're SOL and you've got a gender discrimination lawsuit on your hands.

Win win.

We have clearly made air travel too affordable. I mean, the riff raff that invades our airports and planes is astounding. They are the reason we have the shiatty plastic utensils or that we don't all get bubbly anymore. Get back to the Greyhound buses and leave me and my civilized friends to enjoy the benefit of air travel without Bubba yelling at the Stewardess for more peanuts or another beer.

Get rid of the gawd damn luggage racks!

if it doesn't fit under your seat you have to check it.

That's the way it is on Delta's regional jets and it takes about 90 seconds to get all 60 people off the plane.

If you toss your carry-on in the bin above 4A and your seat is 27K then there should be a complimentary "drown you in the shiatter after the fratboys returning home from the Guadalajara Chili and Natty Ice Festival are done with it" or, at the very least, your bag should be treated as abandoned and handed over for detonation after all valuables are removed.

I just got back from a 5-day trip which included 6 flights and had everything in a SMALL carry-on (not the kind you have to stuff in the overhead). People just bring too much shiat with them.
