Meh. Valentine is only keeping the seat warm until John Farrell's contract is up. This year is already a waste, since it's an even numbered year for Beckett.

If Red Sox management ever thought they'd want Tito back, they wouldn't have planted the pill-popping stories in the press.

While Schilling often says things that make no sense, I agree here. As long as it is going good Valentine will be fine. A slumping team or any kind of foul up in team chemistry/mechanics and we will see the Groucho-Marx-Stache-Glasses hit the fan.

Josh Becket going to see a hand specialists for his thumb on his throwing hand.
Andrew Bailey going to see a hand specialists for his thumb on his throwing hand.
John Lackey recovering from Tommy John surgery
Daisuke Matsuzaka recovering from Tommy John surgery
Carl Crawford recovering from wrist surgery
Chris Carpenter (not that one, the sucky one) will need elbow surgery due to bone spurs
Bobby Jenks recovering from back surgery (that almost killed him)
Clay Bucholz coming off back surgery.
Kevin Youkills not looking so healthy
Bobby Valentine coaching.

This is going to be a fun year.

So, already, Valentine's getting the Keith Olbermann treatment.

The last three aren't injuries but are notable concerns. It's a Greek tragedy in the making.

jackiepaper: Curt Schilling is a dick anyway.

we saw "red light" / "top step"* curt's true colors when he was called before congress in teh same hearing where mark mcgwire said he was not here to talk about the past, where palmeiro scolded congress, "i have NEVER taken steroids, i don't know how to be more clear than that', and sammy sosa needed an interpreter. curt's act, you may recall, was to say he mmmmmmmmmmay have exagerrated some of the claims he made about steroids in baseball.

*the derogatory name his D-Back teammates gave him, referrign to Curt's odd ability to know where to stand when the red light came on for the dugout tv cameras. once the red light came on, curt scrambled to the top step of the dugout and made sure he was seen cheering on teammates. once the red light was off, he'd go back to the bench.

I like Bobby Valentine as a manager. He's great at getting the most out of what he has. But he has 3 flaws. He has to have the biggest ego on the team, He speaks his mind, to the ire of the upper management, and he riles people up during press conferences (He's very snide, not blustery like Rex Ryan)

2012-04-03 11:36:51 AM
Shilling and Valentine love the limelight. To the exclusion of everything else. Bobby has diverted attention from the obvious problems with the team. Once the season starts he will divert attention from himself and blame everyone else.

On the off chance he can pull off a winning season, I will be grateful. Not likely, but I can hope.

We did replace "Manny being Manny." With "Bobby being Bobby."

"There's way more structure and discipline in Japan (where Valentine last managed) than there is in the United States. It's not even close," Schilling said. "And that to me is a big deal. Over here, one of the reasons (former Red Sox manager) Terry (Francona) was able to do what he did was because he didn't worry about the little stuff steroids."

FTFM, fatboy.

Sorry for you Sox fans. Though a lifelong Reds/Rangers fan, I have always liked the Sox and greatly admired your history and legion of great ballplayers. Like little kids would say, you were my 4th favorite team. Anyway, whoever decided to get rid of Francona & hire Bobby V made a major mistake that will hurt your team. I can see Francona going somewhere else and being very successful while the Sox decline, much as the Reds did when they prematurely fired Sparky.

If Cuban ever gets a team, I hope he hires Valentine just for the entertainment value those 2 would provide.

I would bet that's because nearly everyone who played with him said he was a dick and a bad teammate.
He hid his face in a towel in the dugout like a f*cking coward when Wild Thing blew the WS for the Phillies.

generalDisdain: said he was a dick and a bad teammate.

i havne't heard many people say he was bad but i have heard some former teammates somehwat dodge the question. like when some have been asked, "was curt a leader or was he a distraction?" the answer turns into "no one prepared more than curt, and he had tons of heart". an answer, but not really the answer.

local guys used to have him on every week and it was funny how curt would disown stuff he said. they'd sometimes play his own comments back to him, and then he'd play the "WELL, YOU GUYS NEVER PLAYED THE GAME, AND WHAT GOES ON IN THE LOCKER ROOM STAYS THERE!" card. and it would be like, dude, they just asked you if your comment last week about athlete X was waht you meant, you denied making the comment, they played your comment, now you mad.

/in fairness to curt, my college roommate claimed to have grown up next door to curt in Paradise Valley, i think....they both went to Shadow Mountain. He didn't know curt due to the age gap but said curt was a nice guy. but this was probably in the mid 80s when curt wasn't yet playing pro ball.

*shrug*

I still like Curt, he signed my Red Sox jersey back on 06, and his comments on the WoW podcasts, whenever he's a guest, are entertaining.

It will be an interesting season. I enjoyed Curt when he won, I like him better on the radio or TV. My cousin had nothing bad to say about Damon or Veritek, they played Minor League ball together. Curt is a windbag, but sometimes has good observations. Bobby V. just seems to like the camera and the pen. If I am proven wrong, I will admit it.

Yeah, pretty much. XD

Kinda like Stalin telling Pol Pot how soft he was as a dictator.

You know, I think Bobby V is onto something.

Boston Sports media is evil. They look for shiat, stir the pot, and if they have to, start shiat.

Bellichick handles it by trying to keep the media at arms length, which seems to work. Valentine almost seems to be picking a fight with the media. All the attention is on him. Notice how all the players have had really softball questions this year. Bobby is taking all the heat.

I like it.

You are correct. But like the Boston media, he stirs the pot for the sake of stirring it.

Not to mention Bard is trying to be a starter (doubtful), Miller's trying to relieve (possible?), and Wake won't be there to save the day anymore once we realize how many of the new guys suck. At least the only major question mark is Crawford on offense (though I admit I'm trying to ignore the Youk situation).

2012-04-03 03:28:56 PM
Wake was a horse, starter, reliever, what do you need coach? Jason Varitek as well. But there time came to an end, for the good or the bad. Youk, we shall see. I like the lug. Can Petey still be a fireplug? I hope so. For a guy that never should have made it to the majors, he has done very well. And what about Ells? He is gone first chance he gets. The Soxs treated him badly and he doesn't forget.
