I mean playoffs.

Serious question, was that not a good hit? I don't watch much hockey.

It looked awesome to me.

It was a clean hit. The circumstances surrounding it were a bit more complex.

Good hit, more important it was a CLEAN hit. No contact to the head (which is the 1st thing they'll look for in a hit like that these days).

Now, who here is looking forward to these two facing off in the 1st round of the playoffs?

Me. I posted in the other thread...
soopey: For the love of fark, NHL TV ratings, and every other team in the East, bring on a 7 game series between the Penguins and Flyers. As a neutral observer, that will be an absolute war. It'll definitely be the best matchup in the first round.

i'm looking forward to it big time. and that hit was great. removed the player from the puck, no head contact, perfect.

I can't farking wait. I just hope that the Flyers still have enough uninjured players left to continue on into the second round.

Also, I've never seen Peter Laviolette that angry. I think one of the Pens players said something to him he shouldn't have. Players talking trash to coaches is a big no-no. He looked like his head was going to explode.

This, and also, they made the mistake of scoring first against the Flyers. If you want to beat them, you generally have to let them get the first goal, so they stop trying to win. Jumping out to a two- or three-goal lead only makes them angry.

LET'S GO FLYERS!!!

As opposed to all the crap Crosby did over the course of the game? That wasn't much of a crosscheck at all and certainly less force than Sid used to break his stick when he slashed someone earlier in the game. The Pens are top three in the league in cheap shots and they got away with a ton of them today.

I hope they bring back the "Pittsburgh Ice Diving Team" tee shirts. I didn't pick one up when they sold them briefly a few years ago and I've been kicking myself since I can't find them online anymore.

Crosby's reaction on that hit is why so many people dislike him. He immediately looks to the ref. Not at Schenn. The ref. For the record, the cross-check was a punk move. But Crosby's reaction left a bad taste in my mouth.

That's my thinking too. I'm anything but a Crosby fan, but I'm not going to rip him for embellishment there. It was a cross-check well after play was over. That should've been a minor.

But yes, looking at the ref instead of who checked him is the very reason why he gets called "Cindy" so often. At least he has guys on his team willing to take the number for him.

eh, it was called, but it was cancelled by the goal, even though the goal happened before the penalty. It's a stupid rule, but even if (as in this case) video review determines a goal was scored, the first minor that happened during the course of play is terminated. If it had happened after the whistle, Schenn would have sat for 2 minutes.

It does though! Nice big hit, and all the rest of them look at each other and you can see them thinking 'well, people like fights, so...' and as one all go at each other like it was planned, and then barely do anything. It all looks scripted, like they were just waiting for the good trigger moment.

The coaches yelling at each other made it look more fake, not less.

So did Gretzky, but no one ever called him "Winny" or some such nonsense. And to be fair to Crosby, he's played what? 10 or 15 games in the past year because of a concussion? So he looked to the ref to get a call for a blatant illegal hit that could've sent him to the long-term IR again when Schenn clearly targeted his numbers. I'll give him a pass this time. At least Crosby has moved up from punching guys in the nuts from behind. So...that's an improvement, right?

No it wasn't a penalty because it didn't happen.

The goal was scored, but play continued on until the icing and the subsequent cross check occurred. The video replay then determined it was a goal so everything that happened after the goal didn't happen as far as the game was concerned.

Gretzky was a lot harder to hit. Barry Melrose once talked about trying to hit him and every time he was about to hit him Gretzky moved out of the way. Even when it looked like he was stuck against the board, Melrose got nothing but his shoulder against the glass.

You're missing the context though. The "nice big hit" was with 1 minute left in a 6-3 game after the line Pittsburgh put on was the big guys, to try to get even for that check Crosby took in the back. That's why the coach was so pissed, he was challenging the other coach to a fight. Probably one of these "you wanna use your players to fight, lets you and me go toe to toe right now."

It looks to me like some of the Flyers were going to skate over and let Vitale know how the felt about it, not necessarily fight and as an immediate reactoin seeing the Flyers skate quickly towards their guy the Penguins defend him. No one cared about the puck because the game was already over, it was 6-3 with 1 minute left. What's the other team gonna do, score and make it 7-3 or 6-4?

Not true. If multiple minors had occurred or if it were a major, they would have been served (except for the first minor). It was called on the ice, and cancelled out because of the goal.

Give me a minute, and I'll find the actual rule.

2012-04-01 05:57:25 PM
Last paragraph of 78.6:

Any penalties signaled during the period of time between the apparent goal and the next stoppage of play shall be assessed in the normal manner, except when a minor penalty is to be assessed to the team scored upon, and is therefore nullified by the scoring of the goal. Refer to Rules 16.2 and 18.2.

I guess I just don't remember that, although I was pretty young at the time. I also grew up in Detroit and paid more attention to the Wings. I knew no one ever messed with Steve Yzerman because he had Bob Probert on his side -- and no one called Stevie Y a wimp for that. Although like I said, I grew up in Detroit. Steve Yzerman was a god there so no one ever said anything bad about him ever.

killershark: I guess I just don't remember that, although I was pretty young at the time.

Gretzky's legacy has buried most of that, as will Crosby's - assuming he continues at his pace. The domination is remembered, the criticisms silenced as time goes on. Obviously, Gretzky was amazing, but he had his downside and was ludicrously protected by the refs. Similarly, Crosby is an incredible talent, but his penchant for whining is a mark against him. One that will most likely be all but forgotten in the future.
