Throwing aside the ridiculousness of preseason rankings for a second...is picking the Yankees #1 really that outlandish? I don't think so. Sure they're not the only team that you could make an argument for, but is there anyone who thinks that they're not a contender?

2012-04-02 07:31:07 PM
In ESPN's universe, of course

Yeah, because ESPN is filled with Yankee fans...

2012-04-02 07:59:57 PM
in the universe where not a single game has been played yet, and the yankees have a roster filled with good hitting, acceptable starting pitching, and a lights-out closer?
Seems like this universe to me.
I'm not sure I agree, but I can't think of anyone I'd put over them right now.

2012-04-02 08:05:40 PM
Well, it would be a smart bet, statistically speaking. They've only bought, I mean won, like half of all the championships.

Woo! Snakes are the first of the NL teams listed.

Tigers, Angels, and Rangers are better picks.

Hey subby, shut up, or we'll send over CC Sabathia and Michael Pineda, and they will eat you.

I can only imagine the graph this could produce over the season if Di Atribe ever did it and the mods actually greened it once a week. I think I said the same thing last year and never bothered doing it myself.

With that hitting, I can see it.

" If the Red Sox can avoid another poor start the attention will be on baseball and not all the other stuff"

Ha! Even with their poor start last year the Red Sox were still a playoff team at the beginning of September. It was their horrid ending that killed them. But those in between months were something else because the Sox were one of the best teams. They were leading the division!

Besides, the Yankees always always start off slow then pour it on as the season passes. The Red Sox just need to be consistent.

I agree somewhat...We have key injuries and the bats have been looking very slow this Spring.

meanmutton: Tigers, Angels, and Rangers are better picks.

Rangers maybe, presuming the Feliz experiment in the rotation pans out, and Hamilton stays healthy.
Angels? Meh. They got Pujols, but I still wouldn't put them in the same class as the Yankees hitting wise. Not while they still have Vernon Wells and Bobby Abreu on their roster and Mike Trout wasting away in the minors.
Tigers? Well they have Verlander, so plus for them. But I have a feeling that infield is going to be a sieve at the corners.

And this is coming from a Phillies fan, not a Yanks fan.
Phillies have a great rotation, but that infield is problematic at best, with Rollins the only healthy guy worth having in the lineup on a day to day basis. The outfield is 2/3 good, with Victorino and Pence, but who knows what they're going to do in left. Brown they might as well trade, because I don't think he'll ever be good for them. He needs a change of scenery. Juan Pierre... no thanks. And Mayberry... meh.
At least Ruiz is a pretty decent catcher, and they lucked out in not re-signing Madson in the bullpen. Not that I like that contract for Papelbon.

ESPN is based in Bristol, Connecticut. And I know they like to pretend to be neutral, but it shows. It's not even just an east coast thing; the Phillies don't get much attention either, for instance, just Boston and New York.

/Sox fan, though, so I don't mind the extra attention.

Oh, it is ON!

I think Adam Jones and Matt Wieters by themselves make Baltimore better. Remember last year? The Astros are even worse now.

Detriot is ranked way to high. They will win divison but with a 84-85 win year

2012-04-02 10:38:53 PM
Lazy journalism...the Padres blurb is this: Edinson Volquez will make the Opening Day start for the Padres. He was the Reds' Opening Day starter last season. -- ESPN.com

I can understand a sentence to sum up a team but seriously, that's all they can put? They can't talk about the offseason trade of Latos, bringing in Street to replace Bell, or any other things that they've done in the offseason? I'm not a Padres fan but that's a pretty poor excuse for an article.

Back to the topic on paper the Yankees are good but with Pineda down and Jeter and A-Rod not getting any younger I have a hard time believing they are the number 1 team in baseball.

/Think the Rockies will be better than people are giving them credit for but 18th sounds right for right now

2012-04-02 10:54:41 PM
While the Yankees are unquestionably good it is debatable that they are number one before the season starts. ESPN really does love the Yankees and Sox to the detriment of every other team. Yes the Phillies have a lot of questions but I still would have to rate them higher than eighth. Probably fifth.

Hey ESPN the NATIONAL LEAGUE has won SIX out of the last 10 World Series. The NL is NOT inferior to the AL where it counts; The post season!

Kind of hard to stay focused when the division is wrapped up by the all star break. But I think they should be good for at least 90 wins. One of the ESPN guys has picked them to win the WS, dont recall who though.

You do realize Fats Fielder and Pujols have moved to the AL? The NL is a free for all with every team outside of the Mets having a shot at the playoffs. The AL has stacked teams in NY, Boston, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Anaheim. Even the lower teams like the Blue Jays are better than most NL teams.

No Cleavland KC and Detriot will hover at .500 till August before the Tigers take control

2012-04-03 03:36:50 AM
What's the reason not to expect them to do well? Talented line up, great closer, strong pitching, in a weak division. Rays are the only team to look at other then the Yanks. Red Sox will suck under Bobby Valentine, the Jays and O's will be also rans.

The way the AL central is looking this year, they wont need more than 80 wins to win the division. Second place in the division goes to KC. The only reason the White Sox, Twins, and Indians will have reasonable records is because they'll play eachother so much.

2012-04-03 04:31:43 AM
Quite frankly, these seem not terrible. I'm also in the camp that thinks the Royals have an ok shot at 2nd place in the central, but that starting lineup is atrocious. Bruce Chen is their opening day starter. Marinate on that a little.

Personally, and I say this a a person who roots for New York, I think the Yankees might underperform a bit, especially on the mound. I just think this is going to be a weird year.

2012-04-03 05:54:04 AM
I predict that the Giants will be the best team in the N.L. this year. Will Melky Cabrera and a healthy Posey, and good young talent like Belt and Burris, they should have enough hitting to support the best pitching staff in MLB.

The Cy Young winner will be a Giant, but it's not going to be Lincecum or Cain.

The horrible defense of the tigers is what limits them to 84-85 wins. KC will get second in division because of a powerful offense really good defense and a nice bullpen. To bad the starting pitching sucks.

Between their uniforms and the stadium, their opponents will be too busy lauging their asses off to concentrate on playing. I expect them to be undefeated at home.
