Someone just let the motherf*cker have all the prescription painkillers he can afford. If he can afford bail, he could afford the painkillers.

Tell Me How My Blog Tastes: I thought this was the same article when I saw it on ESPN... it was like 48 hours. Not even. Holy crap, he's addicted. I wonder what the medications are.

I'd read a story about him a little while back, was almost kind of sad. Like an almost-redemption story with a disastrous ending.
After his debacle of an NFL career, and being humbled, he'd landed as an assistant coach for a small college fb team, and seemed to be at peace with it... except for the fact that he'd apparently become heavily addicted to pain killers, and got canned for asking players for extra pills.
Went to live with his folks in Montana after being further humbled, and was trying to get his life back on track.

I forget what his habit was, but whatever it was, it was a LOT. A very, very large number of pills per day. There was a Seattle PI story about him a couple years back but it doesn't appear to be online.

So, burglary shortly after being arrested, not surprising. Pill heads and bad news go together.

Eh, I don't think the after-career stuff really matters much in terms of how much of a 'bust' someone is. It's just dark comedy/salt in the wounds.
I'd look up their respective career numbers but I guess I don't care enough. They're probably both pretty bad. I think Leaf was #2 overall though and Russell was #1.

Yeah but #1 the year Leaf got drafted was Peyton Manning... and some people said Leaf was a better prospect than Manning. I doubt anyone ever said that about Russell.

I dont think that you understand the meaning of these words.

Now don't get me wrong, I've gotten plenty of stuff right, but when I'm wrong...
> Leaf better than Manning
> Tim Duncan overrated out of college
> Tiger Woods over hyped as amateur
> Kevin Love will probably be a journeyman and at best a decent starter in NBA. OJ Mayo will be the superior NBA player

Those are my worst.

Ryan Leaf
42 starts
48.4% completions
3666 passing yards
14-36 TD-INT ratio
50 QB Rating

JaMarcus Russell
25 starts
52.1% completions
4083 passing yards
18-23 TD-INT ratio
65.2 QB Rating

Leaf had more starts and had LESS yards than Russell. Also, Russell's TD-INT ratio was much closer to .500 than Leaf. Thus, Russell did not out-bust Leaf.

Nice work. You have to give it to Leaf. Also, it's a lot less surprising when the Raiders pick the wrong player.

Here's a snippet from the currently updated article in our own hometown paper, the Great Falls Tribune:

...authorities believe Leaf was the person found inside a home near Cove Lane on Sunday afternoon. According to reports from the task force, the man explained to the homeowners that he had gotten the wrong address and left.

Hickman said that the homeowners didn't know Leaf and were not aware of the news of his previous arrest on Friday.

The homeowners called law enforcement after noticing that they were missing prescription medication. Leaf allegedly matched a description given by the homeowners, who also were able to identify Leaf from a photo lineup, reports state.

Hickman said that investigators secured a search warrant for Leaf's GPS device in his pickup. Detectives found that Leaf was in the area near the home that was burglarized at about the same time the home's owners saw the man in their home...

Here's the full article.

That's right...a former #2 draft pick and starting NFL quarterback has been reduced to burglarizing random homes in search of drugs. Sad.

I am comfortable saying these gentlemen are equal busts. But if you have to have a tiebreaker I'll go with Leaf owing to the multiple arrests. That and it's still not completely impossible Russell could still play football at some point.

/whoa now, all I said was not completely impossible

You can't really fault the Chargers on taking Leaf, it's not like they took him instead of Manning. At the time Leaf was the right call at #2.

With Russell, the Raiders needed a QB bad and got stuck with a horrible QB class when they had the #1.

When he was first drafted one of the NFL commentators was talking about him before a game. This commentator basically said that in all of his years of working NFL games he has never met a rookie who was as rude, condescending, and completely full of himself as Leaf. The other commentator agreed.

The interesting part is that the only opinion of the above that seemed to be shared by a large percentage of people had to do with Kevin Love. Considering his skillset, and in spite of his status as a very high draft pick, a LOT of people were saying he was going to be a bust, journeyman at best. I never understood why so many people felt that way, because it seemed pretty obvious that the NBA is far from the 1980s smack-you-in-the-face-and-run NBA... he's a big guy and was a decent athlete, and he can take a punishment within the rules that exist today. Hell, he's not even had the opportunity to display one of his best skills (downcourt passing) all too often, and I can't imagine what people would think of him if he played for a better fast-break team, throwing a Hail Mary at least once per game. Seriously, the guy can throw a basketball better than Tim Tebow can throw a football.

Yeah, I've never spoken to anyone who knew him personally, but every single story I've ever read about those who did have said he was an unbelievably arrogant jerk who thought he was God's gift to the NFL at the time he was drafted.

People always say "trade down". It's not that easy. Who was wanting to trade up in that draft? This was in the days of #1 pick = Millions guaranteed, and there wasn't a sure thing that year.

There's also something to be said for the "starving man" part. As a Browns fan, I am absolutely terrified that we'll take Tannehil and #4 this year.

I was worried before, but after H&H skipped his Pro Day to go watch Trent Richardson, I think it's pretty safe to say that Tannehill is probably out of the picture at #4.

I know, but with misdirection being so rampant, the Browns history of boneheaded moves and the Fans clamoring for a quick fix I worry. If they do draft Tannehil expect to see a fat white guy in a Jim Brown throwback rush the Browns table and beat the crap out of whatever poor intern has the misfortune to be sitting there. Then collect bail money for me.
