DeaH: alowishus: DeaH: Is it fair to call someone a pedophile if he never molested a child?

Pedophilia is simply the attraction to children, it isn't necessary to molest a child to be considered a pedophile.

That said, I'm not sure if there is any proof that Barrie was a pedo.

Ah, I thought a pedophile is a child molester.

A pedophile is still a pedophile even if they've never touched a child. Just like a heterosexual is still a heterosexual even if they've never had sex.

I always thought it was interesting that in various film, stage and other adaptations of "Peter Pan", Peter is always a pre-teen or adolescent boy; whereas in the book, he is a VERY little boy--Barrie specifically describes him as having "all his first teeth", which means he can't be more than four or five. He NEEDS a mother, because no matter how independent a five year old acts during the day, he needs his mommy at night when things get scary.

"Peter Pan" is less about not wanting to grow up, I'd think, than about wanting always to be cared for by a nurturing female. It's noteworthy that Peter doesn't want a father, although that might just be a sign of the times (fathers weren't expected to be around at the turn of the century).

I find the idea of saying someone from the past (albeit the recent past with Barrie), is...
(insert modern term for something here) to be a stupid idea.

As someone with ADHD I see it all the time, people retroactively saying Mozart or Picasso had ADHD or Alexander the great was autistic and Richard the third had a foot fetish and Queen Elizabeth the 1st used to dress as a pirate and crap on a glass coffee table while her advisors lay underneath and watched.
Really, it is done on such flimsy evidence but it then becomes accepted wisdom. It is so often just modern people failing to come to terms with different social mores and trying to identify themselves with famous people from the past. Sometimes, it is to justify modern behaviours other times it is to encourage some poor kid with a modern malaise. Tell them, it is OK Einstein had social anxiety disorder just like you do and he did great things.

But it distorts history because our education systems fail to allow kids to deal with levels of complexity. It is all about facts. And theories become facts too quickly without subtlety, so instead we have a history which is just like the present but with silly pants.

DeaH: Ed Grubermann: DeaH: Is it fair to call someone a pedophile if he never molested a child?

Is it okay to call you a heterosexual even if you've never raped a woman?

If I raped a woman, I would not be heterosexual. I am a woman. Pedophilia isn't a sexuality. Pedophiles do not seem to be attracted to all children. They seem to pick a gender. Pedophiles are child molesters. I think the molesting is pretty key to the definition.

Ah, no. Child molesters are child molesters. Not all pedophiles molest children, and , this may come as a surprise, not everyone who molests a child is a pedophile. If you cared about definitions you'd know this.

Barrie specifically describes him as having "all his first teeth", which means he can't be more than four or five.

Due to the Disney influence I always pictured him as having all his baby teeth while being 12 or 13 = creepy.

I first read the book as an adult while reading it to my kids. I was amazed at how violent it was.

When this character died in the movie, I got so pissed. It was a children's movie and they saw fit to kill a child. And I didn't like seeing that last sword fight between Peter and Hook. I didn't want to see a sword fight at all. I wanted to see a modern man letting his rage monster out to maim and humiliate Hook.

I've always been back and forth on it. What I like is that it was probably the last big fantasy epic before the advent of CGI. All those mammoth sets are real, so they actors are in that actual environment, not standing in from of a green screen. Robin Williams brings some poignancy to the role. You can tell that Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins are having a ball. But Julia Roberts just flat out sucks as Tinkerbell. Actually, Julia Roberts is perhaps the only time I've ever heard Steven Spielberg bad mouth an actor after working with them.

considering Tink's role in "Hook", what is your issue with her?

/Like Hook. Never had a problem with the cast, other than the little girl that plays Peter's daughter can not act.
