"Dr. Segal (new window), why don't you have a seat over near these developments in the growth of crystalline oxides on the ubiquitous silicon semiconductor platform. The overall goal of this endeavor is the integration of multifunctional complex oxides with advanced semiconductor technology. Oxide epitaxy in materials systems achieved through conventional deposition techniques is described first, followed by a description of the science and technology of using atomic layer-by-layer deposition with molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to systematically construct the oxide-silicon interface. An interdisciplinary approach involving MBE, advanced real-space structural characterization, and first-principles theory has led to a detailed understanding of the process by which the interface between crystalline oxides and silicon forms, the resulting structure of the interface, and the link between structure and functionality. Potential applications in electronics, photonics and raping 12-year olds are also discussed."

FTFA: What he didn't realise was that the woman was in fact an undercover agent and that he was being set up in a Department of Homeland Security sting.

Okay, I can see FBI doing this. Homeland security? I could understand them running stings for terrorist activities/espionage.

Still, good on em. Innocent before guilty, due process and all that jazz.

I'm certainly not defending the guy, but what if he had no intention of having sex with the daughters? What if he was just saying that because he thought it's what the mother wanted to hear, in order to meet up with her? Again, not defending him, but isn't it strange to throw someone in jail for a crime they not only haven't committed, but perhaps had no intention of ever committing?

Anytime you say, "I'm not defending the guy..." you are defending the guy. Anytime you say "I don't want to sound racist.." your being racist.

He's being charged with traveling with the intent of having sex with a minor, not the actual act. It is perfectly reasonable for law enforcement to prevent crimes that criminals had plan to do.

Allegedly he bought vibrators to use on the 12 year old and allegedly put this in E-writing. He allegedly communicated with her several times wanting this sex thing between mom and daughters.

He flew out to Colorado to meet this woman. Had he never bought a ticket, or never got on the airplane. then all they would have was he thought about it, but not do it.

Well... some crimes don't need motive or intent, just to prove a fact: if someone has sex with a person under 12, it's automatically a felony even if the minor showed you a legitimate photo ID that said they were 21, doesn't matter, the state can charge you. The opposite is also true: if you charge someone for having sex with a person under 12 but the person was 14, you fail to meet the statutory requirements and if the case isn't just dismissed you're likely to see an acquittal.

What struck me as odd about the article was: why is a British tabloid running a story about an Israeli, living in Boston, committing sex crimes? I mean, I'm not implying it's a hoax, it's reported elsewhere, it really happened, but it's not really news: Segal's a nobody. He's not a British national, working for a British firm, he doesn't sit on any international councils or even hold a position of particular prominence at MIT.

Is it the titillating Facebook photos? The offer to buy dildos for the kids? And why are 30+ of the 33 comments on the DM site from Americans?

Jebus!

"...sexual act with a person under 12, a count which carries a minimum penalty of 30 years in prison."

If he had actually met a 12 year old girl, and had murdered and cooked and eaten her; he would probably get less time. And it's Federal, not state, so he'll do every farking day of it. That's a lot of time (and money) for a crime that kinda/actually didn't happen.

He bought dildos specifically for the youngest child and took them with him on a flight across the country.

If he had made detailed plans to rob a bank and travelled across the country to that bank with a gun and mask would you still claim he shouldn't be punished?

But don't you think he'd be just as deterred by say, 2 year sentence and a $100,000 fine? Outside of his head -which I grant you is an evil place- the only harm he did was to gross out a cop.

I'm all for keeping children safe, but I'm not convinced that letting the DHS play Chris Hanson is actually doing any good for anyone.

These kind of entrapments are basically a net drain of resources. For every fictional child we save going after retards like this guy, we could probably save a lot of real children and adults being held as sex slaves illegally RIGHT NOW by pursuing other avenues of inquiry.

Or we could devote the same time, money, and skilled personnel to y'know keeping the Homeland Secure. Checking borders, tracking down people named Muhammad who've recently purchased a lot of fertilizer off g-had.com/ammol/discount-code-death-to-america, launching the occasional surprise raid on gangs with military grade firepower in their arsenal, and other stuff that fits in their job description.

Tricking this poor schlub into making the move from creeper to technical pedo and then keeping him in a box for 30 years? That feels like a BIG waste of time and money to me when the people doing it are supposed to be doing other things.

I'm not really sure. These people obviously don't seem to consider risk vs reward the same way most of the rest of us do. He already knew the potential consequences of being caught yet he went ahead anyway, he doesn't strike me as the type who would be deterred by a fine.

I'm just guessing anyway, I have no idea the motivating force behind people like this. Crimes of passion, greed, revenge or opportunity make sense to me. Wanting to sleep with children just doesn't compute.
