You know, for a reboot, that doesn't look half bad. I'm really glad it's not a straight up remake, but rather what appears to be a different story but with the similar premise.

It looked pretty similar to me. It obviously assumes you saw the original since it is another of these "spell out 70% of the plot points" modern trailers.

Bigger CGI; smaller leading man.

Looks like the film's artistic vibe took a lot of inspiration from Mass Effect.... Looks good.

still waitin for the Mass Effect movie...sigh

Beckinsale would make a pretty good Miranda though

Miranda (new window) already has a perfectly good actress to play her.

Wait? Really?

Why not use the woman who voices Miranda and who the CG character is modeled after, Yvonne Strahovski?

IRL vs. CG.

Meh, scissor scenes just aren't that hot. Now throw in an "Ass to Ass" scene a la "Requiem for a Dream" without the drugs and degradation on the other hand...

Awful lot of people in this thread that completely fail to understand that the point of ambiguity in the story is the protagonist. Is he a real secret agent whose memories were just accidentally unlocked, or was he implanted with the memories of being a secret agent? Because he can take down a room full of riot cops either way.

I'm guessing you are all the same ones that were confused by the Matrix.

Or, that the events that are occurring are just in his mind and he's still strapped in the chair at the recall center, getting trapped deeper into a psychotic event.

T-Servo: bulok: LCD wasn't available for PCs until the early/mid-90s. Total Recall was out in 1990, so was probably filmed around '89.

Color LCDs were first available on laptops in 1988 (Compaq SLT/286), b&w existed since at least 1982 (GRiD Compass). I remember using a b&w LCD laptop for downloading weather info for flight planning in 1989.

threeoclockrock: you guys missed the point of the first movie. Arnold was either dreaming in a recall induced lobotomy, or he was really a secret agent. If he was a construction worker doesn't matter.

According to Verhoeven Arnold is in the chair the entire time of the movie at Rekall and the "fade to white" at the very end is Quaid being lobotomized.

Having never read the book, that movie was all sorts of awesome for me.

Looked better than expected; though truth be told, Kate Beckinsale is probably the biggest indicator that it may be crap. she stars in some awful movies.

i do think it's odd that people are saying Verhoeven ruined the original story. The original story covers maybe the first 20 minutes of the movie, the rest is all something else entirely.

PsyLord: Having never read the book, that movie was all sorts of awesome for me.

To be fair, I was never one of those who defended the book, and I loved Dizzy. But Denise Richards ruined it for me- I remember the MST3000 crew doing a brief send-up of "we get to drive spaceships at summer camp!".

I will admit that her Dr. Christmas Jones ("I'm a nucular physisist!") role was even less believable. But whoever cast her was stupid or drunk or sleeping with her.

2012-04-02 08:28:42 PM
The Rock would have been the obvious choice for casting here. Especially if he was doing a bad Arnold accent. OMG that would be awesome. And if he was constantly 4th walling. Maybe covering up the 3 tit girl with his head, all 'Hey guys what's goin' on'. Maybe cast Tracy Morgan as Benny. Throw Danny Devito in as Quato. And of course Arnold would be in there somewhere, maybe as the Johnny Cab or something.

/Quato is gold

I'd like to show Kate Beckinsale the Kuato in my pants.

2012-04-02 08:52:10 PM
reasons this might suck...(or ruin childhood memories)

Kurt Wimmer is a writer
Neal Moritz is the producer
Len Wiseman is the director
kuato might just be a normal dude
Two weeks gag won't be there
No good catch lines
Lack of "Giff deez people aihyr". "get your ass to mars" and I bet there will be no nose cavity snake again.

Reasons why this may Rock

Bill Nighy is Kuato
Brian Cranston is Cohagen

Tex Colorado the Arizona Assassin: Why?

I need someone to explain this to me. First off, I should probably explain that I'm an old fart in Hollywood's eyes. I have the original Total Recall on VHS. This movie is also available on DVD and BluRay, Amazon VOD, iTunes and it's probably on a million torrent sites. It doesn't appear to be an attempt to attract the teeny-bopper audience as these aren't teeny-bopper actors. I should be the target for this movie. I'm a huge Phillip K. Dick fan and I'm the same age as Kate Beckinsale, but I have no desire to go see this. So who is the target audience?

This movie isn't really for Americans, at least not exclusively. No action movie is any more. They are for the rest of the world. Movies with hot chicks and big explosions and flying cars and the like are easily translatable and exportable throughout the planet, including places that didn't regularily see many Hollywood movies when the original Total Recall came out in 1990 and therefore never saw the original.

With $1 Redbox rentals, we end up seeing just about every piece of shiat that comes down the pike. I look forward to this turd comin' round the bend. Looks cool. Gotta rent it in BluRay. Oh shiat, that'll cost me an extra FIFTY CENTS added to my DOLLAR rental!

These people owe me nothing. I can't complain if they don't entertain me sufficiently. Someone's lucky they even got a buck fifty out of me. I have internet and the same choice as everyone to download/burn a new movie, or out of convenience just cough up some scratch for a shiny new BluRay at the corner store Redbox kiosk.

I forgot what my point was so, um...carry on.

This, and this is why I don't go to see mainstream movies at all anymore. It's either idiotic slapstick plots that rely on toilet humor and one-dimensional characters with all the depth of a kiddie pool, or nothing but annoyingly loud and improbable CGI action with plastic and uninteresting characters.
